MX-Workbench Community Respin

Thank you everybody for suggestions and testing, we have just finished uploading the MX-Workbench respin to our server:
http://mxrepo.com/snapshots/Community_Respins/
Direct link:
http://mxrepo.com/snapshots/Community_R ... 17.2-1.iso
This respin is meant to be a “Swiss Army” kind of tool for Sysadmins and also as a showcase for how easy is to customize and remaster MX Linux (here all the credit goes to BitJam and his wonderful Live tools). The idea is that a user would write this to a flashdrive and then customize it further by using
Persistency and
Remaster, and even
create a new ISO for backup, distribution, or copy on another flashdrive.
GUI Tools (or tools available in the GUI Launcher):
-Disk Management: gparted, clonezilla, gsmartcontrol, baobab, disk-manager, qt4-fsarchiver, nwipe, testdisk
-GRUB Boot Functions: mx-bootrepair, grub-customizer
-File Management: mc, xfburn, freefilesync, grsync, file-roller, gftp, meld
-Antivirus: clamav
-File Recovery: photorec
-Hardware Info
-Network: ceni, wireshark, zenmap, linssid, mx-findshares
-Live USB Tools, mx-snapshot, mx-remastercc, live-usb-maker-gui
-Misc.: blockout2, geany, terminal
(categories and tools are listed alphabetically in the Launcher)
CLI Tools: chkrootkit, chntpw, clamav, dcfldd, dtrx, dvtm, fping, iputils-arping, iputils-ping, iputils-tracepath, lynx, nmap, rkhunter, screen, telnet, vim, w3m
And many other… And again, the main idea is that is very simple to edit the Custom Tool Launcher, if you want to add/remove stuff from it and then remaster or even create a new ISO. As it stand it’s around 1.2GB, we could have made it a bit smaller but we didn’t want to remove LibreOffice and other tools that might be useful -- we recommend to write it on a 4GB flash drive (2GB will also work) that should have enough space for future updates, remasters, and for your data.
Please give it a spin. Feedback is welcomed. Please suggest other tools to include, this is only a first iteration, we can include more useful tools.

Sounds like a keeper for trouble shooting and checking older and newer hardware out, a bit like kali is for ummm network tools.
Downloading now to give it a try on a kingston 2gig usb 2 older stick.

A+. A great tool to have, multiple tools that is. One needs to keep it handy on a USB to handle all sorts of issues.

A+ from me as well.
Just want to point out that even a 4GB stick is probably not big enough if user plans to remaster and use persistence since there is very little room available eg 1.2G original linuxfs, 1GB rootfs when remastering the new linuxfs will be at least 1.2GB probably larger and then user is prompted to create a new rootfs (which user should accept) all total to c4GB
8GB is better IMO.

Very cool. I like the separate Workbench toolbox and that it runs in root. Have not actually used any of the tools but the whole thing looks very useful with a logical selection of utilities and applications. I like all the file sync and compare tools.
I assume there are backports of newer kernels for 32 bit distros if needed, so a live Workbench stick can be used/run on newer machines ? Does the live kernel installer completely replace the original 3.16 kernel or simply add another boot option to the grub menu?

I used the kernels used by MX-16 32bit, I am sure you can use backported kernels, also BitJam live-kernel-update tool might come in handy.
Workbench Toolbox (the launcher) actually runs as normal user, but most of the items are run as root (they have a "root" flag in the workbench-tool.list file next to their names) I've actually went back and forth between running the entire launcher as root but then not everything needs to run as root and actually Wireshark was complaining about it. I set up sudo to run without password, that's appropriate for this kind of tool which is not really meant to be installed. But if you install and want to change the security setting you need to remove /etc/sudoers.d/workbench-sudoers file.

Thanks Adrian, Bitjam and the rest. It seems that when I have trouble getting a computer to boot from a USB stick, usually a Mac, I always go back the Mepis and now MX. And without fail, the computer recognizes and boots from these great OS'. They have been my go to boot disks/sticks and without fail have never let me down.
Now, with this collaboration, I know it has just moved to the front of the line. In my line of work, we seem to be always looking for tools like these. I never gave the beta's a test drive, but will start as soon as I can get it on a stick.
Do you want to put this up on a torrent?

Thanks for that nice piece of work. Two comments:
1. If this were available in a 64-bit edition, I'd rather use this as a future install base than the full-blown MX-16 ISO. Is has some things I'd need to install anyway and it doesn't have many things I do not need. Once I know more about doing this sort of thing, I might be interested in helping to produce a 64-bit version.
2. I have looked into the various tools but not exhaustively so (so perhaps I am missing the obvious) and I seem to be unable to find a hex editor that can edit sectors on HDs, USB sticks etc.

There's CLI hexedit, if anybody knows a nice GUI please let me know and I can add it.
It's relatively easy to do a 64bit release, it's just a bit annoying to do it. Initially had in mind to do only a 64bit release but then people mentioned that they still have some hardware that cannot do 64bit. This is also not really meant for installation although there's nothing wrong with installing it (except I mentioned before, users in sudo group will be able to use sudo without a password -- which can be easily changed by removing the /etc/sudoers.d/workbench-sudoers file).

@Adrian: Oh, I thought hexedit only does files, but I've just checked and indeed, it does support devices! So thanks. I actually installed a small app called
wxHexEditor (yep, GUI) to be able to edit /dev/sd*. Problem with that is that it's not completely stable, as I had a few crashes... and a crash while editing a partition table doesn't inspire trust.
As to a 64-bit version, now I am all set to go with MX-16 anyway. Perhaps for MX-17? The /etc/sudoers.d thing is not a big deal as I have to change stuff there anyway.

Here's some including wxHexEditor that bwich12 mentioned:

I haven't used wxHexEditor but have used Okteta back with some of the KDE4 MEPIS releases.

@Adrian: Thanks for the 64-bit version, appreciated. ghex as hex editor is probably a good addition (certainly better than wxHexEditor) but it can't be used to edit sectors on block devices. CLI hexedit can:-)

Adrian, I've been wanting to say thanks for your respin, it really is a feat in its own right, and has come in very useful a few times as its a quick download and no fuss to have the tools right there and ready.
A useful addition may be some firmware updating software, for things a lot of people need for flashing common hardware.
For example, I needed to load MegaRAID MegaCLI and the newer StorCLI to flash some raid controllers.
I needed StorCLI version 1.21.06, as the new version seems to have dropped support for older controllers and just is for the latest and greatest.
The software is at the link below and is MR 6.14 version 1.21.06 for "All OS". I installed the storcli_1.21.06_all.deb and didn't have issues flashing four controllers with it. The Linux folder in the archive tricks you, its really just an .rpm file.
https://www.broadcom.com/support/downlo ... +Tools&dk=
I sadly actually read the download license, it doesn't seem to restrict including it, but I'm no lawyer and I may have dozed off as I scrolled through that section.
A few others worth looking at that I often find myself using are:
iperf, dmraid, fio, Bonnie++, stressapptest
Ignore this if they are already in there, don't have the USB right in front of me.

I will probably upgrade the ISO on the MX17.1 base soon, I could remove Libreoffice, but I want the tool to be fully featured, not to subtract things. Also, like I mentioned before, this is meant to be a showcase of what could be done not necessarily to create a perfect tool for everybody, if you want a version without LibreOffice you could remove LibreOffice and take a snapshot and voila you have your own custom ISO without LibreOffice.

According to Wikipedia
LZ4 was also implemented natively in the Linux kernel 3.11.[5] The FreeBSD, Illumos, ZFS on Linux, and ZFS-OSX implementations of the ZFS filesystem support the LZ4 algorithm for on-the-fly compression.[6][7][8][9] Linux supports LZ4 for SquashFS since 3.19-rc1.[10]
It's already in the kernel. Or am I missing something?

I updated Workbench to be based on MX-17.1
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-lin ... y_Respins/
Here are some notable changes:
- removed LibreOffice to make a bit more room and added Abiword just in case somebody needs to open a .doc
- removed Installer -- this is not meant for installation
- added some requested apps
List of packages added over MX regular tools (like GParted and the like that are already installed in MX Linux):
abiword - as mentioned
bonnie++
ceni
chkrootkit
chntpw
clamav
clamtk
clonezilla
dcfldd
dmraid
dtrx
dvtm
fio
fping
freefilesync
fsarchiver
geany
gftp-gtk
ghex
grsync
iperf
iputils-arping
iputils-ping
iputils-tracepath
linssid
lynx
meld
nmap
nwipe
partclone
rkhunter
screen
stressapptest
telnet
vim
w3m
wakeonlan
wireshark
zenmap
And of course blockout2 to pass your time while waiting for a scan or backup process to finish
Please let me know if you want to see something else added/removed for the next release -- I won't upgrade this too often, maybe once or twice a year.
Again, this is mostly a showcase for how easy is to customize to make MX work for you, you can take this one and continue to customize it for your needs, remove/add packages and then take an easy snapshot with MX Snapshot or remaster if you run from USB Live with persistency. I'm sure there are many ways to make better in general and better suited for your particular needs.

Does it look like something that could affect Thunar network function? Otherwise I don't know why the functionality would change...

gvfs-backends ( This package contains the afc, afp, archive, cdda, dav, dnssd, ftp,
gphoto2, http, mtp, network, sftp, smb and smb-browse backends.)
which brought in:
libgdata-common
libgdata22
libgoa-1.0-0b
libgoa-1.0-common
libimobiledevice6
libnfs8
liboauth0
libplist3
libusbmuxd4
Now seems to be working.

@Adrian,
Thanks again for Workbench tool. I really like having a frugal Workbench install on my computers.
It's handy to have it so easily at hand. Currently using the WB_18.3_386 on an Acer One netbook
where these points came up. Also on the T430.
Although it uses demo & root, the root password doesn't work for me, calling from the menu.
Nearly all of the utilities in the Workbench Tools Launcher do start up as root,
only a couple failed for me. They are all available from a root terminal, if needed.
1. Fails from the Tools Launcher:
a. grub-customizer failed: could not find canonical path to 'overlay'
(you mentioned that's because of no grub, maybe needs a dialog to find grub)
b. linssid doesn't do anything, though it runs from a terminal.
2. Fails from main menu: All from menu that ask for a root password: just get 'Incorrect password.'
synaptic, etal: can open with 'sudo su -c synaptic'
This is just food for thought for a next iteration.
I know you built the Workbench to show the virtues of snapshot, and it is a handy tool.

The view at 1024x600 :)

Synaptic launched for me with "root" password, can anybody else confirm? Linsisd need "root" added to /etc/custom-toolbox/workbench-tools.list config file because it needs to run as root.
Should we keep grub-customizer since there's no GRUB in the Live environment? As I mentioned before this MX Workbench ISO is not meant to be installed it's intended only for Live use.

Would it be possible to have grub-customizer be pointed at the disk drive that controls the boot?
Just a thought.
Most of what it does is cosmetic. And can be done manually, if I can find my notes. :)
Using these GUIs causes soft RAM rot.

I really don't know I don't use GRUB customizer, I think after it shows the error that it cannot find the "overlay" you can select "Environment settings" and select the desired partition, you might need to specify where the grub.cfg and the like go (maybe mount that partition first)

I'll give it a try when it finishes remastering.
As I remember though, it closed after putting away the error dialog.
The more I think about it, I agree with you, it is really not necessary on Workbench.
Grub-customizer is aimed at configuring grub on an installed system.
No grub on WB, no need for it.

Yeah, it seems like it's possible to use but you need to jump through some hoops, I think it's OK if I don't include, if somebody is willing to jump through the hoops they can do the extra step of "apt-get install grub-customizer"

So, I've downloaded all the appropriate Workbench items into a 17.1 installation, using the listing from github. Do I have to recreate the "Workbench Tools Launcher" somewhere in my menus, or is it available already? And yes, you can freely assume that this is going to be a "learning experience" for me. I am an infrequent modifier (broken too many things too often, and don't enjoy reloading things all over again all that much). But, if I have to load Workbench from USB on one box and recreate it here I can do that.
Thanks,
Phil (in NY)

What do you try to do? Depending on that I can recommend a procedure. Don't go blindly and install stuff from github, some things are not for regular installations.
Frankly the easiest way is to download the MX-Workbench ISO and modify that, if you just want the tools that I usually install you can look here:
https://github.com/AdrianTM/workbench-d ... install.sh
But again, I don't recommend installing stuff blindly, the "Workbench Defaults" will mess up your installation, that's why I have that set up in my github repo not in the MX Linux one (I will add a disclaimer in README).

OOPS! Thanks Adrian. As far as I can tell I didn't mess anything up too badly. At least not so far.
What I was trying to do was to have a "spare" computer with Workbench along with the regular/current MX available at turn-on. I also have the latest Workbench on USB, should that be needed to help someone. I just like the convenience of having the tools installed, versus booting the USB every time I get curious about what a particular tool does on the Aspire One. I'm still in the exploring MX/Linux phase (probably for the rest of my computer-using life), but don't have 24/7 to "play".
After running the github script/install I was wondering about the Workbench Tools Launcher so I can run the tools more easily, that's what I was after. If I didn't explain something clearly enough, just let me know.
Thanks for all you do for all the users,
Phil (in NY)

Yeah, the launcher is the "custom-toolbox"
https://github.com/MX-Linux/custom-toolbox
And the settings are the ones in
https://github.com/AdrianTM/workbench-d ... tools.list you need to save this file in /etc/custom-toolbox/ and also use a .desktop file to launch it
https://github.com/AdrianTM/workbench-d ... ls.desktop
Notice that I call custom-toolbox like this "custom-toolbox /etc/custom-toolbox/workbench-tools.list" so it loads that particular list you could dump the content in the default .list which is /etc/custom-toolbox/custom-toolbox.conf so you could call "custom-toolbox" directly.

Sure thing, also, if you have any question about "custom-toolbar" or suggestion please let me know. It's a rather simple tool that you can use to build collection of tools like "MX Tools" but it can be anything, games, sysadmin tools, and so on, you can create a number of .list file and with the same tool you can used different .desktop files to call those lists directly. The format in .list is shown in example.list and in Help.

I posted a 18.8 version
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-lin ... y_Respins/
Use the zsync-respins.sh to get the ISOs it will save you a lot of time and bandwidth if you have an older ISO.
Changelog:
- updated 174 packages
- added attr, rename, mx-boot-options packages
- removed grub-customizer (as discussed in this thread it's actually meant for running on installed system not on live environment but it can be made to work, if you want it "apt-get install grub-customizer"
- set "linssid root" I think this should fix the problem reported before
If you use the old ISO you don't really need to download the new ones, you can do an apt-get update and upgrade and then remaster.

Tried, did not work. Error.
Code: Select all
Executing zsync command
failed on url https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-linux/files/Snapshots/Community_Respins/download_MX-Workbench-18.8_x64.iso.zsync
could not read control file from URL http://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-linux/files/Snapshots/Community_Respins/download_MX-Workbench-18.8_x64.iso.zsync

OK, give me a moment to fix the script.
EDIT: I think you took the "download_filename.iso" too literally. The command should look like this:
Code: Select all
./zsync-respins.sh MX-Workbench-18.8_386.iso MX-Workbench-18.8_x64.iso
or:
Code: Select all
./zsync-respins.sh MX-Workbench-18.8_386.iso
The last one tries to find another MX*386.iso file in the current folder to use as an input file.

I'll have to give that a shot.
I just downloaded the 386-ISO for general use.
Thanks.

I just heard of this this week on reddit, and I just tried it to clone a drive. Twice, clonezilla began cloning the drive, but as a partition began to be worked on MX would mount it, and that broke clonezilla.

Disable autmounting. It easy in Xfce. You can also do that from console. Save that setting as persistent or remaster.
Thunar -> Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced: uncheck Enable volume management.
or CLI (you need xconf installed):
Code: Select all
xfconf-query --channel thunar-volman --property /automount-drives/enabled --set false

Ok, thank you. I'm on a dvd with it now, so I'll have to do it each time, as I don't know how to remaster as yet.

You can take a snasphot, it's easy, but you need to change a file manually: /etc/skel/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/thunar-volman.xml change
Code: Select all
<property name="automount-drives" type="empty">
<property name="enabled" type="bool" value="true"/>
to:
Code: Select all
<property name="automount-drives" type="empty">
<property name="enabled" type="bool" value="false"/>
And then start MX Snapshot and take a snapshot. Or use Live USB Maker to clone the live system to a USB flashdrive.

Ok, thanks again. That sounds very easy.

BTW, GSmartControl is up to v. 1.16 now (not in our repo), and there are very significant improvements, including the ability to test drives on USB connections.

Uploaded 19.3 version of Workbench here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-lin ... y_Respins/
No major changes, mostly upgrade to latest MX 18.1 kernel and packages. If you have the old ISO use rsync to get the new one it should save you a lot of bandwidth. There's a zsync-respins.sh script in that folder that should help.

Please suggest other tools to include, this is only a first iteration, we can include more useful tools.
can we have all of these tools in AntiX?

Yes of course, you are free to update antiX and install these tools and take a snapshot.

Adrian, I’ve been meaning to ask... will you be migrating the toolbox app over to MX-19?
It’s a very useful tool!

Yes, of course, is it not in the repos? You should be able to install it from here:

Thanks! Nope, couldn’t find it in the MX-19 repos. I was just going to wait a bit because I figured it would make it there sooner or later.
