A quick note for those copying their /home folder over to test settings from 19.4 on the new beta1. On my system it broke Conky. May be something in the conky-startup.sh script. I overwrote the files from the /usr/share/mx-conky-data/themes folder into my /home/little_old_me/.conky folder, logged out and back in, and it started working again.

Try Milan or Utah
Thanks, I'll give those a try.

You may have had old syntax conky configs in your home folder. What conky config did you try to run?

Newer versions of the conky program will not run old syntax configs anymore. They'll only run those that use the Lua syntax. This started happening in rolling distros like the Arch-based ones maybe last year so we knew it was coming for the version of conky post-Debian buster.

MX 19's version of conky can still run old and new syntax conky configs.

I installed the 32-bit fluxbox beta on a Dell M2400 with Nvidia Quadro FX 370M. Installation went fine but I wasn't able to install the Nvidia driver using the built-in Nvidia driver installation tool. I tried installing manually with the driver file from Nvidia's driver web page, but the Nvidia driver seems to be unable to disable the Nouveau drivers.

@swac please supply the /var/log/ddm.log file.

be warned...32 bit nvidia is getting less and less. there is only one driver set left in debian 11 that supports 32 bit drivers, and you have to be able to use the nvidia 390 drivers for that.

I played with the Fluxbox iso and things are looking better in every way than I expected.

The big thing for Xfce would be that there are no libxfce4ui-nocsd packages. I have them on my MX-19 Xfce 4.16 snapshot and they work flawlessly. You can recreate the look and feel of Xfce 4.14 with these packages since unlike gtk3-nocsd this is a native nocsd solution for all apps relying on libxfce4ui. For other apps like LibreOffice there is:

Code: Select all

$ xfconf-query -c xsettings -p /Gtk/DialogsUseHeader -s false
So in the end only Simple Scan and File Roller need to use CSD. I use Engrampa so I guess I can live with Simple Scan.
EDIT: I checked Simple Scan. It uses Xfwm in Xfce 4.14 and in Xfce 4.16 with libxfce4ui-nocsd installed. dconf Editor would be a better example of a native CSD application.

So that would be a package request for the future I guess. It seems it is enough to package these packages once, since Xfce development has already started targeting Xfce 4.18 with the latest libxfce4ui release. I have seen people complaining about CSDs in this thread, but the "real" solution wasn't mentioned.

What conky config did you try to run?
MX-Cowon_blue_dinreg. It seems to be in both MX 21b1 and MX 19.4

If I copied the contents of these folders over from MX 19.4 to MX 21b1 what do you guys think would happen?
  • /root
  • /home
  • /etc
  • /opt
  • /usr/local
  • /var/backups
  • /var/games
  • /var/lib
  • /var/local
  • /var/log
  • /var/mail
  • /var/opt
  • /var/webmin
  • /var/spool/anacron
  • /var/spool/cron/crontabs
  • /var/spool/libreoffice
  • /var/www
Are there any config files that would cause the new version to think it's the old version?
Would it cause any problems with any packages?

Well almost..network printer didn't respond to a print request, tried deleting it and adding again and seems to be working okay now. Noticed Acrobat reader wasn't in the MX package installer any more, tried installing from a deb file, it said all dependencies were satisfied but doesn't start, no biggie right now, just liked the options for printing more in this than in any linux PDF readers.
