I had been running a Lenovo/Thinkpad R61i Core2Duo 2GB RAM from 2010 until the battery died. Haven't been able to get a new battery yet. It ran MX-21 XFCE as my daily driver. I replaced it with a Lenovo Ideapad 330S, with a Core i3-8130U and 4GB RAM and four threads. which also runs MX-21 XFCE. But I don't consider that an "old beast" yet. It's from 2018 and also runs Win11. My second/backup is now an HP ProBook 4520s from 2011. A Core i3-380M with four threads and 6GB RAM. That runs MX-21 KDE very well. I take it on road trips. It's a little "bulky" when compared to the Lenovo but I like it. Except for the touchpad. It's too far to the left and a little jerky. I have Win7 on it also but almost always use MX.

I have MX-21 KDE running happily on a 12 year old HP 8460p laptop that sports a 240GB SSD and 1TB HDD in an upgrade bay as well as 16GB RAM. Runs pretty snappily on this quad core 2nd gen i7 CPU to boot. Even though this machine has basic Intel graphics, no issues related to graphics (albeit not a gaming GPU) either.

In all, MX will be able to bring many older machines back to life especially ones too old to really run any version of Windows reliably.

I am still running an old Dell Latitude D830 with Mx Linux 19.4 & my build own pc desktop with Intel Core i7 920 x58 chipset on KDE 21.1 & Win 10 dual boot. My desktop maybe on the way out unless I can solve potential overheating. * I suspect the Nvidia GTS 250 card. These are from 2005 - 2009 era. I am doing my darnest to squeeze the life out of them. lol Not looking forward to upgrade, but that will come for sure when Win 10 dies in Oct 2025 since I can't udate to WIn 11 which officially launched last Oct 2021.

I still have a running Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop (the actual year and model number have worn off the bottom) with a T2500 2 Ghz Centrino Duo Processor, I believe this was the first 2 core Dell laptop and it was sadly still only 32bit. When I bought it new I spent way too much money on a 1920x1200 screen option but to be honest I never regretted it, it's still a better screen than most mid-level laptops. I upgraded the RAM to 2Gb several years ago and put a Samsung EVO 250Gb SSD.. It's currently running an MX-21 base with Enlightenment..

Was sitting in a meeting where I brought my old battle-scarred, heavy, and very solid 10 year old Dell Latitude E6430, while surrounded by others with mostly sleek macbooks and one Dell XPS. They looked at my laptop with a "does that thing still work?" look, while MX Linux fired up very quickly and very snappy with its SSD drive and 16G ram, and its built like a tank. It was a fun experience, kind of like driving up to a group of Tesla's with a '57 Chevy. Granted, my battery doesn't last as long and the display is nowhere near a retina display. Still, with XFCE themed out just like I like it, and as snappy as it is, its awesome.

To me, this is not an 'old' laptop (by my definition), but to many it will be. The battery life is less than 5mins now. If I ever settle on a decent non-Dell battery manufacturer I can trust, then I will replace the battery. I have dropped the laptop more than once (mostly snagging cable-related accidents) and it has survived (no broken hinges, etc.), which has been a very different experience to some other laptops I have used. Good enough for me.

Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. U180 (it's a netbook, IIRC released circa 2011)

processor Intel® Atom™ N2600 × 4
disk 320.1 GB

Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) (actually MX 23.4) 64bit

.... and still going (fairly) strong, though not very fast
