Just curious what you use the most on MX. Which apps do you use most on MX?
For myself, of course the browser (Chrome), but also LibreOffice, file manager, photos, Pithos for music. Those are among my top applications.

I use most default apps provided...
They are well tested and best.
For documents and presentation:- Libre office
For file management:- Thunar
For browsing:- Firefox
For image editing :- GIMP
For vector design :- Inkscape
For media and video :- VLC
For music :- Clamentine
Default Image viewer is great for all format support along with many good fast editing options.
MX and it's software selection is very good for me and I install additional gimp full, Inkscape and shotcut after installing MX.

Thanks for the idea, interesting news scrolling app
Of apps not already pre-installed I really like of top of my head:
- Speedcrunch (best and fastest calculator evar ;-) )
- Cherrytree (note taking)
- KeePassXC (password manager)
- Calibre (ebook manager & reader...)
- Ksnip (screenshot & edit/annotation)
- Flameshot (screenshot & edit/annotation)
- Shutter (same as above just trying it and like it has some cool options)
Btw, few weeks ago someone asked similar question, and I think this thread from Manjaro forum is treasure trove and well worth going through if someone is looking for Linux apps ideas. (warning, you may spend more time that you first intended to ;-) )

1. What does it mean, "unanime?"
2. Chrome available through the MX Package Installer or by manually adding the google-chrome repository which is easy. I'm not a fan, but it's not a surprise.

I actually prefer using the unbranded root to Google Chrome- chromium. It's more secure and works almost identically (at least in the way I use it).

It's a total myth that Linux is for hackers and developers.
I see Dolphin uses QT-Creator, but other than that, no one's mentioned Atom, Netbeans, Kdevelop, Eclipse, PyCharm, Wing, or the other heavy-duty IDEs. No test benches, either. No website dev environments.
Nobody spends all day in Nmap, Aircrack, Wireshark, Unicornscan, WOL-E, Dumpzilla, WiFi Honey, joomscan, sqlmap, etc. Nope. Nothing like Hollywood depicts Linux users.
Daily -- Same as everyone else, plus:
ffmpeg
Rosegarden
ZeroBrane Studio (Lua IDE)
VMWare Workstation
Photomatix (HDR photo production)
Plex
Stellarium

Somewhat in order of use:
Firefox, Vivaldi, Clementine, xfce4-terminal, Thunar, Libreoffice, qpdfview, Mirage, Galculator, Simple Scan, Asunder, Shotwell, VLC, MX Live USB Maker.
That mix is influenced lately with digitizing my music and photo collection.

All on Openbox:
Tint2
Volume Icon - tray icon/audio mixer
Udiskie
PIA - VPN
Worker - directory utility (file manager)
Vivaldi
KeepassX2
qBittorrent
Terminator & Sakura - they each have different jobs
VLC
MKVToolNix
MediaInfo
AVIDemux
Geany (nano sometimes)
GHex
qpdfview
Pinta
Viewnior - (giving it a whirl, been using Geeqie for years prior)
Dirsize = df -h
GParted - (lot of drives/partitions, use GParted for reference)
Galculator
Steam
The above are mostly in frequent use (AVIDemux, GHex & GParted & Steam, not so much)
Worker has my file (de)compression handled, though I have FileRoller & GTKHash installed for just in case.
All of the following are rarely used, but they do server their respective purposes:
Inxi, GeoGebra, LXimage Screenshot, ArandR, LMSensors, Powertop, GColor2, Agave, Filezilla - if I happen to have a website, Firefox - as backup, XFBurn, FBReader, FontViewer, LibreOffice, LXAppearance, OBConfigMgr, OBMenu, Qt5 Config Tool - qt5ct.
Once well used tools like HandbrakeCLI are just never called these days.

Google as a company is garbage. They have done so many stupid things in the past few years.
I use Chrome because Firefox continually caused me problems. Also I use an Android phone and Chrome gives me a reliable browser with my passwords and links synced across platforms.

Anyone using galculator or any other calculator, I suggest you really check out Speedcrunch you may like it ;-)
For example when you type in galculator 55*73 after this, you need to press <enter> to see the result. Not with Speedcrunch, result is already there after you type in last number.
It also has a display history (like typewriter) so you can see what you were calculating. Oh, just double clicking on any past number/result in the display, or in history window and it brings that value down into your current calculation.
In terminal "up" arrow cycle through past entries, SpeedCrunch does it too.
It manages much more digits, has tones of already built in functions, it can do almost anything except making coffee. Check it out.
Edit, see attached screenshot, you can see current result without pressing enter and double clicking on upper screen or right side history will bring that part into bottom entry line where you are doing calculations.
And it is very fast. You may need to go to the options and choose to show history first, can't remember any more. There are other things you can have displayed there instead of history, such as functions if you wish.
Bottom line, after I tried it, I can't use anything else, even if it is for small simple calculation, it always saves you one click or press of the button.

I've been using SpeedCrunch even from back when I was on Windows, and it was one of the programs I installed immediately since switching to Linux. It's the only calculator I've needed, though I do slightly miss RPN.
Other programs that come to mind other than the popular ones already mentioned (i.e. LibreOffice, Thunderbird, Firefox, etc.)
-SpeedCrunch
- KDE Marble
- Gnome-Maps (maybe not as full featured as Marble, but I find it handier in some ways, and haven't found out how to get the detailed satellite maps in Marble like they are in Maps)
- Cartes Du Ciel (Star Charts) (Not as flashy as Stellarium, but full featured, not as resource hungry, and seems more professional and accurate in my estimation. Unfortunately is not in the repos, but easily installed from the website.)
- CherryTree
-KeepassXC
-Gnucash
-DB Browser for SQLite
-GoldenDict (dictionary application)
- SMPlayer (One thing I like is how it will start a DVD in the same spot before you took it out. Maybe VLC can too, but I couldn't figure it out off hand.)

I always liked the Xiphos Bible program on Linux. Since I generally have a wifi connection I mostly use Bible Gateway now.
One application I don't think I've seen mentioned is Gramps genealogy program. I've used that quite a bit over the years. Generally stable and reliable and does a good job with gedcom files.

theWord has some excellent modules available. My entire setup is free except for donations, and it includes Greek/Hebrew interlinears with Strong's and morphology, which is an awesome way to dig deeper and to learn the language, and several commentaries and dictionaries. The commentaries scroll with the various Bible windows, as do the interlinear window and one Bible window I use to compare about a dozen versions in parallel on the fly. For me it's very much worth the use of Wine.

Bible Analyzer is another one that has a native Linux version that looks really good. However after spending years with theWord on Windows and all the resources I've obtained and made on it, it would be hard to give up, it does everything. It basically the only reason I have Wine. I also like BibleMemorizer, I just wish it was maintained, or that there was a similar program that is.

On Windows I always used e-sword. Nice program, though some Bible versions cost money even though the program itself is free.

The deb file installed nicely... I will give it a test run. I can use this for clipgrabbing German learning videos "für meine Enkel Söhne". Vielen dank!

Maybe a suggestion for mx-repo?

@dphn I think people would find ClipGrab an nice addition to tools like SMtube. Since you found it... I think asking to have it placed in the repos is your call. @stevo and team will certainly do an excellent job of 'vetting' it before adding it.

I always liked the Xiphos Bible program on Linux. Since I generally have a wifi connection I mostly use Bible Gateway now.
theWord has some excellent modules available.
+1 -- theWord on Wine is definitely the best Bible study solution that I've found, its amazing!!!
https://i.imgur.com/ZgWvQZk.png I used to use e-sword, but theWord is much better IMHO. Gone are the days of spending hundreds of $$$$ on Bible programs/modules, for me anyway.

Agree completely. The clipboard monitor also rocks. There are some features I'm sure Logos does better, but then it can be so overbearing I'm not sure it's worth it. And Logos certainly rules on content. But for my needs, theWord really does some heavy lifting. Here's my setup, the star of which is the interlinear with morphology, center-top.

On mine, I use the three-column layout, which is the max. The column on the right is really two floating windows.

it's very similar to eSword, in that the Base program is Free, & then there is some paid Add-Ons.
NB: due to popular demand, the Author of eSword has ported the program to to other Platforms,
& including iOS - which is, of course, a Paid Version.
- it's a Good Program, & the Guy has ben working pn that project, for many, many years, now.
also2: I've got both of these programs, working under Linux & have exported them both to an Archive,
as an back-up, too.

Do make sure that you UNcheck "Use skinned window border" (setting under View/Skin on menubar) as it will potentially cause problems, especially if you use multiple monitors.
There's lots of tweaking to do...I found all the diff features just by clicking around on all the little icons and drop-arrow buttons, etc.
EDIT: ya once you set it as I stated above you''ll be able to just double-click on title bar and theWord will then properly
full screen maximize.

my first post on this great forum! Love MXLinux -have moved from Mint. Main harware Thinkpad W520 and X230.
Apps:
Chrome browser
R-Studio ( took a bit of effort getting everything installed including RStan for Bayesian models
Anaconda/Python( also took a bit of effort)
WXMaxima - computer algebra system
Libreoffice Calc
Galculator
VLC ( I use this for my music collection as well as video)
Darktable and Shotwell for photography
PCManFM and SpaceFM file managers - I use SpaceFM when I want todo stuff in Root
KeepassXC - for keeping notes on various personal accounts etc
Timeshift for recovery on localmachine
MXTools - Snapshot/Live USB works brilliantly to have your configured OS+Apps on USB and installation various machines - I have a few!
TLP and TLPUI for power management - needs acpi-call-dkms
All in all I am very pleased now that I have everything set up. The machine runs cool. Ram usage after boot is a bit under 300MB.

A couple ofadditional points:
- Thunar was verrry slooow in starting up and behaved erratically - thats why I switched to PCManFM and SpaceFM
- text editor:I am using gedit
- pdf viewer: qpdfview
- Also for MXtools - in Snapshot I tried lz4 compression and the live boot failed. So went back to the xz compression.
- The Archive Manager is superb for storing old tax and financial stuff securely.

That was a good deal on the X230. I've got a X220, T410, and just picked up a 11e Thinkpad. These are great machines :)

yeah - and it has the IPS screen as well. I have a X220 which I bought new in 2011. Recently bought two X230s. Also have a couple of W520s ! I dont like the new laptops-so I stocked upon the last good generation!

I was on Windows 7 until a few months ago. Hearing the horror stories about Windows 10 and the subscription/ads/spyware model that MS seems to be moving to - I decided tocheck out linux. Was happy with Mint-mate. Then I came across MX and here are the big reasons I am excited by MX:
- MX Tools -superb. Especially the snapshots/liveUSB tools. Also the boot management tools and boot repair ( this might come in handy in case windows borks the machine and messes up grub -I have a couple of my machines on dual boot).
- The Debian 9 base seems pretty solid and has long term support. Mint seemed to get updates every day ,not MX.
- The package installer is better than Mint's( not as pretty, but more powerful).
Life is better without windows!

firefox, palemoon, mx tools, qbittorrent, Thunar (NOT my favourite file manager...that would be Krusader), xfce terminal, mpv, smplayer (Both far better than vlc in my opinion), digikam, gimp, libeoffice-writer.
Sadly, Krusader pulls in a heck of a lot of KDE packages, so does Digikam and the Debian version is ancient. I use Appimage for Digikam. I've not found a better alternative for Digikam in linux. Appimage works fine so I'm happy.
Wondering if anyone knows an alternative for Krusader. Twin-panel Orthodox File Manager with at least one side panel that can show file Preview and has an embedded terminal with lots of customization options.

Tried sunflower and Doublecmd. Couldn't get Preview side panel to work. Sunflower didn't load terminal. Kept saying Python VTE module missing. libvte is installed but I couldn't find any python vte package in repos.
Also tried spacefm. Probably I'm too used to Krusader. Can't get all the features I want in another file manager. Most twin-panel file managers offer a tree-view or "Places" side panel. Not a big fan of that. I'm looking for either Preview or Information(as found in Dolphin) side panel. Preferably both but not even Krusader has both.

+1 For Cinelerra, especially Cinelerra-GG, It is truly heads above most other Linux NLE's, I can't believe how it doesn't get recognized, I use it regularly for production and not even Kdenlive can do what it does with large multitrack Audio and Video projects. The original Cinelerra from Heroine Virtual was difficult, the CV version lacked features and forward momentum for many years, but Cinelerra-GG is a complete game changer!
+1 also for Avidemux, VERY useful!
*side note this stuff all comes pre-installed and ready to use on my MX Multimedia Creation Respin AV Linux MX Edition..

Little has changed for me, apart from the fact that:
Pitivi finally made the running as a video editing programme.
It can't do as much as others, but it's everything I need and, unlike the new openshot 3, it's stable and fast. Shotcut is somewhere in between ...
shutter encoder has also finally replaced handbrake.
For a bit of sound editing, the old 2.6 Audacity is still enough for me.
I've been using Rawtherapee since 2006, nothing will change there.
There is still no Linux alternative to JPG-Illuminator.
Filemanagment: pcmanfm, but Thunar is still installed.
internet: Firefox, Seamonky Suite, Transmission
Listen to music: MOC (music on console), but deadbeef is still installed
Notes/Text collections: Cherrytree and FeatherNotes (at some point I will have to decide)

Pitivi finally made the running as a video editing programme.
It can't do as much as others, but it's everything I need and, unlike the new openshot 3, it's stable and fast. Shotcut is somewhere in between ...
Pitivi huh..? Is it still based on Gstreamer?
I've installed and removed Openshot 3, Shotcut and Davinci Resolve this month, much promised but little delivered, Resolve wouldn't even work with an AMD RX6750XT Video card! Shotcut has the most future promise I think, most of it's tutorials are on Windows curiously

May I ask from where you installed Cinelerra?
It's not in the MX Repos, it is distributed from it's site as an AppImage (to be clear Cinelerra-GG), always works terrific here!

@wdscharff
Would you mind expanding on Pitivi (and/or vs. Shotcut) just a little bit more?
It's a matter of taste, pitivi is, for me, easier to use than shotcut.
Openshot (v3) is then a programme where you will love the auto safe function ... and the jerks and hang-ups when you want to go through a 20-minute video (from 10 stitched together).
I also always have the system load, thread scaling and speed on my screen. (the fact that my conky is so excessive is related to this).
pitivi was faster with a lower system load, but we're talking about times that are measurable, but not really relevant. (2-3%). maybe it has to do with the fact that it is based on gstreamer and not on ffmpeg ... or is simply better programmed.
I'm referring to the current Flatpak version from our MXPI, which now has a few new features that I missed earlier.
I'm supposed to make a puppy video this weekend, so maybe I'll take some notes along the way.
otherwise my advice is always: try it out for yourself, what suits me doesn't have to suit you.

yes, but why should that be important to me?
Shotcut times might really be the safest choice in the long run, but I still have this little irrational component that something has to be easy for me to use :-)
I installed the nvidia drivers especially for da vinci ... and then it won't install properly. A programm for which I first have to search for and install additional dependencies, tinker around for over an hour so that the start-up screen is visible for a second ... that may be great, but I won't do that to myself again, there are too many alternatives that are sufficient for me!

@wdscharff
Thanks, I think I will give it a go.
BTW, I'm pretty familiar with Openshot.
I just started using Shotcut, It's a little cumbersome and lacking when adding text, but I like the simple I,O to cut In and Out.
@AVLinux
Yes, I recall now (Cinelerra) as you provided me with your links.
Were you using the latest Shotcut version (22.12.21)? Stevo recently added it to Testing.
Would it export for you? I would not for me without installing Melt-7, Stevo had to add it as a dependency.
Thank You both for replying.

Well if it works for you it is of little importance, GStreamer seems to me to be a thing of the past kept around for early Gnome compatibility and most Audio and Video Editing apps seemed to migrate away from it years ago in favour of libav/ffmpeg or their own support libs (ie melt in Shotcut and libopenshot in OpenShot). It seems other projects ran into significant issues using GStreamer and expecting it to do Editing operations even though it handles streaming OK. I don't see it having a long future shelf life but as the saying goes "nothing succeeds like success" and if you're having success that is what matters.
