How to Update MX-18 to MX-21 [Solved]
Re: How to Update MX-18 to MX-21
@Gigahenry007
You have to create a user password. You can select "Autologin" afterwards, but the system requires you to have a user password first, in order to complete the installation.

HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;
In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

... Yes, you can shut down any time you like but you need to begin installation from step1 next time (but, nothing to worry, as you already know those steps you can quickly go on next next)
The 20 min. etc. is for older machines and usb 2.0 of course, on my single core 32 bit laptop it's about 15 min.
As already mentioned (and already recommended by me previously) enter a user pw. then if you like check the "autologin"..

Re: How to Update MX-18 to MX-21
Thank You for your help.
It is an official MX-21.3 ISO. I'm not sure if it's USB 3.1 flash drive, using a USB 3.0 motherboard port?
It's not indicated in the attachment but I did in fact. Set an Encrytion PW, Default user name and PW as well a Root PW. I was also asked to choose a Default keyring which I also set. It was set to Auto login as well.
All these steps seems to go well and it moves swiftly to 12% and indicates Installation in progress.
It hasn't changed in 5 hours. After resetting all the above at 3:16 am just for kicks I noted the hdd at 59%, mem 64% and cpu 1%. The cpu at a glance didn't get much higher than 4-5%.
Apparently I've done something incorrectly along the way? I have no idea what!?!?
In starting over again...does that mean formatting the USB? Download another MX 21.3 iso? If it does than please include an exact link for the download. Although I think the one on the flashdrive is geniune.

No, no, just you can boot once more with your live usb (any time you like) and click "install MX" ...Gigahenry007 wrote: Sat Feb 18, 2023 10:11 am... In starting over again...does that mean formatting the USB Download another MX 21.3 iso...
(The usb 3.1, 3.0, 2.0 etc are just to tell it may be faster/slower with them etc.. You don't need to do any extra things..)
Re: How to Update MX-18 to MX-21
In case it gets stuck again, you can post the /var/log/minstall.log

Re: How to Update MX-18 to MX-21
Where do I find this? /var/log/minstall.log. I should post it now as noted in the previous post due to the steps done early this morning.
Please advise.
Do i need to enter all new Passwords in all the places indicated and what about the Encryption one which wasn't mentioned in the original instructions. I took it upon myself to do that one in an act of desperation as it wasn't done the first time.

Please advise.

Re: How to Update MX-18 to MX-21
You need to open/send it just after the problem .. that's the path for it (in file manager) . Also you can find it in "Quick System Info" (from menu) (click the dropdown menu when you open QSI).
You know, if you encrypt the root (main) partition, then there must be a separate non-encrypted partition for /boot
Or, you can just encrypt the home partition (like I do) and go on..
(I guess the problem might be at that stage, it may be waiting for you about such things)

All anew ...
But again, since you now know how to, you can pass the first steps quickly, timezone, language, grub, pc name .. next next ...
then just username and pw. , root pw. , (and encryption password(s) if you want to encrypt..) that's all
In the meantime, setting a username all lowercase may be better (long story): i.e. raffaello rather than Raffaello for future, ease of use...

OK! but do I need brand new passwords?
I'm at the "Terms Of Use" page
Do I need to do encryption and or password? will it mess things up for any reason if I don't?
Thank You!
