Support, Screen Tearing.

Hello, today I've installed this cool distro!
Everything is working fine, but I have screen tearing. When I am moving a window it just doesn't feel like it's smooth.

I am rocking: AMD GPU (r7 370), AMD Phenom II x6 1090T and 8gb of DDR3 ram.

Thank you

Hi and Welcome.
Use windows manager tweaks. Go to the compositor and try different settings.

Here what mine looks like with no tearing:

Thanks!
My settings are exactly the same and I still have screen tearing..
Do you want a video or something, maybe I am wrong and my problem is not screen tearing?

Also, in my display settings it says that my monitor is using 0hz, lol

I don't have a video sorry. I'm, sure one of the more knowledgeable people will help you out soon.
Change your Hz to 60 manually and save.

There is no option for 60hz only 0hz...

You better post full QSI (as in my signature). Maybe it's kernel-related.. 0 Hz is weird...

What about the "Advanced" tab ?

You can also post the output of

Code: Select all

xrandr

Try the TearFree option for the kernel driver:

Code: Select all

sudo mkdir -p /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
sudo tee /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-tearfree.conf <<!
Section "Device"
   Identifier "AMD"
   Driver "radeon"
   Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection
!
I am presuming the card uses the radeon(4) driver, the QSI output will show for sure. If it says "amdgpu" instead then substitute that in place of "radeon".

If the desktop won't load afterwards then just delete the file at /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-tearfree.conf to revert to the stock configuration.

When asking for help, please first: Menu => MX Tools => Quick System Info

The output is copied into the clipboard automatically including code tags for the forum
So, please do not manually copy but only paste in your post

If you tried my suggestion then simply remove the file, as mentioned at the end of my post.

Looks like your kernel driver isn't loaded, did you select one of the "failsafe" options when booting the MX ISO image?

Please post actual text (using code tags) rather than pictures of text.

Kernel modesetting has been disabled but your card needs that.

Run these commands:

Code: Select all

sudo rm {/usr,}/lib/modprobe.d/no-mode-set.conf
sudo update-initramfs -u -k all
Then reboot and check the 'lspci -k' output again, it should now show this line for your graphics card:

Code: Select all

Kernel driver in use: radeon
If it does then you can create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-tearfree.conf again, it should work once the kernel driver is loaded.

rm: cannot remove '/usr/lib/modprobe.d/no-mode-set.conf': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove '/lib/modprobe.d/no-mode-set.conf': No such file or directory
I can't use the first command.

Weird. Till then can you do this?

Reboot and on Grub screen hit the key E

then add amdgpu.modeset=1

among ... ro quiet splash

as :

ro quiet amdgpu.modeset=1 splash

then hit F10 to go on booting ..

In fact, there seems to be no typo in the commands to delete, but can you have a look there with the file manager for such files?

And do you still have the default kernel 4.19 ? Or have you tried any other kernels?

Maybe installing another kernel from MX Package Installer (Popular Apps tab) .. say 5.4 .. or 5.2 .. 5.1 and booting with that helps ...

You can try these either on the installed MX (as you did on Grub menu) and the ahs live-session, as boot options:

Code: Select all

radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1
or (next trial)

Code: Select all

You can again create:

     Identifier "AMD"
     Driver "amdgpu"

Ok, you can delete it on live session (via file manager) or as you did previously at boot Ctrl alt F1

Meanwhile, on some places it's mentioned that, that card was not supported by AMD.. that may be the reason it does not load the driver(s).. Only one: https://community.amd.com/thread/215489

You can.. just with the Vesa driver it's already using..

(Though it looks it's supported with kernels you tried: https://linux-hardware.org/index.php?id ... -1462-3050 )

In fact, that's up to you. But you can have them at the same time ...

One last thing, my OS was working fine ( no lagging, everything was smooth..), one day I was playing a game and my pc suddenly shuts down, and I couldn't boot anymore and that's where the problem started. From that point I could only boot with nomodeset.

Perhaps it is broken. How does it perform in the live environment?

The dmesg(8) output may provide some clues, this command will upload it to a pastebin and return a link that you can post here:

Code: Select all

sudo dmesg | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io

I can't boot to live usb normally, I need to use nomodeset. I installed windows 10 thinking it will probably fix the problem, but no...

In fact, as in the above links and some other forums, the same card works with "radeon" .
However the complaints are almost the same.. L. Mint, Ubuntu, Manjaro .. So, it's not distro-related .. This time people ask "how can I not use the radeon and use amdgpu instead?" etc..

Though I've no idea if it would work / how to install, the 64bit Linux result on AMD :(https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics ... eon-r7-370)

And.. have you downloaded and installed drivers for Windows (10) ?

Yes, I can download the drivers (while using the microsoft basic display adapter), but the moment I install them and the moment they load my display just turns black, the monitor is on but it just shows black screen. After that I need to hard reboot about 2 times and windows will get in safe mode. I am starting to think that there is something wrong with my GPU...
