suspend battery drain

This is the start of a thread that I will populate as I get time. Basic problem: on a brand new development laptop I'm seeing 8-12% power loss per hour when the machine is suspended on battery. That's on the standard 6.5 kernel, and when I dropped to the 6.3 the rate reduced to 6%/hr in the one test I have run so far. Only a minimum loss when powered off of 1-2% over a 12h period.

The battery itself does not seem to be the culprit

Code: Select all

$ inxi -B
Battery:
  ID-1: BAT0 charge: 38.1 Wh (59.2%) condition: 64.4/65.3 Wh (98.6%)
    volts: 11.8 min: 11.6
I am wondering about whether light-locker may be involved, but have not pursued that yet. The suppliers have said that they have no trouble with Ubuntu on the 6.2 kernel, but don't know if that is relevant. For now, here is the machine; I'll be back this afternoon:

Maybe you also try (at least just to compare) with Liquorix 6.5 .

unless they modified the installation image, light-locker shouldnt' be installed.

maybe check into tlp and tlp's settings.

Yes, no light-locker on 23, there's the xfce4-screensaver ootb.

I, too would say tlp but then asked myself why is it better with 6.3, same settings, both tlp and the locker whichever it is ..

On my very close Starbook machine (6 cores instead of 12), light-locker was not pre-installed by Starlabs.
FWIW, instead of shutting down, I'll leave it on suspend tonight to see what happens.

--light-locker is installed by default and since there are reports of problems at times I wondered if I should remove it. xfce4-screensaver is there.

--looked at tlp using the handy tlpgui but wasn't exactly sure what was important...

--Found this a couple of places on the web, is it still valid? Mine does have s2idle as default:
I had discovered that the Linux Kernel post 5.4 defaults suspend to a hardware agnostic software suspend implementation called s2idle. This is guaranteed to work on all systems, but has the worst power efficiency. The default for devices used to be deep.

To see if your device can support deep suspend state run this command
cat /sys/power/mem_sleep

# Example output
[s2idle] deep
If you see that the selected default is s2idle, you need to add a kernel boot parameter to change the default back to deep.

You need to add this option

mem_sleep_default=deep

@Redacted That would be helpful, thanks.

Yep.

But before applying the boot parameter, you can test temporarily (and immediately) for this session:

Code: Select all

su

Code: Select all

echo deep > /sys/power/mem_sleep
Now check it again as you did then test the suspend :)

In the meantime it seems light-locker was added to 23.1 iso , cause it wasn't there on 23, the initial release ...

if light-locker is installed you should remove it.

looking at the build-iso package lists, it shouldn't be on our isos. going to check...

Till then: It's listed on Distrowatch's page:

well distrowatch didn't build it, I did. and light-locker is not on either the 64_bit AHS nor the standard 64 bit.

so if its on jerry's machine, then the vendor added it.

That may be. It was definitely on the system that came from StarLabs, since"which light-locker" reported the usual location. I am now working with a re-install (using our official 23.1 iso): that is not on my machine now and apt history does not show it being removed. But the conclusion seems clear: since it is no longer on my machine but the problem persists, it was not the cause.

My first test with the change to "deep" was not encouraging, but I'm not charging the machine back up and will make a long overnight test.

During the day, 4 different times I suspended for an hour, and each time the drain was 1-2%.
Then i remembered I had disabled webcam and wifi in bios, so I enabled both, then suspended for the night - lid closed.
10 hours later, the battery had dropped 50%.
Quite a change.

Since it happened with me only when I enabled wifi in bios, could it be that it's an issue with how Starlabs handles wifi? At least in MX?

Sheesh!
Here a few months ago I was touting how great the vendor and product was.
I feel a little embarrassed and irritated.
I'm hoping you get a decent response.

The vendor is great and do is the machine, with one exception. The open question is how just their support.

I wonder if unloading the webcam and wi-fi modules before a suspend makes any difference.

I have no idea, but I think that now with two separate machines having the identical problem that the solution goes over to StarLabs...

I'm happy to report that StarLabs is responding appropriately:
Hi Jerry,

I'm opening a support ticket to help track this one and we can focus on getting to the route cause.

:number1: That's so encouraging. These are good machines.
And thanks for your work!

Now have this message and, since it is not in the repos, could use some input from @dolphin_oracle on how to proceed:
I did see that your machine went out with the AMI firmware, whilst we are currently focusing greatly on coreboot, I'd recommend switching. coreboot is starting to exceed AMI in performance and power consumption alone. However, we can look at this on AMI, as it is likely to be kernel-related for power usage on suspend.
Download page is here: https://www.coreboot.org/downloads.html

... Just, on this opportunity: Where do the Distrowatch guys get the (wrong) info from ? Or.. don't they check / verify etc..?

This just shows that it's an untrustable site / source.

Switching bios programs as got to be in the machine settings somewhere. I don’t think you’ll find a package in the repo that will do that.

Here are the instructions for installing coreboot from Starlabs:
https://support.starlabs.systems/kb/gui ... g-coreboot
I tried it when using MX 21, but it did not work.
Certain prerequisites couldn't be met under MX.
To experiment, I installed Linux Mint, and coreboot installed successfully.
I don't know why. (I no longer have that machine).

edit the above link and its links to follow were instructions for downloading and switching branches under Debian 11

Thanks to both. Have to mull this one over...

I'd first see if the 6.5 Liquorix kernel has the same issue before the drastic BIOS replacement. I also think that whatever kernel Ubuntu is using successfully will work on MX, and Ubuntu's "linux-firmware" blob is ahead of ours by about six months again, so I'd try updating ours by getting the firmware tarball from the kernel git, extracting it, and running "sudo make install" in the extracted folder.

@Jerry3904 You may have decided to wait until Starlabs gets back with you.

But I'd like to try and help if possible. I'm doing what Stevo suggested. I installed the 6.5 Liquorix kernel today, and later today I'll put it into suspend for the night.

Thanks. We have been going back and forth since I last posted, and I tried the liquorix kernel but it made no difference for me.

The machine is so fast that I now have grub set not to appear and autologin on so it makes no difference to my workflow.

Sounds good. I never noticed a problem until I tested it because of your initial post.
They do load quickly, don't they!

It's a wonderful machine.
