What old beast are you proudly running MX Linux on ?

Old-ish retired engineer here. Was sitting in a meeting where I brought my old battle-scarred, heavy, and very solid 10 year old Dell Latitude E6430, while surrounded by others with mostly sleek macbooks and one Dell XPS. They looked at my laptop with a "does that thing still work?" look, while MX Linux fired up very quickly and very snappy with its SSD drive and 16G ram, and its built like a tank. It was a fun experience, kind of like driving up to a group of Tesla's with a '57 Chevy. Granted, my battery doesn't last as long and the display is nowhere near a retina display. Still, with XFCE themed out just like I like it, and as snappy as it is, its awesome.

Anyone else have have an old beast that they are still grateful to own and proud to run?

I was using MX 18.3 on an olde HP dv6-2130tx laptop until my dog knocked it onto a tile floor and the fan broke. I've been meaning to get it repaired then increasing its DDR3 1066 RAM to 8GB (its maximum) and installing a SATA SSD but I never seem to get around to it, now that the nearest repair shop is open again. I really need to do that as I think I'll have a need and use for it in the next few months. I love the fact that it has a nearly full-size keyboard and a 15.6 inch screen though at 1366x768 resolution.

Granted it's only used as a backup (it's really heavy and battery life is poor), but I still have a roughly 2010 ASUS X42D laptop working just fine on MX19.
It was just put to the test last December when my sis and family visited. My nephew had to spend a week in hospital and I lent him the old clunker so he could surf the web and watch youtube. Very basic tasks, nothing too taxing on the cpu or graphics card, but at least I know it can still do its job.

I have several E6430 machines, and they are great. So easy to repair or upgrade. I have two family members that run their small businesses using E6430s with MX Linux on.
I also have some Thinkpad T430 machines of a similar era that I use all the time for testing. I have a couple of XPS 13s, and although 'pretty', they don't really work that much faster than the older ones.

I have a couple of eeePC901s running MX19.
They run rather slowly with the old Atom processor but my wife and I like them for their smallness, lightness and good battery life.
Older laptops with only 512k RAM cannot run MX, but are usable with AntiX.

I'm running MX21 KDE on Asus EEE 1000HG (2010 probably; 2gb, Atom, SSD). It's more or less just a backup of a backup machine, but it's fun and has one of the best keyboards I have ever tried. Screen resolution is a bit too small (1024x600, no touch) so I had to install Plasma instead of XFCE.
Hardware doesn't allow anything fancy, but it runs (almost) smoothly - if you don't open too many tabs :)
Oh, and kids have their T440s (which are from 2014 IIRC?) running MX21 KDE

I have an ancient Dell Dimension with 512 RAM and an old Celeron processor i386 that runs 32-bit antiX - with the xfce desktop added - nice 'n' fast.

I have MX21 Fluxbox 'flying' on my main Sony Vaio (2010) machine, as did Debian- and MX based Xfce editions previously .
This laptop came with - and still has - an i7 (2nd gen) Cpu and with 6gb ram. Sofar only changed the HDD for a dirtcheap Kingfast 240gb SSD. This machine now has roughly 16.000 operating hours on the counter; it is running a bit hotter than it should (idling at around 50°C) and battery condition only at max 80%. But still with a deadpixel-free display and overall great performance, I'm a happy camper...

the T530 in my signature is of 2012 vintage. The dvd has been removed and replaced with a second drive bay holding a 1tb spinning disk and the original spinning harddrive was replaced with a 500gb SSD. This is my main production machine, largely for the keyboard and extra drive bay. I would probably still be using my older T410 which had an even better keyboard, but the graphics in that machine do not support opengl3 which I need for some video recording tasks. Only 8gb of ram. I have built the MX isos on this machine, but I have another more powerful machine for that now, but that machine has a keyboard and port configuration that is so annoying I can't stand to use it for production despite it being superior in spec in every other way.

ThinkPad T43, which is probably over twenty years old. Web browsing is so slow that I won't use this laptop for anything other than reading forums. It sits on the coffee table next to the sofa and I'm using it now for this post.

2005 Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop here maxxed out at 2Gb of RAM, At the time I paid big money for the 1920x1200 display but I've never regretted it... One of the first core-Duos but sadly only 32bit.. Currently happily running MX-21 with Enlightenment D.E.

I have an old SFF (small form factor) machine I built over 11 years ago.
I was running MX 18.3 until recently. It had my usual configuration, AMD CPU (a Athlon 615e 45Watts, four cores @ 2.5 GHz), Asus board, SSD (60 Gig back in the day), and upgraded to 8G RAM. Probably the computing power of a lot of phones these days.
Was totally functional for browser based-banking and finance stuff to segregate for security (No e-mail or casual browsing).
I was going to upgrade it a few months ago, but working in the small case is such a hassle. So, I updated it to MX 21. Still works great, now serving as a back-up machine.
Pays to buy good hardware. It also as a 1TB WD green drive. These drives had a 1 year warranty, but still works. Admittedly the system has a lot of time suspended to RAM.

Thanks to Openbox' ability to hide titlebars, Ardour fits perfectly on the 1366x768 screen.

Panasonic CF-29 w/touchscreen from about 2006. Use daily for web search, browsing, document creation, video watching (doesn't like 1080p but 720p is good), navigation, whatever, etc, etc.
Kernel is patched to allow use of both PCMCIA ports.
Also have an ssd with MX21.1 that runs almost as quick as 19.4

Let me guess: "chicklet" keyboard with very short key travel and very little tactile feedback, and all the USB etc. ports on only one side? My Lenovo laptop's like that. I actually prefer the old HP Pavilion even if it has only a 2 core CPU and slower RAM.

Into my third year with MX on my Latitude E6410. (AD 2010!)
-Intel Core i5 M 540
-8 GB
-1TB SSD and a spinning disk in the DVD bay
-Dell docking station for extra ports
-Outputting to the laptop screen and 1920x1080 display set as primary
I'd like a better machine but I have a mortgage to pay off. Anyway this machine works very well and the chassis feels indestructible.

Respect the positivity...I'll have to give that a try on a laptop.
It was 2007 when I built this box and while not so powerful it is useful. Web pages load pretty fast and it streams 1080p full screen on my 32 inch monitor nicely. As a bonus, Plasma desktop runs smoothly. It's my go-to when there's work to be done.

This makes me think about how you can run the latest linux system on the oldest hardware just like you can do with Win...oh...nevermind.

I had been running a Lenovo/Thinkpad R61i Core2Duo 2GB RAM from 2010 until the battery died. Haven't been able to get a new battery yet. It ran MX-21 XFCE as my daily driver. I replaced it with a Lenovo Ideapad 330S, with a Core i3-8130U and 4GB RAM and four threads. which also runs MX-21 XFCE. But I don't consider that an "old beast" yet. It's from 2018 and also runs Win11. My second/backup is now an HP ProBook 4520s from 2011. A Core i3-380M with four threads and 6GB RAM. That runs MX-21 KDE very well. I take it on road trips. It's a little "bulky" when compared to the Lenovo but I like it. Except for the touchpad. It's too far to the left and a little jerky. I have Win7 on it also but almost always use MX.

I have MX-21 KDE running happily on a 12 year old HP 8460p laptop that sports a 240GB SSD and 1TB HDD in an upgrade bay as well as 16GB RAM. Runs pretty snappily on this quad core 2nd gen i7 CPU to boot. Even though this machine has basic Intel graphics, no issues related to graphics (albeit not a gaming GPU) either.
In all, MX will be able to bring many older machines back to life especially ones too old to really run any version of Windows reliably.

I am still running an old Dell Latitude D830 with Mx Linux 19.4 & my build own pc desktop with Intel Core i7 920 x58 chipset on KDE 21.1 & Win 10 dual boot. My desktop maybe on the way out unless I can solve potential overheating. * I suspect the Nvidia GTS 250 card. These are from 2005 - 2009 era. I am doing my darnest to squeeze the life out of them. lol Not looking forward to upgrade, but that will come for sure when Win 10 dies in Oct 2025 since I can't udate to WIn 11 which officially launched last Oct 2021.

I still have a running Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop (the actual year and model number have worn off the bottom) with a T2500 2 Ghz Centrino Duo Processor, I believe this was the first 2 core Dell laptop and it was sadly still only 32bit. When I bought it new I spent way too much money on a 1920x1200 screen option but to be honest I never regretted it, it's still a better screen than most mid-level laptops. I upgraded the RAM to 2Gb several years ago and put a Samsung EVO 250Gb SSD.. It's currently running an MX-21 base with Enlightenment..

Dell Latitude 7280
Intel i5-7300U
upgraded from 8GB RAM to 16GB ram
upgraded to 1TB NVME SSD
To me, this is not an 'old' laptop (by my definition), but to many it will be. The battery life is less than 5mins now. If I ever settle on a decent non-Dell battery manufacturer I can trust, then I will replace the battery. I have dropped the laptop more than once (mostly snagging cable-related accidents) and it has survived (no broken hinges, etc.), which has been a very different experience to some other laptops I have used. Good enough for me.

Hi, have the same netbook (U180), just installed the latest 64-bit version of the mx linux, and have a blank screen after the text part of booting, did you have any problems and maybe already fixes?

The ASUS X42D in my signature is from 2011. I don't use it much as it's just a backup laptop, but recently I replaced the Solus that was on it with a snapshot of the MX23 on my newer laptop [the Clevo that's also in my signature]. I'd gone a year plus without upgrading the Solus rolling install, and so the attempted massive upgrade went badly and showed up too many errors.
MX23 works fine but Firefox is slow on it. Since the lappy is only for emergencies, I'm not complaining.
The ASUS is a dualboot and the other distro is the now EOL MX19 that I couldn't bring myself to delete.

On the U180 netbook:
what works for me:
When the boot sequence fails to complete, press Fn + F12.
Netbook goes into suspend, use the power switch (left side) to wake.
You might get a crazy colour scheme, Fix it by going to tty1: press ctrl+alt+F1, and then ctrl+alt+F7
HTH,
Mike
P.S. Dunno why this works, not a HW person...
P.P.S. apologies for being OT

Lenovo T500 laptop running MX 23-4. Works great.
My daily driver is a Lenovo T440p running DO's sysvinit-only MX-23 respin. I've also got MX-23 on a T450 and around here somewhere is a T410 with a broken screen I really should get repaired to see what was on that when I dropped it.
(That was a really sad story. The T410 was my previous daily driver for years and ran Linux far better than it ran FreeBSD. In a hurry one morning to get to a meeting at work I pulled my bag out of the trunk of my car and swung it over my arm, dumping my laptop out of it. It crashed onto the pavement of the parking garage. I scooped it up in a panic and rushed to my meeting which was, in retrospect, absolutely not worth the hustle. The only damage to the T410 was a pushed-in corner that cosmetically deformed the plastic a little bit.
Then, months later, I was walking across my living room with it and it slipped out of my hands. It landed on the carpeted floor with a thud and that was what killed it. Goes to show you never can tell.)

Compaq Presario CQ71. Dual core, 3gb ram, legacy nvidia drivers. Installed the 64b flubox edition. Then i installed my favorite xfce desktop. I use this laptop mainly for writing (and listening to music).
i also had some very successful sessions with this laptop, trying to create and set up a wordpress blog for a friend (with basic photo editing on the fly).

Currently running 23.5 on a 2007 Macbook Pro 17" (3,1 and typing this on it) with 6GB RAM, and a 2009 white Macbook 5,2 with 2GB (one slot dead). Also my backup desktop is a 2011 Mac Mini with 16GB RAM and a 2GHz 8-thread i7, and that runs really well. Main desktop is (for the moment) Win 11, but if MS turn the screws on unsupported machines once Win 10 is killed off, then MX will become my default system. That's an i7-4790 with 32GB RAM, and smokes any OS.
Apart from the wallpaper problem, all is well.
Have tried MX on every Mac I've recently had, and it always works well.

Writing this from a 2014 HP 355 G2. I have another laptop, the first one I ever installed Linux on (MX of course) and that's a 2007 Fujitsu-Siemens. Works splendidly.
