Unable to login normally

I hate to say this but I don't know what I did or if an update broke this.
What the issue is:
Machine boots up , gets to the login screen, enter password , pressing enter does nothing , pressing the enter with the mouse does nothing.
Have to ctrl-alt-f1 , enter login credentials, enter startx
Other way to login is set user to login automatically.
Here is QSI

After you login that way
Also check whether partition(s) got full:
(...But if the QSI is new: they look ok)

Didn't make a difference.

List wasn't as big as I thought it was
Code: Select all
dcihon@mx21xfce:~$ ls -aR | grep root
...
That command you issued would find files with "root" within the name.
Not sure it would help, figure out the show stopper you manage somehow to create.
Also you have already changed all permissions
with sudo chown -R dcihon:dcihon /home/dcihon/
which would not make an search action to find anything with is owned by root anymore.
BTW, trying to find files owned by root with the home-directory and beneath
may be done this way:

With ls you just needed to add a l to -aR

Oh, in the meantime, that may be an indication "itself": ll works with user and not in a root terminal (say, after a
su ) etc. (no such command there)
i.e.
Code: Select all
$ cd /
huck@Huckleberry:/
$ ll
total 68K
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 Oct 30 2020 bin -> usr/bin
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4.0K Jul 9 16:23 boot
drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 3.7K Oct 6 12:36 dev
drwxr-xr-x 146 root root 12K Oct 6 16:12 etc
...
huck@Huckleberry:/
$ su
Password:
root@Huckleberry:/# ll
bash: ll: komut yok
( "komut yok" : "No such command" )

the other thing that can cause this is errors in display setup scripts that are called by lightdm at login, in case anything like that has been edited.

"ll" would not work because that's an alias that doesn't exist in root account, use "ls -l" instead or "ls -al" for all files.

OK I appreciate everyone's help but we are confusing each other I think
I haven't ran any commands as root
Code: Select all
dcihon@mx21xfce:~$ ll
ll: command not found
d
The find command you had me run only finds my music files in the mnt directory I created
I didn't do anything with lightdm that I am aware of.
Can you tell me what lightdm files to post here for you to look at.

if you haven't messed with the lightdm config, there isn't much point. but /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf would be the file.

The file is dated today but that is probably because I used MXTools User manager to change from use password to login automatically.
Right now it should be set at use password.

Yes, I just meant normally it works with user and not with root (therefore (since yours didn't work as user) it would be a sign that things might've changed to root.) (Whatever.. we can eliminate that as the other command shows just the music files and directory).
What if you create a new user with "MX User Manager" and then try to login with that?
Re: Unable to login normally

I was really hoping that would work bu it didn't .
new user has the same issue.
That is interesting.
Should I try to uninstall lightdm or try a different login manager?

Then, yes, it's something system-wide.
If you like, first purge, then reinstall lightdm

I think I will save the configuration files first in case that isn't the solution.

Yes, of course you can.
Code: Select all
sudo apt purge lightdm -y ; sudo apt update ; sudo apt install lightdm -y
I'm on MX 19 at the moment, but these are the related packages:
Code: Select all
$ apt list *lightdm* -i

Then we need to celebrate this:
Don't ever say you don't have this in that beautiful and big music library:

Ok I put the lightdm.conf file that I kept and the problem reappeared.
This section in the file has some items active as shown below.
I am going to comment lines out to see what one is causing the issue.
Code: Select all
[SeatDefaults]
#type=xlocal
xserver-command=X -dpi $DPI
#xserver-layout=
#xserver-config=
xserver-allow-tcp=false
#xdmcp-manager=
#xdmcp-port=177
#xdmcp-key=
greeter-session=lightdm-webkit2-greeter
#greeter-hide-users=true
#greeter-allow-guest=true
#greeter-show-manual-login=false
#greeter-show-remote-login=true
#user-session=default
#allow-guest=true
#guest-session=UNIMPLEMENTED
session-wrapper=/etc/X11/Xsession
display-setup-script=/usr/local/bin/early-bg
#greeter-setup-script=
#session-setup-script=
#session-cleanup-script=
#autologin-guest=false
#autologin-user=dcihon
autologin-user-timeout=0
#autologin-session=UNIMPLEMENTED
#exit-on-failure=false

Ok I commented out this line and the problem goes away.
I don't watch updates that closely.
Has this greeter changed recently or how do I check that?
Do any of you use this greeter?
Code: Select all
greeter-session=lightdm-webkit2-greeter

so I did some research on this lightdm-webkit2-greeter
I kind of remember installing this at some point and it had been working just fine so I kept it.
It looks like this project has been abandoned.
I will stop using this.
Sorry everyone for trying to help when all along it had nothing to do with original MX.

There is indeed a bug in the current webkit2gtk package in combination with lightdm greeters either downgrade that one version or use the default gtk greeter

I don't know what AVL uses but here is another link to better explain what is going on.
Arch seems to use this also.

AVL is normally Openbox and Xfce/Lightdm was later installed by the user...

I think I will save the configuration files first in case that isn't the solution.
