I needed to edit an entry in the menu, used menu editor. There was a yellow bar stating there were errors on desktop files.

Clicked on details, it says:

Hmm.. come to think of it, COULD be that that sailed along with the dvdstyler install from the multimedia repo, need to check on that.

Some of the stuff I usually install from MX's own repos, eg qmplay and ksnip, are not there yet, naturally.

I'll only put in a package request after mx23 is released.

Maybe try (and test) also the new tool "User Installed Packages" (type "uip" into the menu search field), which allows to generate a list packages installed on existing system. And by using the generated package list file it would allow to re-install those packages on the new system. The package not available would be saved into another file. The tool is available also within the MX21 repos.

Disk manager, auto mounting partitions also took the root pass now. Automounted the ntfs data drive, but type was set to ntfs, not ntfs-3g. Changed manually using the dropdown. I vaguely remember this was changed to be ntfs-3g automatically already?

Maybe reset (remove) the existing ntfs entry first. It should pre-select ntfs-3g (read/write driver) for detected ntfs-partitions.

something is up with disk-manager. on bookworm, all the drives are checked whether mounted or not. mine are defaulting to ntfs-3g though. same version on bullseye is fine.

Maybe this should be on another thread as Jerry said, and I don't recall exactly why I wasn't satisfied with gThumb; I think it didn't go to the next image with arrow right, and didn't always open alphanumerically - possibly the view too.
I quickly researched and tried several and decided to go with Mirage.

Just now tested:
With gThumb, e.g. if you open four images, it shows all four, then you must select one of them to open it but it does not open the next one with arrow-right.
With Mirage, it opens the first one, and opens the next one with arrow-right.

Again, I don't exactly recall the other issues.
Just mentioning.

In gThumb go to the hamburger menu>Keyboard Shortcuts and you'll see the mappings. Left and Right arrows are mapped to left and right scrolling in an image which is being viewed at higher zoom levels. Page Up and Page Down to move from image to image. I remap a number of their shortcuts due to muscle memory from FastStone which I use under Wine (not so much these days since the end of Wine 2.1 - comtcl32 issues) but the habit is still there.
gThumb's image editing tools are a bit basic but for simple crop/adjustment etc it's not bad.

Geeqie is a very good viewer (IMHO the best at what it does) There are no editing tools apart from basic orientation etc but it does have plugins to allow you to open images direct in other tools for editing. However there are a huge number of viewing options - the Pan viewer allows you to flip between timelines, folders, and calendar - where you get a literal calendar and the number of pics taken on that date. Quick click and out pops a window of thumbnails for that date. Oh and it is colour profile aware.

Geeqie is my default viewer and a trip to Darktable is just a right click away if needed. You do have to set Expand Menu and Toolbar in the general preferences for max flexibility of the interface.

I'm having issues getting the "allow non-root users to mount internal drives" setting to stick.

It's enabled already,

but every time I try to mount a partition after unmounting it (eg my MX21 partitions), the authentication/password window opens again.

I wager you did this, but have you run the recent updates on it yet?

Orage: at the request of a user, I've been testing the notification apparatus. The visual works well so far, but the sound alarm has so far eluded me. Looking into it a bit, I see that there is a default sound defined under Edit > Preferences. It does not play correctly on my Live test machine (just noise) and it seems to ignore the alarm set for the particular event.

I will pursue.

Assuming this was directed at me, yes. But I haven't rebooted.
