I can't even get vlc to play a video. It opens the video then immediately shuts down. In the console it says

Also I tried opening guvcview to see if it might play the video and it doesn't run. In a console I get

I think guvcview was preinstalled by default, or at least I don't recall having installed it and it's not in my apt history, but it seems to depend on jack also being installed, which isn't (and I'm not going to install jack on my system.) Plus it didn't create the directory structure that it needs. $HOME/.config/guvcview2 is there but no video0 subdirectory. I manually created it which makes the first line of the terminal error messages go away but I still get the rest of them:

Edit: I booted back into 18.3 and ran it and it works. It seems to just be a webcam app though, not a video viewer like I thought. 18.3 has version 2.04, 19b3 has 2.06.

@JayM

looking at your quick-system-info/inxi output above, I don't think you're nvidia drivers are installed all the way.

maybe i need another pot of coffee - but did i read you right that if one installs the rc version it will be updateable to the stable final release version without having to do a complete new install? i had been wondering about that?

I've done some more testing of "virgin" and "snapshot" installs of 19b3 - mostly "auto install using entire disk. Logs are attached below.

3 more:
Found a bug in gparted
For each new install I did the following steps:
1) delete all existing partitions
2) device - create new partition table (msdos/gpt)
3) (optional) format whole disk to ntfs/ext4
4) reboot from USB LUMed with factory ISO or snapshot from a different X1 with working 19b3
and ... it would crap out every time
I then booted with EASEUS Partition Master boot USB and guess what - even though I deleted all partitions and created new partition table (but not formatted/unalloctaed) AND gparted was showing empty unallocated disk - the NTFS partition is still there!
The 8th iteration finally worked installing from factory ISO - but only after I deleted all partitions (i.e. the resilient NTFS) with EASEUS
The snapshot ISO install only worked once - when I installed over the working 19b2.1 (1st test)
I would also recommend disconnecting any external drives before installation - I accidentally "installed" on my external 1tb SSD with all my backups that was attached. The GUI minstall defaulted the target disk not to the internal NVMe, but to external SSD and b/c that field was highlighted in red I didn't notice and whacked a corrupted install on it and spent several hours restoring data with RLinux5_x64 (excellent GUI prog (R-disk) free edition for Linux
