Greetings to all,
I was curious about Mx and I'm trying it on a Dell E6410, core i5 64bit 8 giga of ram, MX21.3 on board, so far so good, I've been using it for 15 days, then an update arrives yesterday and firefox goes into crash, I reset firefox from troubleshooting, reinstalled TWP, web page translator, I'm Italian, installed ublock and autodele cookies as before and it often closes with an error message and relative log send crash to firefox, at this point not being a top in linux please what can be done to fix it
Looking forward to suggestions/advice, thanks.
Best regards to all here

Dear Edwin Rose In the meantime, thanks for answering me, and then I would like to clarify that I have been using mx 21.3 Wild Flower for about 2 weeks, and apart from some management differences from ubuntu mate which I used before, I have not had any problems, I switched to MX because I need many open firefox tabs and until yesterday I received updates never a problem, then I updated and from there the crashes were born ... Thanks in advance for the help ....
I forgot with this version of linux I had problems with the wifi card, it couldn't find my network, I had to change the wifi channel of the router from 13, set channel 3 and when I scan the wifi networks it puts channel 1 first despite the low signal and channel 2, my network with maximum signal only shows in 5th or 6th place, this is the only strange thing I found besides having to do two steps to save a screenshot..

I too am having issues with this latest version of FF on my MX19.4. I am tempted to uninstall it and reinstall the old version that was previous to this one. I realize it is not an MX issue but a Firefox one but now that I see I am not the only one, is there a fix or update in the works my fellow MXers?

I know I'm in the minority and wouldn't recommend this to others, but once I get Firefox and Thunderbird dialed in and configured just the way I what them, I lock them and don't update them until I'm forced to, which for me means until I update the OS (which is also something I don't do until I'm forced to).

@uncle mark You should add, "Children, please don't try this at home." Virtually all Firefox and Thunderbird updates have a huge number of security fixes. It's the nature of being out on the Internet. For example, here is a link to the current batch of fixes in 110.0:

Just tried it, and same here - frequent crashes. Librewolf (my default browser, based on Firefox and also just now upgraded to version 110) doesn't seem to have that problem, at least, I haven't come across any crashes so far. For this and a few other reasons, I recommend Librewolf over Firefox :-)

After updateing latest version of firefox 110.0, firefox is crashing, this problem is from firefox not with mx or librewolf

I am sure you are right. I just don't see more Firefox crashes than I normally do and that is pretty rarely.
Youtube Enhancer is the only add on I use so my Firefox install is pretty clean.

Do you have some specific links that can give you a crash every time or is it more random and periodically.?

figueroa wrote: Fri Feb 17, 2023 11:12 pm @uncle mark You should add, "Children, please don't try this at home." Virtually all Firefox and Thunderbird updates have a huge number of security fixes. It's the nature of being out on the Internet. For example, here is a link to the current batch of fixes in 110.0:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/ ... sa2023-05/
I know I know. That said, I would point out my Firefox isn't crashing, either.

Ok.. we know it crashes for a lot of folks. What do the firefox forums say?

Some talk about the passage to number 100 which would bug Firefox and Chrome on certain sites.

Information from a French site 01net.

Something weird is going on...because,
I had problems with previous version of Freecad
(in MX only but not in another distro running on the same hardware - see:https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=74047)
Since I have updated to this latest version things have been a lot better
I am not saying that what you boys and girls are reporting is not true, just reporting my experience.

Perhaps a comparison of your and my QSI (by someone more knowledgeable than myself) might give some clues?

How about starting "firefox" from a terminal and see if it throws up errors when it crashes?

Note that the graphics drivers on my x201 are the same as OP's and it is working fine.

On the firefox forums, people are talking about disabling hardware acceleration and also a new feature called 'GPU Sandboxing'. I looked into both of those settings but it didn't help.
I also tried forcing an older version in Synaptic manager for each of the other packages that were upgraded along with firefox but it shows version 2.36.... (the one prior was 2.38.4) and as such it wants to remove quite a lot of other packages which I don't want.

If anyone is desperate ( I only have one browser), I suggest you download FIREFOX-ESR from the repos for now.

EDIT: Note that over on the forums, people are saying that their youtube video playback is choppy. I didn't notice that on Firefox 110, however I did notice it on Firefox-ESR which is why I posted the info about what else was upgraded alongside Firefox 110 namely all the java and webkit stuff. Firefox-ESR does not have the new 'GPU Sandboxing' feature.
EDIT EDIT: I have a 3 rd laptop also running MX19.4 but it still has firefox 109.1 on it and is working fine. Firefox 109.1 has 'GPU Sandboxing' as well so I'm stumped now.

For what it's worth, I've been trying Firefox 110.0 in EndeavourOS and so far have experienced no crashes, including on pages which repeatedly crashed when running the browser in MX 21.3. Browser addons etc are identical in both systems. I have no idea what to make of this - just thought it worth reporting.

As Stevo already said: Just any user needs to issue:

Code: Select all

firefox
in a terminal then post the output when it crashes.

(More posts (outputs) from more users will be more helpful for devs.)

Okay, this is the terminal output relating to opening tumblr.com, followed by an almost instant crash:

Note - the same "failed to initialise VAAPI connection" message appears when starting Librewolf - a Firefox clone also upgraded to version 110 a few days ago - in a terminal. But there, similarities end. Librewolf does NOT crash, whereas Firefox 110 tirelessly does...

mine doesn't crash (at least not as often as being reported here), but when started gets the same message about VAAPI as reported elsewhere...

What happens when you disable hardware acceleration?

Well... I have returned the settings back to as it was before and it is still running
If it fails I will report obviously, but it is interesting that things went pear shaped as soon as I started messing with:

Code: Select all

media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled
media.ffvpx.enabled
media.rdd-vpx.enabled
media.navigator.mediadatadecoder_vpx_enabled
BTW,

1-this is what is happening at the moment (while it is running fine):

Code: Select all

$ firefox
[GFX1-]: glxtest: VA-API test failed: no supported VAAPI profile found.
ATTENTION: default value of option mesa_glthread overridden by environment.

My problem is solved I think. I haven't had a crash all day after I changed this setting in firefox's about:config:

Code: Select all

gfx.canvas.accelerated                                 true                                                        =====> false
This was because the new release notes mention:
It's now possible to import bookmarks, history and passwords not only from Edge, Chrome or Safari but also from Opera, Opera GX, and Vivaldi for all the folks who want to move over to Firefox instead!

GPU sandboxing has been enabled on Windows.
Note: A bug in the popular X-Mouse Button Control (XMBC) tool may cause mouse wheel scrolling to stop working. The author(s) are working on an update. Meanwhile, scrolling can be restored by reconfiguring XMBC: either disable the Make scroll wheel scroll window under cursor option in the global settings, or enable the Disable scroll window under cursor option if using a custom profile for Firefox.

On Windows, third-party modules can now be blocked from injecting themselves into Firefox, which can be helpful if they are causing crashes or other undesirable behavior.

Date, time, and datetime-local input fields can now be cleared with Cmd+Backspaceand Cmd+Deleteshortcut on macOS and Ctrl+Backspaceand Ctrl+Deleteon Windows and Linux.

GPU-accelerated Canvas2D is enabled by default on macOS and Linux.

WebGL performance improvement on Windows, MacOS and Linux.

Enables overlay of hardware-decoded video with non-Intel GPUs on Windows 10/11, improving video playback performance and video scaling quality.[/list]
Yesterday, I was wrongly chasing 'gpu sandboxing' but that has been enabled since Firefox 109 at least and I had no problems with FF 109. If you want to disable it you can change this setting:

Code: Select all

security.sandbox.gpu.level to '0' (zero)

Mine was already set to '0'. Also disabling hardware acceleration had no effect. DISABLING THE GPU-ACCELERATED CANVAS2D SETTING WORKED.

That is very interesting @BitterTruth
I have checked my gfx.canvas.accelerated and it is/was set to=true
so maybe this is why I never really had any problems?

I think it might be because your on a different graphic driver to the rest of us (@dema2, @mike lovin, @pianokeyjoe) are all using:

OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphics (ILK) v: 2.1 Mesa 20.3.5

I am using:

OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Ironlake Mobile v: 2.1 Mesa 18.3.6 direct render: Yes

You are using:

OpenGL: renderer: NV168 v: 4.3 Mesa 22.0.5 direct render: Yes

I have to say one of my machines is using the same driver as (@dema2, @mike lovin, @pianokeyjoe) and it has no problems. Not even with gfx.canvas.accelerated = true 9_9

COULD IT BE THE INTEL IRONLAKE CPU GRAPHICS AT FAULT HERE in combination with xfce4's compositor which apparently also does 2d hardware accelaration when enabled?

Inspector Clouseau :

It may be due to Mesa version:

Code: Select all

dema2 Mesa 20.3.5

pianokeyjoe	Mesa 20.3.5 (MX 19)

mike lovin Mesa 20.3.5 (MX 19)

BitterTruth	Mesa 18.3.6 (MX 19)

BitterTruth	Mesa 20.3.5	(no issues)

bambuko Mesa 22.0.5	(better now, he says)

@BitterTruth I am going to see if the next time FF crashes, I try using a different Desktop or WM for a while and see if the crashes stop. You may be right, the XFCE4 compositor is ON on my machines all the time and FF may be having a fit now. But it could be the graphics driver/CPU..

Crashes are very random so.. guessing game anyone?

Since it's a common issue in your case with different browsers:

Other than doing the above solution for FF. :

in all browsers open settings/preferences, search for "hardware acceleration".. disable. Close it, restart, try.

I too have been experiencing Firefox crashes on some, but not all, web pages. I've tried changing the Firefox setting gfx.canvas.accelerated from true to false, as suggested previously, but the crashes still occur.

When Firefox crashes these are the messages displayed in the console window:
Firefox_Console_Output.txt
As posted by others, the first line is displayed as soon as Firefox is launched. The remaining lines are displayed just before Firefox crashes. Here is a typical Firefox crash report:
Firefox_Crash_Report.txt
I've seen comments on the web that this behavior could be a graphics driver problem so, at their suggestion, I've run "vainfo -G":
vainfo_Output.txt
but it's unclear to me if this is useful. These are the drivers currently installed on my system:
installed_Drivers.txt
Those same comments suggested using the "radeonsi_dri.so" driver (I don't know why) but I don't know how to do that.
As a side note, I do recognize that my graphics hardware is rather old.

I'm at a loss as to how to proceed further. As it stands, I'm hesitant to use Firefox since it crashes rather often. Some posters have reverted to the previous version of Firefox and that stopped the crashes. I'm willing to try that if someone can tell me how to do it. Otherwise, I'm open to any other suggestions.

Thanks for reading this far!

Did you also try this?

Settings: search for "hardware acceleration".. uncheck "Use hardware acceleration when available".

Close FF, restart.

If still not, uninstall FF (you can simply use MX Package Installer)

then, 109 are available here:

64 bit: http://it.mxrepo.com/antix/bullseye/poo ... _amd64.deb

32 bit: http://it.mxrepo.com/antix/bullseye/poo ... 1_i386.deb

No, I did not change "hardware acceleration". Following your suggestion I brought up "settings" from the edit menu and searched for it but Firefox could not find it. When I tried switching to "Performance" under the "General" topic, Firefox crashes.

Thanks for the link to version 109. I'll try it if a fix can't be found.

Sorry I forgot the "Quick System Info" stuff in my original post- here 'tis:
QuickSystemInfo.txt

Just switched back to FF 110.1 which is an MX update and instantly crashed. So guess no real solution was ever found? baaack to 108.2 lol. Wow. Mozilla has failed us.

Actually, the solution seems to have been found, as posted in post #27 by @BitterTruth
BitterTruth wrote: Sun Feb 19, 2023 5:17 pm My problem is solved I think. I haven't had a crash all day after I changed this setting in firefox's about:config:

Code: Select all

gfx.canvas.accelerated                                 true                                                        =====> false
Okay, I normally use LibreWolf, but I tested all the pages that caused Firefox to crash before the solution, and not a single negative outcome since.

Hmm, I thankyou guys for pointing out a temporary solution as in post 27. But the sad fact is you need accelerated hardware driver support to have a pleasant youtube and facebook, bitchute, rumbl, etc, experience. I have not heard or read back what the outcome of disabling hardware video acceleration has done to the online streaming and video watching experience. My common sense tells me it would be pretty bad. But, I could be wrong. In the end I opted to uninstall FF110 in synaptic and then hunt down a backed up deb file of FF108.2 and then restore my old profile bits that mean the most to me. All is well now. I will have to wait till Mozilla fixes this as it seems to affect alot of folks not just us. Hardware driver issue was the first things I read in the error log(crashlog). So yeah, that is baaaad. Anyways, temp solution does work for most but some machines and setups have been reported to still fail with FF randomly crashing..
