Do any of ya'll play the free Linux games?

Hi does anyone here play any of the free games that can be found in Synaptic Package Manager? I used to be a big gamer but to be honest I couldn't afford to buy games anymore so I finally gave my PS4 and all my games to my youngest son one year for his birthday or for Christmas (can't remember which). I discovered the free Linux games on Synaptic when I was using Linux Mint. Over the years I have found some really cool games on there and the 3D games on there have really nice graphics. I mainly just play games to pass the time when I'm bored. Lots of people don't even realize how many cool games there are for free. There's RPG games, FPS games, puzzle games, brain teasers, card games, emulators, racing games, billiard games, strategy games, and much more. I thought about doing a video on which games are the best and how to install them for those new to Linux and for those who just want something to play to pass the time, but I have no clue as to how to go about doing that. I'm sure I could figure it out quite possibly. I'm not sure if Steam is supported for MX or not but I know Lutris is. Steam is really cool and there's more modern games on there. Lutris just allows you to play games there are supported for Linux. I think Lutris and Steam go hand in hand if I remember correctly. Anyways, I really like the the free Linux games that are available. Some are so simple yet so difficult to beat. Which can be rather challenging at times and that makes it even more fun to play. Anyone else out there enjoy these games as well? If so, which are your favorites?

@CyberGhost,
I believe Steam is available from the MX repos
based on posts in the forum. Check the MX-Package Installer (MXPI) in the Popular Apps section. If not there check the testrepo.
You'll get better info in the morning when the gamers wake-up, in the morning. :)

BTW, I think there is a section on Steam in the MX User Manual. Jerry3904 just released the updated version for 18.3.

Not me. I did almost nothing but play games on my first "real" computer (not counting my TRS-80) which was an IBM clone 386/20 running MS-DOS, and after several months I became permanently burned out on playing games. The only one I played after that for any length of time was Klondike solitaire on Windows 3.1. To this day I get bored in less than an hour of playing any game and quit, and usually end up uninstalling it.

Cool thanks! I didn't know that! I did look in Synaptic for it but didn't see it. However, I didn't look in the testrepo

tbh i don't play games too much since i am only having 2 old dual core 64bit laptops , but since installing mx it's revived with somewhat better performance .
btw , after installing steam you need to install proton , just follow the installation guide from steam's setting . it's not that perfect but it definitely allows old 64 bit laptops , run 55~60 fps on low setting ... when even on windows 7 i have 10~20 fps on low setting , is it just me or maybe gaming on linux is currently having significant advancement ?
even when i run Dragon Nest SEA , i got better performance than before even only if 1~6 fps differences , anyone having similar experience ?

I tested Steam when I installed Mx 18, many months ago and it ran just fine the game I tested ( I think it was the Doom demo), even on my very modest desktop... So I recommend Steam, if you want to play games in MX.
If you are into board games and dig around the internet in general and Sourceforge in particular you can find very good and free versions of Monopoly, Clue/Cluedo, Risk, Settlers of Catan, Carcassone, Dominos, Chess, etc, etc. (most in java format).
Some 12 years ago I was very much into FreeCiv (inspired by the original Civilization games). Freecol is a similar game.
For not very hard core gamers you have SuperTux, TuxRacer, TuxKart, versions of well known "casual" games like supermario and mariokart.

I am not into games much. In fact I usually just have too many other things going on to spend very much time playing games.
Whenever I install MX I always install kpat but even then I only play 40 and 8.
These next few weeks I will be playing it more often because I am recovering from laparoscopic surgery.
I am not the best patient. I get so bored when I can't do all of the normal things.
If I want to heal properly I have to take a vacation from stuff.
Not very good at that. Sorry for going off topic.
Back to you.

I don't have time for games, but would like to try it someday (Use to play back in the day of 8 bit computers and then my Atari ST). The only one I play is AstroMenace, I really like it.

Same here. I tried to get interested in computer games years ago. I had LOTR, and Hobbit computer game, and the Windows XP game where you build civilizations and armies (I forget the name). but got bored with them. I grew up reading for entertainment, so probably born a bit too early to appreciate computer games. I know younger guys that were obsessed with them. We had to use old fashioned imagination when we were kids. As a teen had that lame ping pong computer game, that pretty much killed it for me :)

Not much time for games and I'm never bored and I seem to never have enough free time. Bad managing of my time I guess
But I could use your videos. Sometimes I install MX to people that play games. Hope you get around producing some video on a subject. For a starter, when you get bored, you could post here list of the games you like the best. Hope you do.

Like I said, I've never made a video of any kind so I'm totally clueless about how to do that so it may be a while before that happens. I have a ton of games I downloaded from Synaptic so it would take a little while to list them all. I'll get around to it eventually. I'll probably just make a short list of my most favorite ones in the meantime.

I just got my games from Synaptic Package Manager. Most of them have screenshots but to be honest the screenshots don't always do the games justice. You just have to download them and try them out for yourself. Once you open up Synaptic, scroll down the left column until you see the Games and Amusement section and select it. Then there will be a long list of games to choose from in the right search results area. They each have descriptions. Hope that helps. Also those games from those links are the same ones you can get from Synaptic. To me its easier to use Synaptic.

Here's the list of games I have now that I downloaded from Synaptic Package Manager. I'm also including the games installed by default with MX 18.3. If you want the descriptions of these games then open Synaptic Package Manager, scroll down the left column until you see the Games and Amusement section, select it, then enter the name of the game in the right search box. Note: you don't have to enter the full name of the game. Usually just the first couple/few of the letters will suffice. I haven't played all these games yet because I just downloaded a bunch more. I do have some favorites but I'm not going to list them here. These are the best games out of the list on Synaptic IMO. I'm not really into much strategy games like Wesnoth but lots of people like that game. Anyways hope this helps. Look up the descriptions for each one, check out the screenshots, and decide for yourself. Have fun!

Point of fact (I'm a bit pedantic): they're not "in Synaptic", they're in the MX Stable repository. Synaptic is juts a GUI app for working with that repository: installing, removing, searching for, and browsing packages. Its main advantage is that it lets you read the long descriptions when you click on a package. The MX Package Installer (MXPI) is another GUI tool for working with the repositories that IMO is better than Synaptic because it also allows you to access the MX Testing, Debian Backports and Flatpaks repos without having to add them as in Synaptic or permanently enable them in MX Repo Manager (and doing so and forgetting to disable them afterward would majorly mess up your installation the next time you update MX.) MXPI temporarily enables test, backports or flatpaks when you click on those tabs then disables them again when you exit. The only things it can't do that Synaptic can are allowing you to pin a package at its current version so it won't update and show long descriptions. BTW the command-line tools apt, apt-get and aptitude will let you do the same things as Synaptic.

Well yes, synaptic lists all of the packages in the Debian repositories.
My point was that the metapackages exist to allow easy installation for all of Debian's "finest" games and I linked the package pages so that people could see what those games are if they wanted to install any of them individually.

Sparky, look for 'em listed within synaptic (not MXpackageinstaller).
If you found a game title of interest, for instance "ballz" mentioned on the webpage, search in synaptic to find your ballz

Hi I made another video to give a brief preview of each of my games that I have on my computer. The video is quite long. I didn't plan on it being so long but I have a lot of games. Just trying to give new users a look at the games I think are the best to play IMO. There are some other games in the repos that are worth mentioning and reviewing but I'll have to make a separate video about them at a later date. Anyways hope it helps new users to get a better idea of the popular games before they download them. Sometimes watching the games in action is better than just a screenshot. Thanks for watching! How did you get Xonotic? It's not on any of the MX repos.

Only sudoku and mines, whether gnome or KDE versions depend on what DE and distro I'm in. Even in MX I remove the preinstalled ones and include the above 2.

From the developer's webpage. Anything that isn't in my repositories. I always go to the developers web page. I know how to build from source. A good skill to have. But this package you just download and run. So I'm guessing a binary package.
Download
Latest release: Xonotic 0.8.2 for Linux, Windows and Mac
Download as zip

Anyone ever played "
Civilisation: Call to Power" for Linux?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilizat ... l_to_Power
I once purchased it and played it in Mandrakelinux, I believe, it was. It ran well, I remember.
"
Drone riots" - no, wait, that was "
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri"

(in Windows).
