Is everyone set to stream the World Cup 2018 on their wide-screen monitors? Anyone with any tips on how to get the games? Are Argentina good enough for Messi to get them very far?

I get them on cable so no issues there.
The NL are not participating, so I am rooting for Belgium. Of course

I used to watch every game in the past World Cups, not sure if I will do this time, I kind of lost interest. Maybe my interest will pick up with better matches, more interesting teams, can't say I really cared about Russia and Saudi Arabia...
Since I don't have a team I will root for the smallest: Go Iceland!

Pretty much a neutral here, so I'll just watch matches that look to be a good match between 2 teams that play nice football.
Example - Portugal v Spain tonight looks promising.

Germany and Mexico might be interesting as well, although I don't know how good the current Mexican team are. Sunday.

World Cup goal celebrations ‘cause earthquake’ in Mexico City
https://www.rt.com/sport/430033-world-c ... arthquake/
Mexico’s Institute of Geological and Atmospheric Research reported an increase in seismic activity at exactly the moment Lozano scored in the 35th minute of the game against reigning champions Germany – sparking mass celebrations among the thousands in the stadium in Moscow and the millions watching back home.

The Germany-Mexico game was awful. While Mexico did play well, I don't know why Germany even bothered to show up for the game with how poorly they played. On top of it was the bias referee that gives a yellow card in the first half to the German player that was mugged by the Mexico player that had his arms around the German player. Mr. Magoo could see this and would have been a better referee. Even with this horrendous refereeing, it didn't impact the end result of the game but that referee should be fired. Congratulations to Mexico.

That's how it looks when you meet a better team, or a team that has a style that can annihilate your style, sometimes is luck -- I don't count Germany out by any measure.

I've never liked football, as one friend recently remarked, 'where's the fun in watching 22 millionaires chasing a ball round a field'!" As a teen I went to watch Arsenal play a live game in an effort to find something interesting in it. So bored by half time I went for a wander around London shops instead and met the coach back home to Peterborough/ Stamford in time.
Still, each to his own!

I caught quite a few games this year. I watch on Telemundo, even though I don't understand half of what's being said. And I'm okay with that because I don't really want to listen to what the "experts" have to say, anyway. I enjoy seeing the games and, I don't know, there's something about having survived another four years, being here to even have the opportunity to watch the World Cup again. What I like most: Beautiful passing, outstanding play by the goalies, and seeing the players and fans from all over the world. I couldn't care less about who wins it all, really.

I watched the replay of the match with my sons and from what I heard I thought they were really lucky but that's not true. Possession of the ball doesn't mean victory and the match statistics are clear: more shots more shots on goal, less faults and indeed a strong defense.

Right, In modern football, ball possession is no longer very important, it requires above all a good defense, a good goal, and an insistive and efficient counter-attack with very fast players. And as usual a little luck.

Having the french nationality, i can assure you that, from my point of view, this so-called victory is gonna be an embarrassment for months if not even years, since I'm a strong opposant to sports professionalization and both intellectual and economical crookeries like the Mondial Cup - or any professional competition in sports, AFAIC.
Furthermore, the tell affirming "Country X has won", "congrats to Country X", "bravo Country X citizens" could be located somewhere around a meeting point between common myths, deliberate lies, cerebral void and propaganda. Located in Ubu Roi's, orwellian and kafkaian fictional worlds.
So... Yes : the so called victory is going to be a pain in the ass for months - and even years, due to a large part of my fellow-citizens (or even the world-citizens AFAIK, that I'd so enjoy to call fellows too) tendancies to be so adept of this kind of forgery, patriotic bigotery and love for their own falls in traps. I will have to listen to all these nonsenses for years, and over ten times a day during the following weeks.
My deepest condolences,
cordially yours, k_sz

Living in the countryside far from civilization is good : no car horns, only silence. That's so pleasant
EDIT : but I have to admit they deserve the victory. Without Lloris blunder that would have been 4-1. Anyway I don't know why football is loved by so many people (in France we have one of the best handball team in the world, if not the best, but they received much less media attention).

This was a fun World Cup, I thoroughly enjoyed it, I'm so happy the final didn't end to be a terse boring 1-0 with a team scoring from a dubious offside position or getting a goal when the ball didn't cross the goal line or if it was pushed in the net with the hand...

Same with the disabled folk here. We have world leading tennis players in this country. ONE station gave them some attention. Does it get aired on TV? Nope.
It's all about demand.
k_sz: just turn off the tv, I only turn it on when I want to see something in particular. The rest like news on the internet: shrug and move on.

No TV in my homes, mate - since approximatively 25 years. Also, no need for an internet connexion to meet or read professional afficionados since propaganda has been widely spread since decades - with (at least in occidental countries) a gap between Roman empire and early 20th century AFAIK.

No shame at all for being considered as a killjoy when the arguments of the so called 'killjoy' are deeply rooted, based and solid, when the source of said joy is, in facts, a rotten swamp (my POV, though - it could be also named "Stairway to Heaven" but, even out of any copyright interest, i disagree(*)) of lies, greed, bias, false flags and ethico-political bs, the whole of it disguised as a dailycious donut.
No shame at all to express a founded disagrement nor to point out that the source of this patriotic carnaval's trance is a trap.
And no need either to go godwinesque when comparing a crowd to another, eg. both of these crowds blessing knowned forgeries and obvious crowd control aka propaganda. Who could really want to argue about "people"="lucid" ?
Your assumption that one, being at risk of shame while identifying theirselves as a member of a group/cult, would avoid this shame of disagreeing with said group by howling with the wolves/mobbing with the bullies, is in line with my POV. The crowd of (un)voluntary clients is partying because the pimp has succeeded. On a gagné !
And well, all of this isn't about an event being knowned as ephemere, it's about a forgery being, deliberately and not, ignored as perennial.
PS : I may have to add something like "No hard feelings", and a smiley :D So :
No hard feelings :D just chatting.
And I can assure you that the above is much truer than a dystopian & multiversal me smiling while singing the top of my lungs the notorious gangrene called "La Marsellaise" ! Not necessarily chanted after, during or before a sportive competition, though.
(*) Let's name it "Shiny Happy People"

Interesting comments by k_sz. Lol, I am certainly not the sports-crazed kid I used to be! Pro sports, ("American") college football, I see all of that silliness in a much different light these days. I've backed off from all that to a very large degree over the past few decades. I used to pay for cable tv mainly so that I could watch ESPN. Now, my tv stays turned off most of the time, and I don't spend a dime on cable (I watch World Cup on Telemundo -- "free" tv!). I don't wear caps and shirts that show off my allegiance to certain teams like I used to. Got rid of the jerseys and everything. I think I've become somewhat of a "killjoy" myself, like when someone asks something like, "What's your team?", and I have to admit that, well, I really don't have a team. Ha-ha, I like when the underdog wins, more than anything.
On the other hand, Life is short, and too often, very difficult. Sometimes ya just wanna chill, kick back and enjoy things a little bit. Football (aka "soccer") can be such a beautiful game, and World Cup is an opportunity to celebrate another four years "on this side of the grass," as they say. It's kinda nice seeing the players and fans from all over, in a venue where folks are not engaged in killing each other off. We're all children of the same world, right? Nothing else like this rock in all the Universe, for all we know.
So, k_sz, I say: Relax. Smile a little bit. The good and the bad are all part of the same whole, in the end, seems to me. If people wanna get all caught up in this sort of thing, so what?

I like football and have done so for decades. When played by 2 skilful sides, it's wonderful to watch. No apologies from me for enjoying the game and following this World Cup.
I do feel sorry for Croatia because I question the awarding of the freekick that led to France's first goal and the penalty decision. Croatia played really well, but ultimately they lacked the final finishing touch and couldn't put the ball in the net despite their chances. I think France just about shaded it on the night.

As seems to happen in most world wide sports tournaments, there is some disagreement about the result. Although the 'round ball' version of football does not lead in our country there are many followers of the game. However, this thread has nothing to do with MX-Linux. May I respectfully suggest that the thread be closed - for another few years.

It may have nothing to do with MX linux, but it IS in the chat section of the forum and people are free to talk about other things here. Just don't visit this thread and you won't know what is in it
