when I looked there, there was a gigantic mass of \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ signs there, never seen such thing before
my file is 8 MB big because of this, I'm adding it in attachment as zip file

hello fehlix
i put the file together without the slashes. it smooths some things running it that way now. tony37 i removed the slashes. and chance it is better.

this is a fragment cut. not put in. where does it fit? does it go in?

Yes, those "\\\0" zero are written by plasma. I think I found a way to convince plasma to avoid writing those escaped zeros.
That happens when chainging auto/shown/hidden for MX Updater within the systray-config. So best for now don't touch those settings.

I can run the MX Updater and it will appear. I logged out and logged back in, after 20 minutes did not re-appear.

Like I said, not a major issue for me but it might be an issue for those that depend on this wonderful tool.

ETA: I looked at the KDE autostart list and it's there, but unchecked/disabled.
What is your Plasma Systray setting for the displaying of apt-notifier (under tab 2)? Is it set at "auto" or "always" or "hidden"? It should be at "always". "Auto" will keep the icon hidden until there are updates available.
So sorry for the delay getting back to you. This is the first day I've had power since the hurricane/TS hit my area.

I've effected no changes to my system since the above posting and this morning, after the machine having been booted for less then 8 minutes, the apt_notifier is showing in the systray. I have no explanation.

OK, pushed the fix for stopping plasma writing zero-terminated entries.

Very good, because meanwhile my file has grown to 128 MB of \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\. And I didn't change any settings, just opened apt-notifier to do some updates but plasmashell was hanging very badly and I had to restart it.

Hello everyone
I may be a trailing zero.
hello \\\\0,
hello \\\\0,
hello \\\\0,
Checking the slashed file After the upgrade. Now no slashes. With wireframe empty.
diffout.png
Next trial when becomes wireframe filled.
Having added toolbar launchers on this machine that got slashes. it had all upgrades.
The other kde machine has not shown slashes. Now wireframe empty, it skipped an upgrade (?)(when this doubt popped up.) As default, it had zero changes to toolbar or anything else.

Not really sure I understand completely. The latest MX Updater/apt-notifier update shall reduce the possibility to have trailing slashed zeros within the config file related to the systray shownItems. Well - sure - we might have overlooked something, but any reports about some findings are welcome.

Hello fehlix
wireframe filled condition now for trial.
Cannot squeeze a slash out of it.
Your reduction, suppression of slashes, diminished to none. found none.
Wonderful upgrade if it did, undid slashes.
