HP Printer died, what do you use/recommend on MX?

Hi,

My printer (HP OfficeJet Pro 8610) died this week and we had a pretty good run... I've always bought HP because they were so well supported on Linux but I've read in many places that their quality has gone out the Window so I'm afraid to love again...

What are the good folks at the MX forum using in their home offices for printing? I'd like something plug and play if possible and any brand is fine as long as it's supported. I don't mind paying decent money for good value in hardware so cheap for the sake of cheap is not a requirement.

Small form is also fine, I don't really need a behemoth like the 8610 again..

If your wanting to stay with inkjet then personally I think the Epson EcoTank printers are fantastic AND they scan pretty well too. ( ET-2850 all the way up to the 5850, depending up on your use.)

If your after a laser.. the some of the brothers are very good.

My linux people on both of these are very happy. (Windows too ) . I personally have a canon workforce and a VERY old HP 2000, both are serious work horses.

I just got a HP SmartTank 7602. A little more money up front, but it uses the high capacity ink tank system, so the ink is a lot cheaper. (black is less than a penny per page).

I do almost all my printing to B&W laser printers. Cost per sheet for toner is less that 1¢ US. I currently have two. My Samsung M3320 is about 12 years old. My HP Laserjet 3055 is over 15 years old. Both are trouble-free and the HP 3055 is uber compatible. Almost any PCL or PS driver will work. Toner cost for the older HPs are extremely low. My cost for that printer is more like 1/4¢ US per sheet. I use it the most.

The cost of supplies for any color inkjet printer will be higher. In the past I've had horrible reliability with multiple Epson inkjet printers. A year ago, I inherited my dad's HP OfficeJetPro 6970. I decided to keep it since I didn't have a color printer. It's reliable but costly to feed ink. It's more of a novelty that I seldom use.

Your mileage may vary.

I to have a black and white Laser Printer as well. The toner last me 3 years easy and the cartridge only cost me $40. I have a Samsung Xpress M2070FW, You get the Linux drivers off their site, a simple script to run. As for color, I go to my local drug store. They have a self-services color printer. All you do bring in you USB stick, flash card press a few button and you'll have your color print. Cheaper than owning a color printer if you don't print many color prints, which I don't.

For me, it's a Black/White Brother wireless multifunction laser printer [print/scan/fax].

Always check the specs of the Brother model in question, since most but not all their machines have Linux drivers/support.

I have been using Brother MFCs since around 2009 on Linux, but you do need to know the quirks, as in, sometimes the driverless detection in certain distros appear to work -- it can see the printer/scanner on your system -- but the URI location the detector finds [or maybe the address format it uses] doesn't actually get the printer working. I tend to have to set the location manually, since I have a fixed home network address for my printer.

Thankfully I always know that if the driverless entry does not work, Brother's own driver that you can download from the page for your particular model will indeed work once you set up the URI location correctly. Plus, for their B/W laser/LED printers, even if you don't install Brother's drivers, I believe the generic "PCL Laser Printer" driver found in the Printer Config's preinstalled list of drivers works just fine.

With the Brother app for smartphones, anyone in my household on the network can print and scan wirelessly from their mobile devices as well.

My previous Brother MFC was a colour LED printer, but I realised it wasn't worth having to buy refills for the 3 other colour cartridges apart from the black one.

I have one of these:
https://www.staples.ca/products/2984889 ... QaEALw_wcB
That I bought in 2020 and it's plug and play with MX. It comes with enough toner pre-installed for 5000 page impressions. The only downside is that it is noisy.

Thanks all for your input! I've never had a Laser printer... hmmmm

99% of my printing is for business books I don't really need color or photo printing, often they fade or degrade anyway..

If you don't need colour printing, a monochrome laser is the way to go because toner is cheaper, doesn't dry out or clog.

I have been using a Samsung laser printer for quite awhile now. My latest printer is several years old and very relaible. The only problem I had was that some Linux Distros did not have my printer driver when setting up the printer. There is package in Synaptic Package Manager caleed " Splix ". This is for Samsung printers. I just install that package, go into Printers and it has my required driver. Other than that, my Samsung laser printer has been my friend.

A LOT of people buying HP printers came into my store saying they wanted that brand. Highest price for hardware and supplies also the highest price per print. Post Covid it got even worse (compared to other brands). Many are offered with a locked-in subscription that you can opt out of in the first few months provided you do so via the HP (Windows) software app. HP also charges a premium for supplies as their printers age.

In terms of Laser printers, both HP and Canon use a captive to the print cartridge annealing assembly (read - extra cost). Brother offers a separate drum assembly, reducing this cost considerably (25% - 45%) per toner refill. My Brother drum in my HL-2380DW is rated at 13,000 prints with about 1,300 prints per toner cartridge.

A half truth was said about Epson earlier in this thread. Their Ink Tank printers (thousands of prints from a $15 USD a black bottle) are VERY reliable. They also have several models that use those tiny color & black cartridges that do nothing but drive up your per print costs. These are their reputation killers, pure junk with most not lasting beyond 2 years and many conking out under warranty.

HP 02 inkjet ink cost over $100 USD in 2022 for 3 colors and black for 500 prints. For $50 USD a full set of ink bottles for an Epson Inktank was under $50 USD for 3,000 to 4,000 prints!

All of the above is my personal opinion based on when I worked in retail office supplies (2014-2022). On several months in my store we sold >800 printers. We also took in e-waste for free, so I got to see a lot of failed printers. We carried ALL of the six major brands, not just unknowns.

If a printer supports driverless printing then it is almost a no brainer.

So if I follow you're leaning toward Brother for laser and Epson (tank models) for Inkjet? I did some Googling and it seems Brother provides Linux downloads of their drivers and apps. Is that drum assembly in the Brother lasers a User-replaceable part?

Getting lots of good recommendations, thanks folks!

Yes, the Brother drum is a user-replaceable part. Same access door as the toner snaps into the drum frame.

We have a Canon MG3600 series printer/scanner. Wireless or USB connection. Had it for a couple of years. About $50 depending on where you buy it. The ink cartridges are relatively cheap from Amazon. We don't do a lot of printing. Never had a problem with it.

I have been using an older Brother model (MFC-L2700DW series) black and white laser printer that I bought used a few years back, for less than $100. No problems for years (on all 3 main MX distros-- Fluxbox, Xfce & KDE).

To your point, yes, I was able to download (from the Brother website) the .deb package for the drivers for this model, even though I can use the printer without the drivers (a la post from d.o.).

To your other point, I have replaced the Toner cartridge, which I purchased online (either Amazon or Aliexpress). I have also purchased the Drum cartridge for this older model. As long as someone is selling these cartridges for this older model, I can keep using it with MX-Linux :exclamation:

I have also set it up successfully as a Network printer, connected from the basement to my upstairs router. No Problems :exclamation: Although, it did take some tweaking to set it up from on the user panel of the printer (finding the correct menu settings for getting the URI, & managing through CUPS).

Good Luck! :crossfingers:

You will need to check the webpage for the specific Brother model you are looking at, to confirm that the model is compatible with Linux.

IF [note the IF] the model can run on Linux, then you will find the download link for the corresponding Linux driver in the webpage for that model. If you can't find any such driver in the download section/tab of that model's webpage, then there is no guarantee it will work with Linux.

Even that's not necessarily complete. I have a Brother HL-5470DW I'm happily using with MX-23 that I don't see listed on that site.

Of course it's not complete. Manufacturers keep spinning out new printer models as fast as people will buy them. Open Printing site is the most authoritative single place on the web, so if you want it to be more complete, contribute what you know to it. That's how open source works.

The HL-5470DW has been discontinued for some years.

Probably best to check to check with the Brother webpage, as suggested above where that model is indeed listed, though I doubt the OP will be getting a model that's been discontinued that long.

That is good to know. I guess I'm behind the times also.

I'm not ready for driverless cars, but I'd definitely consider a driverless printer. One step at a time, I guess.

For anyone who may care,

I ended up going a bit above and beyond my original plan because I've decided to add services for small run CD duplication and graphic design to the Studio (believe it or not there is still some demand). Some people aren't happy with producing an album and not having something in their hands to show for it, streaming is wonderful in some ways and vinyl is prohibitively expensive and CDs are having a bit of a renaissance which will most likely be short lived I realize. In the meantime for my own 'real job' needs and for the part-time Studio customers I figured a good color laser printer probably wouldn't be a bad way to go so we got a Brother MFC-L3720. I installed the Linux Printer and Scanner Drivers from the Brother site and everything works perfectly and the print quality is really excellent compared to the 8610 inkjet printer it replaced. It will remain to be seen how long the Toner lasts and how it pencils out per sheet I guess..

Thanks all for the answers and advice, a great community here!

Nice, good luck with the CD duplication. I don't like not having something "in my hands" and depending only on stream [I don't even have a spotify account], but for me FLAC files of an album are good enough. I've been buying a few albums that way from Bandcamp.

Maybe this URI location is my current problem.

I have been using a Brother MFC-8460N monochrome laser for about 18 years now, and it's been a workhorse. However, over time it has started printing more and more error messages such as "Memory full" or some kind of "Command stack" message. It can print pages of text only just fine, seems to have trouble with images, even some small logos give trouble. (Would a memory upgrade help with this? It has an empty memory slot.)

So I thought maybe it's time to get a newer printer that can handle more complicated graphics. Found a used Brother HL-L2390DW locally, and for the life of me I cannot get it to print. I have tried installing via the Brother install utility that is supposed to install all three drivers at once and I have tried doing it driverlessly, both multiple times. The MFC always had a .ppd that was super simple to install, but there is no .ppd available for this printer. It just keeps saying "Processing - Waiting for printer to become available." I'm connecting with a USB, and have tried a different cable and different USB ports to no avail.

Image

So maybe I need to change the device URI, but I need help figuring out what that would be.

Here's the output of lpstat -t if that helps:

Code: Select all

scheduler is running
no system default destination
device for HLL2390DW: usb://dev/usb/lp0
HLL2390DW accepting requests since Sat 15 Mar 2025 03:43:46 PM

HLL2390DW-1204 root 1024 Sat 15 Mar 2025 03:43:46 PM
Any help much appreciated!

I have no experience with Brother USB-only printers. For those with network capabilities, even if you have the correct driver installed, you may still have to set a fixed URI address for the printer.

BUT!

in order to do that, you may first have to fiddle with your router for your home network, to assign/reserve a fixed home network address for your printer. Once you have done that, you can set your Brother printer to this fixed address, from the console screen of your printer.

Then, in MX, you configure your printer driver [the configure printer window] to point to this URI.

Correct :exclamation:

That is what I had to do for correctly setting-up my Brother printer as a Network Printer. It resides in my basement, and is connected to power and an Ethernet cable that connects to my router.

I recall having to fiddle quite a bit with the printer's menu settings until I found the correct setting to change the URI.

I will review my notes (which I always try to take, especially for stuff like this), and will get back to you (the person who had problems with changing the URI).

@reidun So, I didn't see that your question regards a USB connection.

I found my notes for setting-up a Brother Network Printer, so that doesn't really address your question, but I will upload my notes for anyone who is interested. I have altered my notes to remove personal information (IP addresses & such), and have tried to make it general for anyone. It gets a bit complicated between configuring your own router, CUPS, and the device/printer itself. So, here you go:

Yes, that is what I meant in my first post when I said I used the Brother utility that installs all three drivers at once. Doesn't print. (BTW, they still provide a driver for my old MFC-8460N which is about 18 years old.)

It does print test pages from the printer console menu, so I don't think that's the problem. It also has a total page printed count of under 700 pages.

Going to give the above tips a shot now and see if I can get any headway.

Problem solved! No amount of anything I tried would result in anything but the message "Waiting for printer to become available" so I finally thought to fire up the windows partition and see if it would recognise the printer from the offical Windows printer installation tool, which it did not. So, looked at the actual USB port on the machine, and terminals were bent. (Why does it take loads of frustration to think to look at the obvious easy thing?) So my husband took it apart and removed the broken port from the circuit board and resoldered a port of an old Brother printer we had sitting around for part. Works like a charm with the Linux installation tool provided straight from Brother!

Jump to the end.. consider for Printing. Unless you are a photographer and or house full of kids with school projects and Printing color is a nice feature to allow them to learn and create value to home work assignments.

if you are simply one to print and black and white is all the same to okay. Deeply consider the headache to the Scam of color IC-chip integrated cartridge scams usage and buy the program to replace. even some of these 3rd party Color Tank systems
great way to maybe get use, yet create an easy way to Brick your printer. Consider a standard Laser Desktop Printer and or Work-duty printer.. Currently using a Brother DCP-L2450-DW workstation like printer scans copies prints.
Linux Install 1st obtained running Mint years ago no problem, MX easy to install and run the common Brother Drivers installed via DPKG -i or Thunar find the file.deb and click to install.

now old and out dated. I have a 2nd cartridge in it. Laser uses a powder ink and heat ignites ink to print. So far never has "Dried Out" heads do not clog or fill to crusty ends. And cost of 1 cartridge out lasts the 3 or 4 or 5 one would have to replace
all at the same time per Color printing units. ( this has over time been customer cry out to scams by all manufacturers. ). per their construct to color cartridge printers.
Food for thought. Document printing with laser is quality perfect click print now or 8 months away.
Retired now I rare to print less test and use the paper for desktop scratch. If you are employed and working hard and a printer is must. Consider browsing Best printer and practice for devices available best suited for your needs. then I'd share Charles suggest for a color unit shared is a good unit. Epson by some are considered better than most. I've had 3 all Epson color in past and all are well awaiting disassembly. for maybe re-use of electronics and or parts.

I think it might help if the OP was marked as thread author on each post the OP makes, like I've seen on other forums, because you do lose track after a few pages, especially as the thread changes directions (like I'm doing now :)).

Is it better to start a new thread, or add on to a thread that is relevant to the issue, like I did here?

Typically we prefer a new topic for a new person as hardware is usually different, software load etc etc.

Always start a new thread. While the issue at hand may seem the same, some or all of your equipment is bound to be different.

Good to know, I will do that in the future. I wasn't sure if it would unnecessarily clutter up the forum, but different hardware makes sense. Thanks for everyone's help!
