Update:-

Vmware's latest offering (16) installed and running on MX19.3 here now, but it behaves just like v15 on MX18: will not run a guest because "....vmmon missing*.

Behaviour of Vmware is different now: when trying to start the guest no mention of vmmon; instead the popup says "The virtual machine is powered off or suspended"

Sorry to revive this old thread but I am still experiencing this problem:-
Vmware player runs fine with systemd but not with sysvinit.

Could systemd-shim be improved to make vmware work with sysvinit?

its not systemd-shim, systemd-shim loads neither kernel modules nor starts services. its the fact that I'm pretty sure vmmware needs an init script that works with sysVinit.

Possibly. Or possibly an init script could be written if the systemd stuff is just launching a service or something.

I recently installed VMWare Player, and I ran into the same problem. I resolved it by adding the following line to /etc/rc.local:

/etc/init.d/vmware start
