Just right click on the downloaded .deb file (assuming the file manager is Thunar) : "Install Deb Files".
The download file is this when you search the model and proceed:
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr_1.8.6-1_amd64.deb
from:
https://download3.ebz.epson.net/dsc/f/0 ... _amd64.deb

I'm going to throw a monkey wrench into this thread. Do you absolutely need to print in colour? If your honest answer is no, your cost per printed page will be much lower if you instead purchase a monochrome laser printer.

that's exactly what I did here. Plus, I do not print very often, but when I need a print, I do not want to hassle to get the nozzles clean again and hope the ink has not dried out.
Right now, I have a Lexmark B2338dw connected via LAN to my network, and MX pretty much integrated it automatically, and even the duplex print works as it should.

You shouldn't need to hunt down and download any Epson drivers, our ISO's come preloaded with printer-driver-escpr which has the Epson printer drivers built in !
Please people, before you mindlessly mash out un-researched advice that includes out-of tree drivers and packages, do some research on what we provide on the ISO !
When the OP has not provided the required QSI to effect a response targeted to their particular version, our only option is to respond from the position of our Flagship product, however, all 3 of our supported ISO's, Xfce, KDE and Fluxbox come with Epson Printer support OOTB.
A quick and easy check from the terminal of a Live ISO running in a VM
Code: Select all
$ apt policy printer-driver-escpr

sorry been outside working all day yesterday - fixing a chainsaw and felling trees and moving wood with the tractor.
My wife does need to print color from time to time for her job. for our needs a more epxensive printer was not necessary.
mpav - Thank you for the info. i had no clue due to my lack og knowledge how to locate the info you provided. In additiom, in the past i had a few issuest rying to install stuff on linux so i asked. after decaes using linux i am still a neophyte re: technical linux knowhow!
hopefully when we get the printer in all will load up and work nicely!
Thank you!

sorry about the QSI - since there are a couple of thonkpads involved i figured it would be too crazy to include them. plus i wasn;t thinking about the QSI at the time either. my fault.
the reason for the original post question is that we have been using the HP 8600 since we switched to mx at the end of the mx17 cycle. so i only did the HPLIP stuff - with a few issues with the one laptop. so going to a new printer i was questioning getting it to work with minimal glitches. I figured that MX was so comprehensive that maybe the epson was included.

The printer-driver-escpr package will not include all printer models and often the newer ones may take some time before they appear in an updated version of this package. Sometimes the latest models will need a specific driver download from the manufacturer, and that goes for all printer makes, not just Epson.
That said, the path forward for wireless printing is being pushed towards driverless printing which does not always play nice with Debian Stable and older printer models. Driverless printing is handled by the AHAVI Daemon and I usually disable it because it never gets it right with my 3 printers. Disabling the AHAVI service has the effect of requiring root (sudo) access to use the scanners on AIO printer models, but that's something I can live with. That said, for some, the driverless printing works perfectly.
I recommend setting up all WiFi enabled printers to use a static IP Address both in the printer controls and in the household or common DHCP router. When pinned at the router, this avoids things like Mobile phones that come and go frequently from being assigned an IP Address that a printer had but lost due to its going into a deep sleep state and the lease timing out.
Most routers will have something like a 12 or 24 hour lease cycle, some are factory set at 5 minutes, as are the ones I use at home. While all will benefit from pinning IP Addresses, its the short lease types that you'll find will benefit most from having certain devices IP Addressed pinned to that device only. It takes some work to get it done in the first instance, but the reliability thereafter will pay back in dividends, even for routers with a 24 hour lease cycle.

wow! thank you - a bit over my head and many rereads to try to understand this - but i DO appreciate the info once again. when it comes in hopefully this week let me see how easy or difficult it is to set stuff up according to their instructions and then go from there. probably will have a few more follow-up questions.

Do not follow Epsons instructions for OS installation, they're written for Windows and Apple users.
If you can use the printers built in control panel to get your printer connected to your WiFi, that may be all you need to do because it is likely designed to support driver-less printing which is supported by the AHAVI deamon (service).
After you have your printer connected to your network, simply open the Printers app in your MX Linux system and if you see your printer in there, check the paper size to ensure it matches what you put in it then try a test print. If it works, you've done all that you need to do for printing.

thanks - that is what i was going to try to do; and then see what happens. a compliment to MX and all of the DEVS - since i moved over to MX in the MX17 days I generally do not have any issues with many things - it all works seamlessly as such! one hell of a comprehensive OS for sure!

+1 on m_pav said .. .I *just* installed two laptops in a house that has 2 et-2850 printers, and all I did differently was to set the IP's to static, so they stayed at a certain ip setting and didnt move around.
MX 23.4 found them and printed perfectly, and then I used NAPS2 to create scanner profiles to them and they were scanning.
Nice printer and just work!

wow thank you Charles. what timing. they also just sent it out today so it should be here tomorrow afternoon. so you just set static as setting and it found the IP address or you had to find it and put it in. Also what is NAPS2 - and where did you get that from? was that in MX too? hopefully with your help and mpavs i should get this going. need to do 3 thinpads and my wife's department macbook that she uses for her job. i am glad you posted this success. thank you!

I created the static IP. (I set dhcp in their router to start at .101 and go to .250). Then I set the printers to .21 and .22 ( my "printer settings") and then did an add printer and it found them automatically.)
For NAPS2 ... download and install from here:
https://www.naps2.com/
The install is painless, and works! ( you MAY need to also install xsane from MX Package Installer ) . Naps2 works in two protocols twain ( use this! ) and then ESCL. (You wont need ESCL for your use, but printers that are USB connected only .. this provides sharing !)

So, in order to not have an issue, you need to make sure that your using an IP for your printer that your router wont 'hand out' on a lease. Most home home routers start use dhcp starting at .2 and go to .254 ( 192.168.1.1 is the router, and they hand out IP addresses starting at 192.168.1.2 and go all the way up.)
Normally, when I setup a router, I set the dhcp to start at .101 and go to 250. ( That provides for 149 IP's and nothing I use ( except for hotels), uses that many addresses. )
Then in my 'static IPs' I setup the following schemes :
.15 is the router (II *never* use .1 ,, as 192.168.1.1 is a 'default ip' for many devices and can cause you trouble.)
.16 ~ .19 are WiFi Ap's
.21 is the first printer and all .21-.29 are printers
.31 is the first storage device ( .31-.39 )
.51 are cameras ( .50 is the NVR and .51-69 are cams )
There are some deviations on these, but this is an IP scheme I use. If you are going to use Static IP's .. you should make sure they are safe, and map them so that you KNOW. NO guess work !

whoa! that is a brain full. i will try to set it up when it comes later today, or this evening according to fedex... I will see how my generic setup and knowledge will work.
When I first started trying to use linux many decades ago, the biggest issues i had was wireless and printer/scanner issues. hence my trepidation setting up a new manufacturers printer/scanner.

Most people will do just fine with connecting the printer to the wifi, and then letting the print system find it. I usually get called when the printer has changed IP's (because of the router), and then it 'does work' .. usually... restarting both printer and computer resolves it... but once i have two calls to the same place about a printer... then I set them static.

You can let your printer grab an open IP and then you can "reserve" that IP for the printer where DHCP will simply hand the same IP to the printer when it requests a lease renewal. This is another trick you can use as well and it's pseudo-static.

Those inktank bottles can get messy if you are not careful handling them so be careful as the ink stains clothing or whatever it's spilled on!

Good call on this - if / when that works. I have had several home routers that wont 'pin' a mac to an IP. If his does, that is a simple way to do that.

That's correct. Some but not all routers/cable gateways have that feature to reserve the IP that DHCP gives a newly installed and discovered device. Some routers may have a button or link next to the IP of the device in the device listing page to mark it reserved.

well good news and not so good. first the bad. the tiny screen that is like 1" x 2" is impossible to see with bad eyes like mine and my wife's is even worse - so i will hear the BS when she gets home. the setup was a bit confusing and bit hard to follow from the screen choices but once i tried a few things and also figured out how to enter info it was OK. found the wireless and i also installed the naps stuff. it all works. not sure the printer is quite setup - and yes i went through the stuff could not back out of a screen to see if i missed a setup item.
with the HP you had to be hardwired to an internet signal via usb to enter their HP IP address setup scenarios. and for some reason the printer was always hard wired. this epson is not. hp you could print from latops wirelessly but the actual printer had an rj45 connector. so go figure. so thank you to MPAV and Charles for their help. unless i end up with some weird time out or lease end issue ---- hopefully this worked. a lighter printer compared to the door stopper the HP is. the print and the print scan seems nice. clean and clear. So THank you all!

Glad to hear you have it working. And yes, those little LED screens are horribly small! There are two things I can think of for that one!
First, if you have a large magnifying glass 9like for a book ) that might help.
Second, there was an instruction I saw that said something about connecting with an AP on your phone. THAT might help you see instead of that small screen. As I recall, you just scanned the QR code to get the app, then put in your serial number maybe... and then it was all done by the ap.
If you have trouble with it, I would suggest that ap to work with it. (There is an html config too, but you have to know the printer the IP has... so unless you can get that off the network print out... ;-/

i never used cell phones or smart phones - so that was not an option. when i saw that QR code i tried to get past that maybe 2-3x before i figured out a way to. so thank you. does the naps2 wor better than the scanner app included in MX? or what? Just curious why you mentioned that one... driver related maybe?

For most people, there are really only two types of scans. Image and PDF .
Image scans are best done with GIMP ( in my opinion ) , and then
PDF scans - which I personally think NAPS2 is BY FAR anything I have seen in linux for scanning to PDF's.

OK - just so you now and without doing a QSI for each laptop - yet all three running updatded/latest MX. the newest ooffice carbon seems to have had printer-driver-escpr installed but i installed again anyway and it printed out. the daily beater/work 220 thinkpad was the one i had issues with today. that was missing and i installed it. printed out but the printer settings does not pop up in the panel. not sure what that is. the oldest and slowest streaming 201 thinkpad also did not have but i installed it and did not try it yet.
i will check again later today with a test page and tomorrow too - hopefully that install rectified the problem.

K.. I am going to say that the issue is NOT the printer to wifi , but Cups to printer. (from the sound of it. )
Try this:
go to Print Settings in the MX Menu, then ,
1) remove all printers that you no longer have.
2) Remove the new printer.
reboot
Go back to Print Settings and then
3) Add Printer
___Click on Network Printer, then
_____ Click on Find Network Printer.
you SHOULD see the ET-2850 ( or 2800 show up in the list)
Choose that, and when you get to a point where it shows you the driver to use (Or asks which one) Look carefully at the printer driver. One will be the cups 'default' and one will be the cups "epson" . Choose the LATEST driver version and try it.
if that fails, then go back to properties on the printer after your test and choose the OTHER driver. For the ET-2850's I just installed, it was the latest driver ( ie highest version number )

ok tried this many times with same cups server error. and i could never delete the printer because a discovered one would pop up. rebooted multiple times and tried a few things and stuff i did previously too and somehow it wored for 2 pages this time. i am not dumb - trust me.... i have Ph.D.; but even after decades running linux - i am a numbn*ts re: more technical logistical linux stuff unlike 95% of the people here. what worked i know i had tried multiple times before. i am in a quandary.
also when it is on - the printer - and it socalled goes to sleep or semi off mode - by triggering a printout does it come back to life as such or do i have to run upstairs to turn this on again prior to sending a job to it?
i will try again later and again timorrow morning.

The ET's I have worked with all sleep and wake up when print job arrives - ie no on or of physically needed.
If the discovered one keeps popping up, then your printer IS being seen. Maybe just try to change the driver ? ( Properties, then make and model - and see if there is more than one version available for that printer. )
I dont have access the ET's atm, but I dont recall there being more than 2 drivers and one was obviously a higher driver number - that is what I chose and has worked.)

wow - i greatly appreciate all of your steady help here. i will try my office one too. see if that works or will have the same issues as this one. i will get back --- wish there were ways to make thread solved with multiple peoples help. because so far you and m_pav have paved the way as such.

addendum: i just tried the problem work laptop and it printed another page. went to my office and the thinkpad carbon printed no problems at all. I set them all up the same and for some reason the thinkpad 220 is an anomaly. weird for sure. i did not try the old 201 yet.
oh i have a 2nd printer called the same but it is not checked as default - it appears the working one set itself as default from what i see. is deleting ok for the unchecked one? i have in the past with the HP - and sometimes it seemed to appear out of nowhere. but hate to start messing this epson setting up. thanks again Charles!

That is likely the same printer shared via Samba. This can be turned off in the printer settings.
The intent was for one PC to have a printer 'connected' to it and then any local network users could take advantage of the shared printer. A workgroup type of thought.

allright but i believe i do not have samba enabled or even on the new MX even have it loaded. i think i chose not to since i never used it before, well i will keep it then.
like an old friend of mine used to say - if it's not broke then don't fix it; and if you can't fix it then don't break it!
it has helped me a lot over the years.
i will try these 2 laptops tomorrow morning. see if it is Good!

hopefully final post... i must have accidentally set the printer timer to other than the 'off' setting so i had to power it on - even though i sent a job to print. when i turned it on the job from the problem 220 laptop printed. I tried another print from my carbon and it printed. so hopefully it is setup. thanks to everyone!
added: tried the problematic laptop this afternoon and worked without a problem.

Update/Follow-up: so far we are pleased at this printer and the connection has not had any issues. print quality is nice. when i tried 1 scan as a trial - the resolution was ok but i did not tweak any aspects of the scan within the scan app so i believe if i tweaked the resolution or whatever else it would be better. so far, as i said, we are pleased in case anyone is considering this printer. the filling from bottles is pretty straightforward too. beats the HP BS we had before.
