MXFB desktop file

I would appreciate some help with this desktop file. I used DeepL to provide some possible translations--please review. Any additional translations would be very welcome. Just to be clear: "Appfinder" is the name of the application search/start program in MX Fluxbox.

When making changes, please start by copying the most recent version in the thread--thanks!

Dunno what previous poster did, but content looks different. Pasting from @Jerry3904's post, Dutch adjusted.

For one, yeah.. with all the extra content.. we had to copy your text, those were the instructions. Not make up our own and add that to it. That's confusing.

Very true, and I hope we don't see it again. I'm willing to give him a great big benefit of the doubt, on the other hand, since he is the one who found and opened the tomb.

There is a chance that marcelocripe tries to lead by example.
Maybe code brackets pass punctuation marks more reliably than forum block quoting? marcelocripe. i took out the quotes to avoid forum mashing them. . await final to get it correct. thanks.

If I'm french and I type my keyword in English ? It doesn't work.

Re: MXFB desktop file

Dear @i_ri,

The same words should not be used twice in the same line (Keywords).
If a language is not translated, Debian will look for the words in English in the (Keywords) line.
If a language is translated, e.g. for Keywords[fr], Debian will look only for the words in French.
But if the user uses both languages, the words in English and French must be entered in the Keywords[fr] line. You should not repeat the same words because English is very close to French. This is normal, as 60% of English words come from Old French.

Kind regards,
Wallon

Hello fellow developers and translators.

Since the thread viewtopic.php?t=85517&start=10 has been closed, I can't continue the thread that started in that conversation.

The topic was how MX Linux's ".desktop" files are being poorly designed due to the space limitations of the "Application Finder" or "App Finder" program.

@siamhie, thank you very much for demonstrating the problem by sharing the "featherpad.png" image in the other thread.

The problem lies in the space limitations or the functionality of the "App Finder."

I say it's a problem because the "App Finder" doesn't have the scroll bars that "AppSelect" does. For those who don't know, the "AppSelect" launcher is from antiX and could be in MX Linux, since Dave performs constant updates and the program is translated on Transifex and in the same space where we translate MX Linux.

Please note in the images that the program descriptions are not limited and that you can scroll to the right to continue reading the text.

In images 1 to 5, the text is in English, and in images 6 to 11, it is in Brazilian Portuguese.

I can write in the "Comment[pt_BR]=" entry the original name of the program in English, the English acronym for the program name, and explain what the program does and what it's for, as well as whatever else is necessary so that Brazilians don't have to go to forums and ask what each program does and what it's for. Furthermore, when someone who doesn't speak English writes in this forum or any other forum, they need to know the original name of the program in English to be understood by the developers.

What is being done with the MX Linux ".desktop" files is a mistake; the "Comment=" entry allows you to explain in detail what the program does and what it's for.

Those who suffer the most from ".desktop" files with poorly written and incomprehensible text are MX Linux end users, most of whom don't frequent this forum, nor are they technical, advanced, or expert users.

MX Linux end users read and think, "What is GTK?" or "What is Qt?" or "What is this sentence for?" or "What is simple, GTK or Calendar?" or "Is GTK a brand?" or "Is Qt a brand?"

Brazilians who know I'm a volunteer translator complain to me when the text isn't understandable, when the acronyms in English or any other foreign language don't explain what they mean. No one is required to know what acronyms in foreign languages mean. Does anyone know what the acronyms INSS, NIS, PIS, PMSP, PMG, SE, SP, MG, BACEN, STF, PF, etc. mean in Brazilian Portuguese?

Brazilians complain when text is extremely concise due to the limited space in program windows, they complain about the lack of translations, etc.

Thank you very much @Wallon for explaining to native English speakers some of the reasons we strategically repeat information in program texts and ".desktop" files.

I ask the MX Linux developers to reevaluate the underutilization of ".desktop" file texts and to improve the quality of the information in ".desktop" files and program texts. Because there's no point in having an excellent operating system and not being able to understand how to use it because the texts are lazy or poorly written. There's no point in having an excellent program and no one being able to use it because of the lack of information.

Words have power. Well-placed words can serve to teach, clarify, promote, publicize, and praise MX Linux. Meanwhile, poorly placed words can serve to misinform, omit, denigrate, and disparage MX Linux. Therefore, use your words for the good of MX Linux, which will ultimately benefit end users. Words also have the power to start a war or create peace.

- - - - -

As palavras possuem poder.

Apparently, some people didn't like the fact that I added the "Keywords=" entry.

I'm not a native English speaker, so it's up to a native speaker to proofread and correct texts in your language.

".desktop" files are just as important as programs.

- - - - -

nl_NL is Dutch
Dutch - NETHERLANDS (NL) (nl_NL)

nl_BE is definitely not The Netherlands, that's for Belgium. It could be Dutch, but is likely even Flemish. I'd have to consult some Belgian friends on that if you'd want me to.

Oh.. Google to the rescue: https://www.localeplanet.com/icu/nl-BE/index.html

If @siamhie continues to undo what volunteer translators and native speakers write, then there's no point in @Wallon and I wasting our time translating MX Linux. Let's let @siamhie use the automatic translator and MX Linux have poorly written texts from the automatic translator.

How I did it:

Name[pt_BR]=Configurações do Appfinder
GenericName[pt_BR]=Configurador do pesquisador e inicializador de programas
Comment[pt_BR]=O ‘Appfinder Settings’ permite configurar o pesquisador e inicializador de programas Appfinder
Keywords[pt_BR]=appfinder;configurações;definições;configurador;pesquisador;buscador;localizador;aplicativos;aplicação;programas;iniciador;lançador;executar;opções;mxfb;

As @siamhie did:

Name[pt_BR]=Configurações do appfinder
Comment[pt_BR]=Opções de configuração

The @siamhie removed the "GenericName[pt_BR]" and "Keywords[pt_BR]" entries, as well as modifying the text in the "Name[pt_BR]" and "Comment[pt_BR]" entries.

If @siamhie is the boss of MX Linux and can do whatever he wants, then I'll leave it to him to translate all of MX Linux and the ".desktop" files into Brazilian Portuguese.

I won't waste any more time checking to see if @siamhie or anyone else who can't read, write, or speak Brazilian Portuguese changed the translations I made.

I translate antiX and MX with the best interests of Brazilian users in mind. But if this isn't valuable and can be changed by people unfamiliar with Brazilian Portuguese, then I don't know if it's worth continuing to volunteer my time and work for MX.

@Wallon, I recommend you check the changes made to your translations.

I apologize if I bothered anyone.

- - - - -

Name[pt_BR]=Configurações do Appfinder
GenericName[pt_BR]=Configurador do pesquisador e inicializador de programas
Comment[pt_BR]=O ‘Appfinder Settings’ permite configurar o pesquisador e inicializador de programas Appfinder
Keywords[pt_BR]=appfinder;configurações;definições;configurador;pesquisador;buscador;localizador;aplicativos;aplicação;programas;iniciador;lançador;executar;opções;mxfb;

Name[pt_BR]=Configurações do appfinder
Comment[pt_BR]=Opções de configuração

@marcelocripe, in order to tag someone, type the @ key, start typing the username, and then click on the popup. That will change the color of the name and turn it into a mention.

Users will not get notified that you mentioned them if you don't use it that way.

I only copied the list that was posted in comment #1. I didn't add or change anything. I didn't double check my work put out by Eadwine and Utopia and that's my fault.

I used Google to translate these two phrases. Name=Appfinder Settings and Comment=Configuration options. Nothing else.

I got that information from here. https://simplelocalize.io/data/locale-code/nl-BE/

This is what I used to figure out the various country codes. https://simplelocalize.io/data/locales/

First link, in the top: "The locale code represents Dutch language in Belgium country." It even has a Belgian flag, that is not the Dutch flag.

Proper Dutch: https://simplelocalize.io/data/locale-code/nl-NL/

If you want to use Dutch, please use that one, not Belgian Dutch. They are not the same.

Fun one: dress.

We call that jurk.
Belgian will go to kleedje.
Kleedje means rug in Dutch. I am not going to wear a rug.

Other things is sentence building. Belgians use u for you. We will use u and je/jij depending on situations.

It is just weird to use Belgian for Dutch.

Some may even find it offensive/insulting.

I grabbed that list of locales from the about-mx-linux.desktop file so that I could search for the language of the locale codes.
(I've updated my template to show only [nl], which is what is shown in this threads desktop file.

From that web site, showed this regarding nl. (I don't know why there are so many different flags for the same language--not my web site, not my problem :happy: )

Languages are interesting when compared to around the world.
For instance, in the UK, you can call someone a c*nt and they would be fine with it, whereas if applied to the US, it's offensive.

@fehlix, out of respect for you personally and the conversations we've had here on the MX Linux forum, I've returned to respond.

You're absolutely right, because we work voluntarily to benefit MX Linux, which in turn benefits hundreds of thousands of people around the world.

I'll speak to siamhie to stay out of adjusting native speaker translations. He might wanted to help, which seems didn't go well.
What happened in this topic had happened before in the topic viewtopic.php?t=85517&start=10 that @Jerry3904 blocked.

That's why I brought to this topic what I explained here posting.php?mode=quote&p=828533.

This is how I strategically use each of the entries in the ".desktop" file, namely "Name[pt_BR]=", "GenericName[pt_BR]=", "Comment[pt_BR]=", and "Keywords[pt_BR]=" to provide as much information as possible about the respective program to the potential 230+ million Brazilians living here in Brazil and other countries who may eventually use MX Linux on their Brazilian Portuguese-language computers.

The "Name[pt_BR]=" entry must contain some information in Brazilian Portuguese (what the respective program is and what it's for), in addition to the original name of the program, which may or may not be mentioned, depending on the situation.

The "GenericName[pt_BR]=" entry must contain some words that are synonyms for the words used in the "Name[pt_BR]=" entry. When the original program name was not included in the "Name[pt_BR]=" entry, it will certainly be included in the "GenericName[pt_BR]=" entry and/or in the "Comment[pt_BR]=" entry.

The "Comment[pt_BR]=" entry must contain the original program name, the acronyms that represent the program name (when the acronym exists), an explanation of the meaning of the acronyms in Brazilian Portuguese, as well as other words that are synonyms for the words used in the "Name[pt_BR]=" and "GenericName[pt_BR]=" entries. And finally, an explanation of what the respective program is and what it is used for.

The "Keywords[pt_BR]=" entry must contain as many words as possible that a Brazilian could type into a launcher to easily find the program with any of the thousands of words we have in Brazilian Portuguese.

But, since the MX Linux forum administrators weren't interested in what I pointed out viewtopic.php?t=85517, viewtopic.php?t=85517&start=10 and posting.php?mode=quote&p=828533. On the contrary, @Jerry3904 preferred to lock the topic rather than understand the importance of ".desktop" files in communicating with end users. The topic was about how MX Linux ".desktop" files are being poorly designed due to the space limitations of the "Application Finder" or "App Finder" program.

If I can't do my best in producing the texts I create from what I read in automatic translations from Google, DeepL, Leo, etc. for use in MX Linux, then I think I've been dedicating my time to the wrong community since August 2020. That's right, I've been a volunteer translator for over five years for antiX and MX.

However, on the antiX forum, I'm at least respected by anticapitalista, Dave, Robin, PPC, Xecure, and so many other people who understand why I need to produce texts that a 5-year-old or an elderly person over 60 can read and understand what the program does and what it's for without having to search the internet.

I couldn't do my best with the ".desktop" files for "Calendar," as you can see in this thread viewtopic.php?t=85517.

If you're going to produce poorly written and incomprehensible translations for the Brazilian people, due to space limitations or the limitations of a specific program, then don't count on me to write poorly written texts for MX Linux.

There are many people dedicating their time and effort to making the best operating system possible, and I cannot be forced to produce poorly written and incomprehensible translations for Brazilians.

My email address (marcelocripe at gmail dot com) is public, and it's available on my website marcelocripe.eu5.org, in the various translation files I've created over the past five years. Anyone who wants to talk to me can do so at any time.

As I wrote before:

"Words have power. Well-placed words can serve to teach, clarify, promote, disseminate, and uplift. Meanwhile, poorly placed words can serve to misinform, omit, denigrate, and depreciate. Therefore, use your words for the good of MX Linux, which will be for the good of its users. Words also have the power to start a war or create peace."

As you already know, the English text I'm sending is a machine translation. If it is mistranslated or misunderstood, my original text in Brazilian Portuguese will serve to resolve any misunderstanding that may occur in the automatic translation.
@marcelocripe, in order to tag someone, type the @ key, start typing the username, and then click on the popup. That will change the color of the name and turn it into a mention.
@Eadwine Rose, thank you for your explanation on how to cite a person's name here on the MX forum. It's not done this way on the antiX forum. It's difficult for me to use this feature because names need to be typed instead of copying and pasting, which is much easier.

- - - - -
So, suggest, calm down and yes, please help MX and antiX to provide translations for Brazilian Portugues.
Thanks

I'll speak to siamhie to stay out of adjusting native speaker translations. He might wanted to help, which seems didn't go well.

"As palavras possuem poder.

@marcelocripe, in order to tag someone, type the @ key, start typing the username, and then click on the popup. That will change the color of the name and turn it into a mention.

As I told Eadwine, I don't run that web site, so that's up to them to do what they want. As far as the "C" word goes, I hate it.
When I watch British programming, it's not so bad probably because of the way it's used. Not in a derogatory way.

@marcelocripe
I'll explain once more what is asked to do for the desktop file that is for MX fluxbox.
Take these two sections and translate into the various other languages.

Code: Select all

Name=Appfinder Settings

Comment=Configuration options
Don't add or remove entries.
Don't change the entries name or comment.

............

Code: Select all

Name=Appfinder Settings

Comment=Configuration options

@marcelocripe You're welcome.
If it is mistranslated or misunderstood, my original text in Brazilian Portuguese will serve to resolve any misunderstanding that may occur in the automatic translation.
Thing is.. nobody here knows Brazilian Portuguese, so.. nobody can use it.

@siamhie You don't run the site.. I get it.

Just know now: nl_NL is what should be used. Not nl_BE.

I copied the about-mx-linux.desktop to my Downloads folder and edited it so that I knew which language to look up in Google Translate.
This is what that desktop file has. (I have since removed nl_BE from my translation template and show just nl instead).

So this I see

Name[nl_BE]=Over MX Linux

has become

Name[nl]=Over MX Linux

For instance. It will change on the others as well I wager?

That works :)

I didn't edit the file /usr/share/applications/about-mx-linux.desktop. I merely copied it to Downloads and edited it to look like this. That way I know which language to use in Google.

Code: Select all

For instance, in the UK, you can call someone a c*nt and they would be fine with it, whereas if applied to the US, it's offensive.
This is so wrong. That word is always offensive in the UK.
(Just because people use it 'for a laugh' doesn't make it ok).

I'm not saying it's OK, just saying that the reactions differ quite a bit.

Does a discussion of offensive words really belong in this topic. I would suggest that they do not.

It doesn't, but the comment was made and I feel needs to be challenged.
(No, I'm not suggesting deleting any posts and any reply such as 'take it up in a pm' is insufficient as the false post will still be there)

@siamhie - we clearly disagree on this, so to avoid derailing the thread (further), send me a pm if you want to discuss this.

My point was to get back to the original request as detailed in the first post in this topic..And not pointing to any individual.
