I guess you mean:

dist-upgrade or full-upgrade (both work with aptitude)

Anyway, I don't think I'll ever know what really happened, but in any case, I totally agree with you:

A good backup strategy will recover from most anything that causes a problems.

EDIT:

Reflecting on what happened, I now believe that also a reinstallation is a solution, sometimes even more effective, convenient and quicker than looking for endless possibilities ... -- With this in mind I consider the matter solved.
