MX-23 beta 2 feedback thread

Re: MX-23 beta 2 feedback thread
Ok, I think I've isolated the problem further. Wayland seems to work fine on nouveau (though it was a very quick test) but the proprietary Nvidia drivers make Wayland instantly crash on session start. I wonder if the Nvidia Driver Installer isn't set to properly configure the system for Wayland operation yet maybe?

Re: MX-23 beta 2 feedback thread
Doing some super quick looking online, it looks like Wayland with Nvidia proprietary drivers may still just be flat out non-functional in general right now. I'm gonna download Debian 12 and install it and see if I get the same issue.dolphin_oracle wrote: Tue Jul 04, 2023 6:12 pmsomeone tells me what that is and maybe we can fix that.Arnox wrote: Tue Jul 04, 2023 5:47 pmOk, I think I've isolated the problem further. Re: MX-23 beta 2 feedback thread
UPDATE: Yep, Debian 12 has the exact same behavior. Nvidia drivers are installed along with the appropriate Xorg config generated, then Wayland just refuses to open a session after that.dolphin_oracle wrote: Tue Jul 04, 2023 6:12 pmsomeone tells me what that is and maybe we can fix that.Arnox wrote: Tue Jul 04, 2023 5:47 pmOk, I think I've isolated the problem further. I did find this: https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#Wayland
In Debian 12 (currently Debian Testing), almost all issues should be resolved and most Wayland sessions should "just work" with the 495-series driver, however some major issues remain with KDE Plasma. These will require merging KDE's Qt 5 patch collection to fix: https://salsa.debian.org/qt-kde-team/qt ... requests/5
Re: MX-23 beta 2 feedback thread
Forgive me if this isn't anything to worry about!
I have been pretty impressed with the Beta as I tried it on a new home-built PC and not only did the PC run without issues but the Beta software also installed and found everything without complaint or the need to edit config files. However I did notice that after a couple of updates apt gave warnings about amdgpu (I am using AMD Ryzen 7 5700G without a dedicated Graphic Card currently). This is a screen shot of the latest one:

Re: MX-23 beta 2 feedback thread
Dear Developers,
I can confirm Debian 12 with Gnome and a Nvidia graphics card.
Wayland is not compatible with the proprietary Nvidia driver.
I have 2 USB keys with 2 installations.
a) A Debian 12 Gnome USB key with the « nouveau » driver and Wayland.
b) A Debian 12 Gnome USB key with the proprietary Nvidia driver - X display server, so without Wayland.
In Debian 12, you need to start the session with the X display server and install the proprietary Nvidia driver.
When you restart, Wayland is automatically deleted.
Please note;
1) I don't know if KDE Plasma is still able to work with the X display server. I haven't tested it under Debian 12.
2) Gnome does not work in the same way with the « nouveau » driver as with the proprietary Nvidia driver. For example: when you click on the Gnome dock icon, you no longer have focus on the window that opens with the proprietary Nvidia driver. So there could also be differences for KDE Plasma with the 2 drivers.
My Nvidia GTX960 graphics card is able to decode YouTube VP9.
With the « nouveau » driver, I get a lot of « dropped frames » in YouTube's « Nerd Stats », especially if I move the mouse to my second screen.
The proprietary Nvidia driver makes much better use of my graphics card and I get almost no dropped frames with 60 fps (full HD 1080p).
It's not easy to choose between the 2 drivers. Each has its advantages.
Best regards,
Wallon

Dear Developers,
Localization
Debian 11 and Debian 12 automatically configure the "papersize" file.
In my case, Debian 12 puts "a4" in the file.
MX Linux never localizes this file.
Why doesn't MX Linux do the same as Debian?
This is an important variable for configuring certain software.
Best regards,
Wallon

Re: MX-23 beta 2 feedback thread
Dear Developers,
When installing Debian 12, LibreOffice and Firefox are directly localized in the installation language.
Why doesn't MX Linux set the installation language directly for the software?
It would be easier for new users.
