Harddrives renaming themselves?

Upon boot I think it says master slave somewhere. I have no idea what things are set as right now

I will have a looksee on the next one.

There was one old connector on the motherboard that the Plextor (IIRC) was plugged into. and it was set as master for a reason, but that reason I'd have to ask that friend of mine, I cannot remember. What I do know is that M11 M12 and all the other Mepis releases since 2010 or so handled it fine.

Phone with him.. It COULD be that it is set to cable select still. No idea yet.
He said there was no specific reason to set it to master, it may be set to slave, doesn't matter.

So what is the dealie with those links as I just have no idea what this all means? Set plextor to slave and that should sort this out?

I might want to try that jumper thingie first. Tomorrow I will see if I can enslave my Plextor and maybe that will sort it already, who knows.

The Master/Slave setting is, or at least can be, extremely important. Depends on the Hardware and Software (Firmware on the optical drive) and the kernel that's being used (and the way it's built).

Cable Select (CS) is probably (mostly) the safest setting. However, even CS can cause problems. CS at one time was worse. You had to have the Master and Slave settings correct given what the BIOS was set at (given the particular setup and kernel).

I'll dive in tomorrow.. it is dark here now and I need to see something without having to add a light.

I will set that plextor to slave, which to me (without reading all the links) sounds like the most logical step to take; the harddrive is likely set as master, and there cannot be two captains on a ship so to speak

Starting with the 80-wire cable defined for use in ATAPI5/UDMA4, the master device goes at the end of the 18-inch (460 mm) cable—the black connector—and the slave device goes on the middle connector—the gray one—and the blue connector goes onto the motherboard. So, if there is only one (master) device on the cable, there is no cable stub to cause reflections. Also, cable select is now implemented in the slave device connector, usually simply by omitting the contact from the connector body.

Those positions on the PATA Cable should be reflected in the drive jumper settings.

Make a note on how things are setup now so you can return to a working setup if needed.

I am only changing a jumper, not cables. If I start having to change cables I am calling in that friend of mine, because I am not comfortable around the hardware on my own. If someone is there who I can show and who knows what to do it's different

All that's needed is that the Jumpers ahould match the position on the Cable of Master and Slave. Shouldn't have to move anything except the Jumper/s. May not need to move either one. May have to move only one. It's possible that both will need to be moved, but unlikely. I'm betting that they are probably where they need to be already and you won't have to move anything. Sleep well.
