An excellent way of putting it.

I used to say I used the Gestalt way. Lots of different information and I try and connect the pieces. Occasionally I actually do.
Mine is "Total Immersion". Immersed in what is best left to the imagination.

I call my method "blundering." I just keep blundering until something works.-)

Yup. Know that one well. Maybe there should be a 'blundering moments' thread just for giggles!

I've tried a lot of xfce systems but this mx14 is the only one that has acer 23" monitor that keeps the 1920x1080 setting.all others after updates change.john

Just wanted to share that I have been running the system now pretty much all the time, and it runs like a charm! Even scanning works, which is normally on my system one of the harder things. The learning curve was more like a speedbump in the road than a curve. Googling helps with a LOT of things.

The only thing I miss is virtualbox (doesn't seem to be fully there?) and a few other minor things, like launch feedback (for those new I'd put this in, noobs like me like to see something happen when they start an application), putting a web hosted image on the desktop that refreshes after a few minutes (picture frame in kde can do that), and have a moonphase screenlet (like kmoon). Tried for a day on the two latter ones to find something that worked but nope.

Just booted the system and there is something in the syslog that appears very time, minor, but I figured I'd put it here:

Code: Select all

Feb 13 08:48:55 eadwinemx14beta2 kernel: [ 72.958310] apt-notifier.py[3380]: segfault at 4 ip b5b5a660 sp bf84aad0 error 4 in libQtCore.so.4.8.2[b5af2000+2dd000]

Also when I print something this happens (the print looks fine though):

Code: Select all

Feb 13 09:18:59 eadwinemx14beta2 hpcups[13171]: prnt/hpcups/Lidil.cpp 586: CupeInteger1 = [1]
Feb 13 09:18:59 eadwinemx14beta2 hpcups[13171]: prnt/hpcups/Lidil.cpp 587: CupeInteger2 = [0]
Feb 13 09:18:59 eadwinemx14beta2 hpcups[13171]: prnt/hpcups/Lidil.cpp 588: PrintMode Index = [4]
Feb 13 09:18:59 eadwinemx14beta2 hpcups[13171]: prnt/hpcups/Lidil.cpp 600: Print Mode = [PlainNormalColor]
Feb 13 09:18:59 eadwinemx14beta2 kernel: [ 1879.487458] usblp0: removed
Feb 13 09:18:59 eadwinemx14beta2 kernel: [ 1879.489319] Did not find alt setting 1 for intf 0, config 1
Feb 13 09:19:29 eadwinemx14beta2 kernel: [ 1909.082914] Did not find alt setting 1 for intf 0, config 1
Feb 13 09:19:31 eadwinemx14beta2 kernel: [ 1911.087498] Did not find alt setting 1 for intf 0, config 1
Feb 13 09:19:33 eadwinemx14beta2 kernel: [ 1913.091198] Did not find alt setting 1 for intf 0, config 1
Feb 13 09:19:35 eadwinemx14beta2 kernel: [ 1915.094855] Did not find alt setting 1 for intf 0, config 1
Feb 13 09:19:37 eadwinemx14beta2 kernel: [ 1917.098494] Did not find alt setting 1 for intf 0, config 1

Should I open a separate thread for the printing and apt notifier?

Anyway, just wanted to share my satisfaction on this new MX14, it is well on its way to becoming my new main system!

Did you install from Synaptic? If so, it advises that you must also install virtualbox-dkms or virtualbox-source. In order to have a GUI, you must also install virtualbox-qt.

After that, it appears to run OK, although I haven't tested much.

Perhaps this would be a good candidate for an addition to the meta-package installer?

Chris

I did not install at all. I cannot find the virtualbox-4.2 package (I would like to put my vdi or whatever that thing is called again back) and I have no clue what I need to install

One more issue, which is a little annoying: I use Chrome (not Chromium!) and in M12b2 I could set in window behavior focus stealing prevention on high, so when I click a link in my email program or RSS feed (to read later when done in Akregator) the Chrome browser would not steal focus.

I have set it up in the settings od MX14b2 to turn the stealing focus prevention on, but that is not enough for Chrome to steal focus still.

Any ideas?
