All-time record high temperatures here today in San Diego, and now fire

It hit 114 F (45.5 C) here in the San Diego East County today, and may even be a little hotter tomorrow. Alpine, the town just north of the Valley fire in the linked video, hit its highest reading ever of 113 F. :frown:

So of course, somehow a wild fire started. Here's the latest time lapse from 6-9 PM as it moves west (towards me). :frown: :frown: It's still under 2,000 acres, so is dwarfed by the mega fires in the rest of California, such as those mmikeinsantarosa has had to deal with the past few years, but we had been spared up to now down here. There are some misinformed people (to be charitable) that have said that California needs to "clean" its forests to prevent the fires somehow, but you can see that these hills have already been clean of forests since the end of the last Ice Age, and we still get the fires.

45.5 C - Heck! We think is is too hot in NZ when we near 34 C (93F). That time lapse is impressive and a bit scary. South Island
here is getting over a 6,000 acre wildfire at present. Fortunately it snowed and rained dowsing much of the visible fire but it is continuing
with the old buried timber and firefighters are having to dig up the hot spots, may take months and winter is just finishing. Hopefully summer
may bring more rain.

Ashes are now falling here in Santee like a gentle snowfall. I'm about ten miles west of the blaze, with a lot of suburban development between it and my location, unless it explodes and does an end-around to the north. Luckily, there's no wind--just a hot, still night. We aren't supposed to get hot, dry winds until Tuesday or Wednesday, so I hope it's contained by then, and doesn't generate any fire tornados. :crossfingers: :crossfingers:

The plume did generate some nice pyrocumulus clouds during the afternoon, though, which blocked the blazing sunlight here somewhat.

Hope that the Cu buildup does not result in much static charge with lightning to start more fires.

I saw a comedian on YouTube the other night (it may have been Ross Noble) who commented on headlines that say things like "hottest temperature ever." He observed that "ever" means ever, that the earth is around 4.5 billion years old, and that in another 6 billion years the sun will turn into a red giant causing earth's temperatures to be in the thousands of degrees. He said that he's pretty sure that the hottest temperatures ever will be when that happens.

That fire will generate its own wind. Be safe, Stevo.

We also now know that at certain times in its history, the earth completely froze over all the way to the equator, aka "Snowball Earth", like in the Snowpiercer film. (Boy, that sounds good right now). The last one was still before the advent of complex life, but after single cell bugs had already been around for billions of years. It's thought that the microbes survived the deep freeze in scattered volcanic hot springs under miles of frozen ocean until volcanoes added enough CO2 to the atmosphere to melt the ice via the greenhouse effct..

I think I saw earlier on the news that Boulder, Colorado will be 99 degrees, and a few days later 35 degrees and a winter storm watch. What is going on with the weather lately?

In the summer of 2016 - 2017, where I used to live in Oz, a few hours north of Sydney, on the coastal plain, we had 10 days of >|= 50 C. (122+ F.) with stinking hot winds blowing 24 hrs/day (fan forced oven). I've never experienced anything like it (& I've spent time out in the center & far north of Oz over the past decades).

We had an acre of gardens, & lived ~400 mtr's from a river. I irrigated all night, every night. Even so, we had brown & black leaves on many plants/shrubs. Many of them lost there leaves & quite a number just died. Birds (& who knows what else) would have died from the heat.

I said to my wife "imagine how hot its going to get here in 10 years time?" As we had noticed the weather changing over the decades that we had lived there. Lets get as close to Antarctica as we can. So we prepared the property, sold up & headed as far south as we could get. This was before the terrible fires that destroyed so many homes, & so much of the bush & wildlife on mainland Oz last year. Which was & is an ecological disaster. Fortunately my location was safe from that tragedy.

Very traumatic times on planet earth these days. I wish Stevo, & everyone else all of the very best, re. their safety & happiness.

Well, it's a dry heat with this heatwave, unlike the muggy heat we had for over a week a couple of weeks ago, so keeping out of the sun helps a lot, along with lots of water and a mister if you can't stay indoors with A/C.

It seemed a few degrees cooler today here, maybe because of the smoke plume blocking some sun, though just north of here, Escondido set an all-time record at 115 F. It's supposed to start cooling off for a few days tomorrow.

The fire continues to burn, though the surface winds pushed it south and east today, into more of a wilderness area.

Apparently it was actually 115 F here on Saturday in Santee, beating that lousy 114 in El Cajon next door. :p
Only 111 on Sunday, due to the smoke. That pales in comparison to some 121 temps in the LA area or the 122 in Solvang just south of my home town, Santa Maria, which came in way behind with only 103. boo!

Was only 90 on Monday, and struggled to reach 80 today, with low overcast most of the day and even some drizzle. The upcoming Santa Ana should blow all the marine moisture out to sea, but the smoke will remain, I bet.

The moisture and cooler air should help a lot with getting the fire under control, anyway. The Santa Ana wind, not so much. :(

Neighbor ....

Spent the most enjoyable, productive part of my adult life in Paradise or MDR in SoCal, a couple clicks north of y'all

I have always been a big-boat kinda guy and MDR was boat heaven - SD not a bad 2nd spot, und a lot warmer :number1:

One particular beautiful evening I invited a young lass from NOLA on a romantic cruise only to watch Malibu burn to
the ground - what a devastating site from the ocean - Dante's Inferno Revisited - romantic it was not

The fires on top of the water-rationing, on top of all the daily Richter R&R nonsense was a sign that it was time to move
on .... dont even talk to me about their carpetbagger taxes ....

Sold everything and went to visit with some friends in HK & PI - landed up in the Land-of-Smiles [Thailand]

It is simply frightening what gross mismanagement has done to my/our State - it used to have the 2nd highest GDP in
the world, right behind the US - its now 3rd world + everybody warns me never to re-visit MDR again

Take care of yourself, your loved ones - will leave the porch-lite on for y'all..

Highest Regards

Jack

Blue River and Vida are totally destroyed. Still too much smoke to fight the fire from the air. It is bad and getting worse.
Smoke everywhere in western Oregon since Monday evening.

The pollution actually seems to have stayed high up with the smoke. It's nothing compared to the Cedar Fire in 2003 here, which burned over 30 miles overnight from its origin into San Diego itself. That Sunday morning, I was driving along the 52 freeway as the fire raged alongside on its way to burn hundreds of homes in Scripps Ranch, then had to evacuate that night as it crept down the hills to Santee, where a heroic battle by firefighters stopped it along wide Mast Blvd before it damaged houses on the other side (that's where I get the coyote pictures, BTW). The fire was intentionally started by a "lost" hunter, BTW, even though he had to know that numerous other major fires were already raging in southern California...

Anyway, we had thick choking smoke for four straight days in all of the area, and it got even thicker on the third day, so we knew the blaze must have turned back east and hit the thick pine forests of Cuyamaca like a bomb. Big chunks of charcoal were falling from the sky, and everyone stayed indoors and wore face masks if they had to go out (deja vu!)--probably what they are getting in other parts of CA and Oregon right now. So far, it's been nothing down here compared to that--I was just mad that the fire had to come at the same time as our historic heat blast.

The local Valley fire seems to be under control now, but a loony arsonist set the vegetation ablaze in the SD River bed here in Santee about 1230 pm yesterday, where there multiple homeless encampments. I heard from a source (may or may not be reliable) that she was ID'd by three witnesses, returned around midnight, set another tree alight, and was caught by deputies standing by in the area. https://patch.com/california/santee/bru ... g-santee-0

I was also testing the new Cawbird 1.2.0, and up in a weather feed popped up a tweet from the Netherlands weather service, saying that the smoke from our fires had made its way there and was giving them hazy overcast. I'm sure everyone has seen lots of photos of our tangerine skies lately in California...the smoke has still stayed high here in SD, so we're at least spared the burning kaleidoscope eyes.

No rain is expected for at least a month, but rainless summers are the norm here. Most of the NorCal fires started from a freak massive thunderstorm outbreak during the first August heatwave--lots of wind and strikes with those, but little rain.

Welcome to 2020 here, my friend. I've already stocked up supplies for the big quake that's sure to hit next. (Not a joke. Everyone in CA should always be prepared for one of those--a major jolt is overdue on many faults here)

Luckily, we don't have any big volcanoes here in Southern California, just a few pipsqueaks out in the deserts. It's not like Seattle with Rainier looming it over it like the sword of Damocles, ready to release a giant mudflow.

Hoping you all can avoid the worst of it. It's like this last season's Black Summer in Australia, except western USA has much higher population density. I travelled through one of the worst hit areas shortly before it was hit and barely avoided being stranded 600km from home due to the main highway being closed for a couple of months. Here's a summary from Wikipedia:
The 2019–20 Australian bushfire season, colloquially known as the Black Summer, was a period of unusually intense bushfires in many parts of Australia.
As of 9 March 2020, the fires burnt an estimated 18.6 million hectares (46 million acres; 186,000 square kilometres; 72,000 square miles), destroyed over 5,900 buildings (including 2,779 homes) and killed at least 34 people. Nearly three billion terrestrial vertebrates alone – the vast majority being reptiles – were affected and some endangered species were believed to be driven to extinction.
Get out early if you have to get out. Most of the fatalities were the brave ones who didn't. Stay safe.

It was a lot cooler under the thicker smoke overcast, but nobody wants that nuclear winter, and now that it's thinned to a haze here, it's much warmer again. I don't think that's what the POTUS really meant, though.

Anyway, here in France many high temp records have been beaten on monday and tuesday. Not as much as Stevo (up to 38°C), but that's clearly unusual mid-september (and combined with a severe drought in many parts of the country)

A few days ago, the Netherlands weather services tweeted that the smoke was giving them a high haze, so I would think it must be passing over the eastern US, too, unless it was taking a circuitous route. Did you see anything, Eadwine?

I know that our weather satellites have special sensors to pick up smoke concentration, just like they can pick up Saharan dust blowing into the Caribbean, so maybe I can find a global overlay of that...

Hmmm--this one shows most of the smoke headed north and west over the Pacific: https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/20 ... anger-zone

https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/godd ... he-pacific

The current visible shot shows most of the Pacific NW under a pall of smoke, though: https://weather.cod.edu/satrad/?parms=s ... =undefined

I live in Southwestern Ontario Canada (actually south of many of the northern United States). We are experiencing 'weird' haze here as well, no doubt the smoke is well into the prevailing westerly gulfstream winds now into the US midwest rust belt and Southern Canada. I would have to guess this phenomenon of smoke being present and affecting atmospheric conditions in places so far from 'ground zero' to this much of a degree must be somewhat unprecedented.

Hang in there folks and keep vigilant, get out when the getting is good! You are in the thoughts, prayers and concerns of people all over the world..

It seems that unfortunately extreme fires in summer are now the new normal. Though it takes some seasons for them to recover enough to provide fuel for the next fire to come through...

There are records in the Eastern US of weird hazy overcasts and "dark days" going back to the earliest occupation by Europeans. Most must have been from huge fires to the west or in Canada, but of course, there's no historical records of the actual fires.

It's well accepted that the weird worldwide overcast of 1815-16 and the "year without a summer" were the result of the ash and SO2 injected into the stratosphere by the huge Tambora eruption in Indonesia. Krakatoa had a similar cloud, just not as thick, and I remember the great sunsets that the El Chichon and Pinatubo eruptions gave us in the 80's and 80's.
