[SOLVED] Intel i915 integrated graphics not working on MX 19

by d.j.yotta
Hi all,

On MX Linux 18.3, everything worked out of the box.

Upon installing MX Linux 19 from the live USB (preserving the /home dir), my system came up with a 640x480 resolution.

I tried mucking around with Xorg config to no avail.

I reverted all my edits to Xorg config by copying the Xorg config files from the live USB.

I tried the MX Tweak that forces Intel driver over modesetting driver.

I resorted to the following:
  1. adding these lines to /etc/default/grub:

    Code: Select all

    GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
    GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1440x24

  • editing my xorg.conf to look like this:
    $ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

    Code: Select all

    Section "Device"
       Identifier "Intel Graphics"
       Driver "fbdev"
    EndSection

The result is that I get 1920x1440 res at boot menu (sweet!) but only 1024x768 on X.
I've tried numerous other resolution options both frame buffer and otherwise but the highest I've achieved is 1024x768.

Ideally, I'd like my 1920x1440 res back.

My graphics is integrated Intel i915.
I get a message like: Waited for xxx ms for i915.ko to load with default Xorg.conf

Output of inxi --graphics:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Device-1: Intel 4 Series Integrated Graphics driver: N/A
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.4 driver: none unloaded: fbdev
           resolution: 1280x1024~N/A
           OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 7.0 128 bits) v: 3.3 Mesa 18.3.6
I have uninstalled i965-va-driver via synaptic in case it was confusing things (no difference whether installed or not it seems).
I have uninstalled xserver-xorg-video-vesa as most of the Xorg errors seemed to be due to vesa not understanding my graphics card.
I tried installing the intel-media-va-driver-non-free instead of intel-media-va-driver to no avail.
And several various combinations of the above.

Any help, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks all,
d.j.yotta

Restore your system to the stock package list and try moving the X.Org configuration file out of the way:

Code: Select all

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf{,.bak}
Does it give you full resolution then?

The X.Org log will show exactly what is happening.

Hi
Ideally, I'd like my 1920x1440 res back
in case it not obvious to you....resolution at boot menu is independent of Xorg, so you never had Xorg resolution at 1920 etc.

but I wonder if your i915 needs firmware?

I am have a i915 but Xorg log does not show anything but maybe you could in addition to above suggestions look at posting the output for any positive hits for

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep error
dmesg | grep fw
cheers

What about different kernels? 4.9.200 and the latest stable 5.2.21 both in Stable Repo in MXPI.

Right you are - I do realize the boot menu has nothing to do with Xorg - I was referring to the 1920x1440 res I had under Xorg with MX 18.

I got no hits in dmesg for either error or fw.
Thanks though.

I tried the latest 5.x and the earliest one I could find - though now you mention it, I think I only went back to 4.19
I guess 4.9 is earlier than that... I'll give it a go.

Restore your system to the stock package list and try moving the X.Org configuration file out of the way:

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf{,.bak}
Does it give you full resolution then?

Yes, I have tried the stock Xorg conf.

I've had the issue ever since first boot into the installed MX 19 system.

The Live USB had high res, but the first boot into the installed system had the 640x480 res.

I'll go ahead and restore the stock packages, and move my config to a backup, and post the Xorg log.

Ok, I restored the packages I removed and restored the /etc/default/grub and /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d back to stock.

I rebooted and got 640x480 resolution again.

I've attached the Xorg log

I guess 4.9 is earlier than that... I'll give it a go.
So I just tried 4.4 and 4.9 linux kernel with stock Xorg conf and /etc/default/grub.
No joy.

Actually, I've noticed that I can't get internet (via tethered mobile) on those kernels.

I'm on kernal 5.x now and with my frame buffer hack I have 1024x768 res, which is bearable, and tethering my phone works.

I don't know if the phone not tethering is related to the kernel version or just another symptom of the 640x480 res (ie, Xorg not loading devices properly?).

Honestly, I don't like switching between the stock config and mine as it takes time and I the 640x480 res is too small to function and internet doesn't work.

Thanks

I notice your intel video driver is not found....compared to my Xorg log.

ME
Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so
SNI intel(0): [DRI2] DRI driver: i965
[ 10.235] (II) intel(0): [DRI2] VDPAU driver: va_gl
[ 10.235] (II) intel(0): direct rendering: DRI2 enabled

I wonder if you have deleted some packages still?

what does

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep intel
did you re-install the packages you uninstalled on page 1

EDIT
I am thinking the min for an intel video package result would be apart from common and core
xserver-xorg-video-fbdev

Ok, so that worked ... sort of.

I'm back to stock /etc/default/grub (with the addition of i915.modeset=1) and I had to do: sudo x -configure

But with that I have a reasonable resolution 1680x1050.

Note that Xorg is still choosing framebuffer weirdly... see attached log.

Maybe it's because I mucked with the packages...

Only drawback with framebuffer is the text in my terminal is super crappy. I'll choose a different typeface as a workaround for now, but would like to get to the bottom of the weird display issues...

Thanks aus9 for your killer kernel param.

is there a log attached to post 16
or was there no change to log attached to post 10?

Did you boot up without that kernel parameter first, found Xorg to be poor
or just blindly added it?

EDIT
there is still something wrong with your setup.
I just rebooted with the i915 kernel parameter or bootcode and experienced no error messages to reconfigure xserver.

my Xorg log snippet is

boot up live media with no kernel parameter
save your Xorg log and output to inxi -Gxx (or whatever)

reboot live media with kernel parameter and save stuff

just remembered....I went into MX Tweak -> TAB=Config Options and set the intel driver preferred to the modesetting driver

but these 2 files have the same contents
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
/usr/share/mx-tweak/20-intel.conf

I am guessing ....if you do not do that tweak.....the etc....*conf file will not exist

Does it find the full resolution if you remove all X.Org configuration files and let X auto-configure?

The log shows that the VESA driver is trying (and failing) to load, which isn't right.

while waiting for OP to reply....

if I untick the box in MX Tweak to no LONGER force intel over modeset....it removes the conf file from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

now test my reboot with a grub resolution different to my preferred....made 800x600

on boot up with no kernel parameter set ....still no msg to reconfigure Xserver

I suggest this driver modesetting.....is what normal intel users should see, all factors being equal.
The Live USB had high res, but the first boot into the installed system had the 640x480 res.
so I am now thinking....the live boot up was probably with
no kernel parameter
no grub resolution set
no file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
and correct packges still installed

That's the same driver Xorg loaded on the live USB.

Shame no accelerated graphics... maybe I should use the MXTweak to force Intel driver?

Thanks aus9, you've been a big help.

That's the same driver Xorg loaded on the live USB.

A few minutes after boot I get crazy graphics and it freezes.
Similarly, on the live USB it froze after a few minutes. So I had to do the install in failsafe graphics mode.

Maybe I should stick with framebuffer if the other drivers are buggy...

glxgears should already be installed and if run it as a normal user it will show you a frame rate.

and to your last reply....Head_on_a_Stick and others have attempted to see you with results for a normal system
and I attempted in post 20 at the bottom to make it clearer....what I would like you to try.

(grumbles) but nearly every normal person tends to shorten their replies so it hard to know exactly what you did.
Hint!
Similarly, on the live USB it froze after a few minutes
this appears to be new information....that might explain why you varied from what I might think is a normal install....EDIT....oops you already posted in bugs

hmm I have seem to have turned you off....so this is my last post here in the hope you come back?

intel crashes seem to be a known issue on another distro and they suggest turning off acceleration if its on
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/in ... tel_driver

our 20 intel file....defaults to
# Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" #could also use the default "sna"
so we needed to remove the hash and reboot to activate it.

but that causes on my hardware some massive slowdown in glxgears and gtkperf and that might indicate that is happening to you?

Did you boot up without that kernel parameter first, found Xorg to be poor
or just blindly added it?

EDIT
there is still something wrong with your setup.
I just rebooted with the i915 kernel parameter or bootcode and experienced no error messages to reconfigure xserver.

my Xorg log snippet is

save your Xorg log and output to inxi -Gxx (or whatever)

reboot live media with kernel parameter and save stuff

I think possible I was bounced back to the login page and then had to repost and forgot to attach it... I can't really attach it now as I don't know which one it is and don't want to add more confusion.

OK, I've now read post 18 and 19 and 20 for the first time (somehow missed them before).

Here is what I did originally:

1. Boot off live USB
2. Started install preserving /home
3. Screen froze a few minutes in
4. Reset and try again
5. Got further into install but screen froze.
6. Reset and choose failsafe graphics.
7. Install succeeds.
8. First boot: 640x480 res.
9. Reboot in hope it magically comes right.
10. View the Xorg log.
11. Saw vesa failing to load so removed all related packages.
12. Reboot
13. Still 640x480 res.
14. MXTweak to force Intel
15. Reboot.
16. No graphics at all.
17. Boot into Live USB
18. restore the Xorg.conf files (just 00-blah.conf and 10.synaptic.conf etc ...)
19. Reboot
20. 640x480 res.
21. Install non-free intel drivers
22. MX Tweak to force Intel
23. Reboot
24. No graphics
25. Try force framebuffer (I know it works) by using the 20-Intel.conf and sticking my own options there.
26. Failed to get framebuffer working.
27. Added the grub config options
28. Framebuffer works.
29. 1024x768 res.
30. Still not happy, but can actually use my pc
31. Posted here.

Sorry, it's hard to remember all the steps exactly, but that's about right.

Doesn't seem to make any difference which AccelMethod I use. With and without the line commented out I get the same results.

Can verify also that removing the 20-intel.conf (ie, disabling the MX Tweak) causes no graphics at all on boot.
Can verify that with no kernel param, I get 650x480 wether xorg conf or fully automatic.

Does it find the full resolution if you remove all X.Org configuration files and let X auto-configure?

The log shows that the VESA driver is trying (and failing) to load, which isn't right.
No, if I remove any xorg configs, nothing works.
NOTE: I have never moved the 10-evdev.conf or the synaptics.conf - do you want me to move them out of the way also?

So far the only combinations that yield any graphics at all is:

1. i915.modeset=1 kernel param with Xorg 20-intel.conf provided by MXTweak
2. /etc/default/grub to set grub resolution and linux set to "keep" plus Xorg config forcing framebuffer device

The latter is very poor quality (1024x768), and the former is ok (1680x1050).

Oh, I just figured out what you are talking about.

So when I first tried your kernel param i915.modeset=1, it seemed to work great.

Then after I was just about to call the issue solved, my graphics borked. I tried to upload a photo, but I couldn't get it small enough.

I don't know how that issue got resolved but it hasn't happened since. Not confident I've fixed it - I think I just got "unlucky" when it borked.

In an attempt to aid y'all in figuring out what may be the cause of the broken initial install, here is an Xorg log from a Live USB stick with MX 19 installer on.

Hi

11. Saw vesa failing to load so removed all related packages.
I will comment on your missing gl file later as this is related.

what does this mean?
Are you seeing inxi -G that vesa is unloaded....so you are doing something like

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-vesa
additional comment....generally speaking xorg tries to use ....unless their is an
xorg.conf.....the highest driver....then fallbacks to the next highest until
it gets to the basic drivers.
21. Install non-free intel drivers.
how and which ones....its ok to talk about them...just not attach the binaries to your post

post 30
Can verify that with no kernel param, I get 650x480 wether xorg conf or fully automatic
can you post what xorg.conf you created please?

Normally...on most modern distros....xorg does not set a fixed xorg.conf but it conf-less
but using confs....in the deamon dir called /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

I do not have xorg.conf......and suspect most other MX users do not need one either

there is an easy way of seeing your removal logs

Code: Select all

cd /var/log/apt/
attach the uncompressed history.log to your reply
but you may have more history logs ending in gz
I have only one....so here is one way to get it

Code: Select all

zcat history.log.1.gz > /tmp/history-1.txt
then attach that file from /tmp too.

here is an example of one of my removals put in a code box for display purposes only

and I am thinking out aloud....your resolution was good on MX18.3

can you boot that back up....as live product....and post its Xorg.log?
and confirm you were or not using kernel parameter
and confirm you had no /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d ...intel conf

we should be able to work this out by comparing what driver you were truly using on MX18.3
what settings etc

2) IN addition....if you feel like it.....
at any live boot up or any install boot up....at the bootloader menu screen

press C (for command mode)
type vbeinfo and press enter

what is the asterisk (*) against....1920x1440 or something else

then press the Escape to get back to menu and confinue your boot up

I'll answer this first as it's the easiest.

On MX18.3 I had no Xorg conf, and no kernel parameters. Just stock standard MX.
I can boot it back up as a live product with some small difficulty... I'll see if I get time.

I'll post vbeinfo in a separate post.

When I saw vesa failing to load, AND that Xorg failed to find a fallback driver (even though I knew fb would work), I removed packages with vesa in the name and opted for mesa ones (I was trying to understand from just the descriptions). Yes, this was a bit dumb, but I didn't force anything or break any dependencies - I trusted synaptic to do something sensible.

So to clarify, I only removed packages via apt-get or synaptic.

I removed:

Code: Select all

xserver-xorg-video-vesa
I swapped:

Code: Select all

i965-va-driver
for

Code: Select all

i965-va-driver-non-free
I installed:

Code: Select all

xserver-xorg-video-fbdev
I've attached my history if you care to look.

I probably installed a few other unrelated packages because it was hard to tell just from the description if it may help Xorg find the right drivers. I guess the history will tell all.

I do not have xorg.conf......and suspect most other MX users do not need one either

sorry its a long post
What I mean by, "11. Saw vesa failing to load" is that the Xorg showed the driver being loaded, and then logs like "couldn't find matching config" or something similar to that and then "unloading vesa". Which I assumed was Xorg's way of saying that it tried vesa and that didn't work and was trying something else.
So yes, I removed the xorg-video-vesa package (no purge though).

My thinking was if I could manipulate which drivers it tried first, I may actually get a driver (any driver) to load, because I was either getting 640x480 or no graphics at all no matter which drivers it picked. Xorg never seemed to try framebuffer or dri drivers.
Part of my confusion as to what the hell Xorg was trying to do was due to seemingly totally ignoring my Xorg conf (ie, the MX Tweak conf AND my framebuffer conf). So I resorted to removing the drivers I knew weren't working to try and force it's hand.
I see now that what was the real issue was the drivers not being loaded at all (in terms of framebuffer) or not soon enough (in terms of the i915 modesetting driver).

Regarding post 34, I have these installed already:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install libgl1:amd64 libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64
I regret post 34 as I had just tried to run a game I used to play, and it's 32 bit, and my googling revealed it was because I didn't have the 32 bit drivers installed (only the 64 bit ones). Nevertheless, installing the 32bit glx drivers immediately solved the issue.
Sorry about that, I jumped to conclusion without first looking deeper into the real issue there.

Regarding my res being 1920x1440 vs 1680x1050 - it's possible I've confused myself on my specific screen resolution. I'm happy with the 1680x1050 in any case. I have a niggly suspicion I have seen 1440x900 in the past and mistaken this for 1920x1440 or something...

Yes, I'm using xorg.conf atm, (tried the MX Tweak - but I don't think it is helping or hindering).

1. NO kernel param, NO Xorg.conf ---- doesn't work
2. NO kernel param, YES Xorg.conf ---- doesn't work (neither intel nor framebuffer Xorg help any)
3. YES kernel param, NO Xorg.conf ---- I *think* this doesn't work (just need an Xorg conf with "intel" driver specified)
4. YES kernel param, YES Xorg.conf ---- works (currently using the Xorg conf provided by MXTweak video acceleration method uxa or sna doesn't seem to make a difference)

Either of the methods:
a) the GRUB config to "keep" the bootloader settings - results in framebuffer or
b) the i915.modeset=1 work.
The latter works better.
I have been unsuccessful getting any graphics at all other than 640x480 res with no kernel parameter specified.

Furthermore, I believe that I still need the Xorg.conf with a device set to use "intel" for any graphics even with the i915.modeset=1 kernel param.

So I pressed C at boot and typed vbeinfo into the grub prompt.

There were various screen resolutions listed including (surprisingly) 1920x1440 and down to 640x480.
The resolution 1280x1024 is highlighted with an (*).

Cheers.

ahhh...I "TRY" clear up confusion on xorg.conf

when I asked about xorg.conf I was specifically asking are you using an xorg.conf file that you created or was created for you by
running the xserver reconfigure command you mentioned in the past.

if you run

Code: Select all

man xorg
# also worth a read
man Xserver
you can get a hint on what xorg tries first.....but if you have a /etc/X11/xorg.conf then that over rides confless
Is that clearer?

so unless I am wrong...you are claiming you did not create or use with 18 series or 19 series any /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

MX has a simple way to create this file but first lets just clarify what your resolutions might be capable of for your current best driver

post the output of

Code: Select all

xrandr

and one reply to post 40.

thanks for the detailed info.

It might be an idea....as I suggested it...what that kernel parameter is attempting. I looked at the Debian wiki but prefer Arch
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ke ... de_setting

Basically we have 2 opposite effects

we have i915.modeset=1 kernel paramenter and we are attempting to bypass normal xorg confless setup and use the kernel modesetting

or we can use i915.modeset=0......and hope we use xorg setup.

I have not looked into my init ram filesystem to see if modules for i915 are pre-loading but
if you scroll down in that arch wiki you will see a max size of resolutions.......and this is one of the issues you claim to have

and arch says
If you are doing early KMS, you must include the custom EDID file in the initramfs, otherwise you will run into problems.
but I could not find 1920x1080.bin on my system.

Therefore....I now offer a reverse suggestion

use a kernel parameter to disable and force the system to use xorg
that will then allow us to make an real xorg.conf........if we have the correct drivers installed etc
and with the results of xrandr

I have now had to time to do slightly more research....do not proceed unless you are happy to take notes because you will be at the console login screen for some of these commands

first I attempted the MX simple script as described here
https://mxlinux.org/wiki/hardware/xorg-conf/
It does not IMHO give you a lot to tweak....file is bare minimum.

so here are my notes on creating a full xorg.conf with the usual caveats....TRY AT OWN RISK
However, as I know you have a live product you can mount the internal drive and use root powers to delete the xorg.conf if you find
you system crashes. BTW I am typing away on a real xorg.conf.

first setup
You will need to change your kernel parameter to i915.modeset=0 to force Xorg to be used instead of kernel mode setting
and
leave the 20-intel.conf under /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d please

steps when logged in to Xorg (X)
step one write detailed notes on what you will need to type at the console, they are non-intuitive.
Each command after typing it....you press enter....sorry if that sounds childish but I am trying to be specific.
I have deliberately not showing console commands in code boxs but quote boxes

step two In Xorg (or in X)

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm stop
this immediately kicks you out of X to a console prompt

step 3 login as a local user at this prompt screen

step 4 at the console prompt type command...sudo su to save prefacing sudo for some more commands
sudo su
Xorg :1 -configure
The forum may truncate space so its
Xorg space :1 space -configure.....OK?

You will see output to the screen and that a xorg.conf.new is sitting under /root

step 5...As you claim you never used a real xorg.conf in past attempts......type new command
mv /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
step 6 ....altho we could restart the lightdm daemon I prefer you do a full reboot
reboot
#################
Normal GUI login should appear....and then you can check

Code: Select all

inxi -Gxxx
and check your Xorg.log.0 at /var/log

good luck

My attachment is my log but to save you downloading it ....it says

when I asked about xorg.conf I was specifically asking are you using an xorg.conf file that you created or was created for you by
running the xserver reconfigure command you mentioned in the past.

Code: Select all

xrandr
Ok, so I never used a an xorg.conf - I only ever put conf snippets in xorg.conf.d
I did actually do: X -configure and copy the auto generated conf into xorg.conf.d at one point but it didn't help any. I guess because I put it in xorg.conf.d instead of just a file at xorg.conf

On MX 18, I never used xorg.conf or any modifications to xorg.conf.d or any X related configuration. Everything just worked.

Regarding Xorg jargon etc, I'll RTFM harder.

Here is the output of xrandr:

Code: Select all

$ xrandr

   720x400 70.08
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
Note that that output was obtained on my current (almost) stable solution of using i915.modset=1 kernel param and just the 20-intel.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/.
Did you want me to post the output of xrandr from the live stick?

Here is what I've done.
I left the 20-intel.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
To clarify, 20-intel.conf reads:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
#Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" #could also use the default "sna"
   #Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection
Then:
1. Reboot
2. Edited boot line to change i915.modeset=1 to i915.modeset=0
3. No graphics at all
4. didn't stop lightdm as I had no graphics
5. Xorg :1 -configure failed: see attached output
6. tried to do /etc/init.d/lightdm stop (just in case)
7. Xorg :1 -configure failed again: failed with the same errors
8. Reboot (back to my current working -ish solution)

Oh, and then I noticed I had this file:

Code: Select all

$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
#-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
# xorg.conf file
#
# Generated by make-xorg-conf sometime around Thu Dec 5 02:25:01 EST 2019
#
# If you want to save customizations, delete the line above or this
# file will get automatically deleted on the next live boot.
#
# Command line parameters: --output=/etc/X11/xorg.conf vesa
#-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "vesa"
EndSection
I didn't put it there! must have come installed... should I remove it?

EDIT: I think I must have run that make-xorg-conf script ignorantly when I first was having issues. Sorry about that. I moved the /etc/X11/xorg.conf to .bak and tried those steps again. Same errors doing Xorg :1 -configure.

Hi

EDIT AFTER POST 49

post 45 vga shows up as 1680x1050 which is pretty good.
number 3 no graphics....can you confirm you have intel xserver package installed...edit....might be the kernel parameter see post 49

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep intel
should get a hit for xserver-xorg-video-intel

EDIT and

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep xserver-xorg-core
so we get the libglx.so

I am concerned that you show ....Driver "vesa"
and the log shows ....."/root/xorg.conf.new"

this means ....you did not put the new xorg into /etc/X11 and that may explain why your log is showing modprobe errors

then I noticed...failed to notice earlier that you are using kernel 5.4.0-antix.1-amd64-smp and yes that is what you used post 31.

Is there any reason why you can not try kernel = 4.19.0-6-amd64?
Did you want me to post the output of xrandr from the live stick?
No not at this stage.....I think 1680-1050 exceeds what you wanted to we know your card is capable of good resolutions.

post 46
I didn't put it there! must have come installed... should I remove it?
yes please.

now the attachment to post 46 does NOT say you are using /etc/X11/xorg.conf
which is not what I was expecting.

therefore I will wait to see your reasons for using that kernel,
I am tempted to say....if you want a higher kernel to use the liquorix kernel

but first we must get your xorg to use intel.....which will then load i915

its UGLY.....but delete that /etc/X11/xorg.conf
delete any mention of i915 kernel parameter
keep the 20-intel conf file
look at your xorg and see if Xorg log shows intel
-----thats our first aim

I know this might be frustrating for you.
It might take a number of reboots with and without various kernel parameters
and yes I still do not know why your intel video card does not want to play fair.

I know you will say you have done these before....but I want you to do them with my kernel.

PS I have download liquorix and will post my test of that shortly

OK so now I have removed my /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and using kernel parameter i915.modeset=0 borks the loading of plymouth splash so I can not get to a GUI login on either my normal kernel or the liqzuorix kernel......good to know

so this confirms your post 46 steps 2 and 3.

so I amend my request to

remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /root/xorg.conf*
keep /etc/xorg.conf.d/X11/20-intel.conf
either have no kernel parameter (boot code) or later try i915.modeset=1

with the goal of getting inxi -Gxxx to show intel as the driver rather than modesetting.

this means ....you did not put the new xorg into /etc/X11 and that may explain why your log is showing modprobe errors
Me too, but it looks like the Xorg -configure generates that on-the-fly.
I tried deleting /root/xorg.conf.new and double checked my /etc/X11 was clean (how I noticed the rouge xorg.conf that was in there) and made sure /root was clean too.
Rerunning the command yielded the same messagges (and a new /root/xorg.conf.new).
this means ....you did not put the new xorg into /etc/X11 and that may explain why your log is showing modprobe errors
I couldn't put the "new xorg conf" into /etc/X11 as the Xorg -configure step failed to generate one. Well, it did generate /root/xorg.conf.new - and uses it too apparently, but exited with errors - which is what would happen if I copied that xorg.conf into /etc/X11 and tried rebooting.
I could copy the assumed to be broken generated /root/xorg.conf.new over to /etc/X11 and reboot in any case if you like,...?
then I noticed...failed to notice earlier that you are using kernel 5.4.0-antix.1-amd64-smp and yes that is what you used post 31.

Is there any reason why you can not try kernel = 4.19.0-6-amd64?
I tried all the kernel I could download as far back as I could. I *think* I tried the same one that shipped with MX 18.3 (any place that documents exactly which kernel 18.3 ships with? I had to go off of hear-say on forums...)

I will try those exact steps again on 4.19.0-6-amd64 kernel.

EDIT: OK, so I did try kernel 4.19.0-6 already, but it looks like I installed 4.19.0-6-amd64-unsigned by mistake. I used synaptic to install 4.19.0-6-amd64, which also removed 4.19.0-6.amd64-unsigned.
I rebooted and took off the i915.modeset kernel param for a clean boot.... no graphics at all ie, just a command prompt (although I think this is due to the 20-intel.conf - if I remove that I probably get 640x480 resolution - that has been my experience so far - 640x480 or nothing...)
I've just realised I forgot to try with i915.modeset=0 for the 4.19.0-6-amd64 kernel... I'll try that too.
I'll also try booting up with i915.modeset=1 for the 4.19-6-amd64 kernel and see if I get better graphics (ie, transparency, which I get on the live USB, would indicate some improvement...).

EDIT2: OK, so here is the results
1. 4.19.0-6.amd64 kernel with no kernel params, and the 20-intel.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ <--> no graphics on boot, Xorg :1 -configure fails (see xorg.configure.txt)
2. 4.19.0-6.amd64 kernel with i915.modeset=0, and the 20-intel.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ <--> no grahpics on boot, Xorg :1 -configure failes (see xorg.configure2.txt)
3. 4.19.0-6.amd64 kernel with i915.modset=1, and the 20-intel.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ <--> grahpics is OK (same as on kernel 5.x) but not as nice looking as the live USB graphics.

Also, I'm still having a complete graphics crash from time to time (not every day, but weekly) and requires full powercycle to come right).
So to clarify, even with the i915.modeset=1 on the 5.x kernel, I get graphics locking up from time to time AND on the live USB I have seen the graphics freeze (but not garbled) and lock up. In both cases I have to just power off - I couldn't even switch to a virtual terminal with Alt+F2 etc...
So something is up.

I'm wondering, since it doesn't seem to be a kernel issue, is it the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver? Can I try a different version of that one and see if it helps? I can never recall how to do this in synaptic or apt-get.... I could google it I guess....

hi
Well, it did generate /root/xorg.conf.new
I really think you need to re-read post 44 step 5.
that should have used root powers to move your generated file and rename it from /root to /etc/X11
then you do a full reboot.

I am guessing you read the screen which says you can try out the file at /root by running the Xorg command with the -config (file) command
and I was trying to evade/avoid that.
I've just realised I forgot to try with i915.modeset=0 for the 4.19.0-6-amd64 kernel... I'll try that too
No post 49 says do not attempt as I duplicated your graphics bork.

You can either have no kernel parameter at boot loader stage.....or i915.modeset=1

No post 49 says do not attempt as I duplicated your graphics bork.

You can either have no kernel parameter at boot loader stage.....or i915.modeset=1
So I did exactly this:
1. boot up with no i915.modeset=0
2. I get no grahpics at all
3. sudo su
4. Xorg :1 -configure # exactly what you asked - I didn't do X -configure or anything like that...
5. Saw that it a) generates and uses /root/xorg.conf.new (I cleaned the /root dir to be sure) and b) terminated with errors
6. I did not copy the faulty /root/xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf because I didn't see the point.

I did also the above with i915.modeset parameter removed entirely...

I'm going to go ahead and try the /root/xorg.conf.new that Xorg :1 -configure generates despite the errors, and post again the exact steps and the output from each step.

EDIT: OK, so in booting up without a kernel parameter, getting no graphics at all, I tried Xorg :1 -configure (as I have done many times now), and it failed with the same errors. I copied over the /root/xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf in any case and rebooted. (see shell-session-no-kernel-param.txt). Then, I booted up with the i915.modeset=1 kernel param, and tried again. This time, stopping lightdm first, then generating the xorg conf via Xorg :1 -configure (which still had errors but more encouraging messages asking me to "test the generated xorg conf at /root/xorg.conf.new"). I copied this over to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and rebooted.

Here is the output from inxi -Gxxx with this /etc/X11/xorg.conf that was generated by Xorg :1 -configure:

heck with are up to page 6 I have failed you.

I am now thinking .....don't bother redoing current stuff.

download 18.3
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-lin ... Snapshots/

Make an usb stick assuming you have a spare.....boot it and then do a clean install onto another usb stick. I assume you know how to do that.
Do not copy any of your MX 19 home dir files onto usb stick please.....no interference.

assuming you then can duplicate post 1 OP....
On MX Linux 18.3, everything worked out of the box
we know you never knew about kernel parameter....not sure if you used or did not use a grub resolution.
we know you are likely to get 1280x1024 and maybe ideally 1920x1080?

then post from that 18.3
your current Xorg log
your current inxi -Gxxx
the filenames in /etc/X11
the filenames in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

I am pretty sure you did not at 18.3 stage play with 20-intel.conf or create an xorg.conf, so just filenames will suffice.
Of course if you do find that you do have a special file....attach please.

I am tempted to ask for you to also attach a text file of your packages on 18.3

Code: Select all

dpkg -l > dpkg183.txt
there is a way of installing a new distro with old dpkg list.....but lets first see how far we get

Good luck

https://sourceforge.net/projects/mx-lin ...

Good luck
I'll give it a go.

EDIT: I'm having trouble installing from the live USB (2GB) onto another USB (32GB). The installer is only offering my internal drives. I don't want to blow either of them away... Do I need to use some other tool to install a system on my 32GB USB?

Do I need to use some other tool to install a system on my 32GB USB?
on your mx19 install....boot up with the "target" usb not inserted
after boot up insert new usb
then run

Code: Select all

sudo gparted
pulldown and select 32G usb.....I think this is safer as you won't be confused which usb to choose.

and format it as fat32
reboot with target usb not inserted until your mx18 is booted
insert fresh formatted usb
hopefully it should now appear as an option...in the pulldown choices?

MX 18.3 graphics were amazing!
Visually very appealing.
The clock is transparent on the desktop instead of a box around it.

I would like to switch back (just kidding).

Hi

you have an xorg.conf please attach it.

Is 18.3.....the new usb system rock stable? any glitches?

and it looks like you may be using uxa
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
and because you have no 20-intel file.....me thinks you have it in your xorg.conf

However....you have succeeded....on 18.3 where I failed to get your 19 to have intel as the driver
which is a big ticket, with 1680x1050

disappointment is your grub2 veinfo said you could get 1920.....aaah well this is a good start.

do not over write your original mx 18 usb stick that you used.....to create this one please.
I am tempted to see if we can do an upgrade instead of a clean install.
but unfortunately I still want to see your xorg.conf......and where did you get it from please?

below are a few modelines we may look later.....to compare on 19

Attached the xorg.conf
xorg.conf.mx18.txt
- I didn't get it from anywhere. It is just there.... and to clarify, I did an install of MX 18.3 without any special config. Just set the timezone and stuff during the install wizard, that's it.

Also, just now, I've seen my graphics frazzle even before grub2 loads - so the freezing/glitching could be completely unrelated (perhaps my graphics is on the fritz).
Power off and waiting 10 seconds or so unplugged resolves the issue.
I have not seen the freezing or garbled frazzled graphics on MX 18.3 to date (including the USB install I've done now).

Ok fair enough I must have forgot they enclosed an xorg.conf

request 1
reboot with a # so the line reads
#Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
on 18.3......no need to post the log......you have posted your inxi....does it go higher?

request 2
copy that xorg.....with or without the # into mx19 and full reboot to see if it improves things please.
at this stage....no need to post log....you will know what you are seeing etc

I've tried request 2, and yielded no difference. I just gave a visual inspection though, didn't check the logs (oh, and still had the kernel param i915.modeset=1... I should try see if I can lose that now).

I'm off to bed now, but will try request 1 some time tomorrow.

Yes, but even before that, it was as soon as I turned it on before the BIOS splash screen there is another screen "Asus speedgate". It was the Asus speedgate that grabled. Pattern was the same as when it happens on the OS.
Only seen this singe installing MX19.

Yeah, I saw some settings as I was fiddling with some BIOS opts. Sadly, I did this fiddling some time at the same time as installing MX19, but I put the changes back when I was experiencing issues. Also MX18 still works on my current (hopefully restored) BIOS settings.

I was going to bump up the graphics mem, but was causious about it as I only have 4GB of RAM total. My PC is pretty old, hence why I wanted something real lightweight like MX (does a great job btw without looking crappy which is nice).

I'll try bump up the graphics mem (I think I too have the max shared mem option), maybe that's all it is...

try and find a bios setting and turn it off then retest?

2) Would you be interested in installing 18.3 on internal drive
do apt holds on your xorg type packages
changing your repo and doing an update of the others to 19x?

Sorry to butt in, and I haven't read the entire thread, but I have a suggestion to try.

1. First, create a personal snapshot of your current installed system and save it. That way you can easily restore everything to its current state and no harm done.

2. Boot from your original MX-19 installation live USB but hit F5 at the boot menu and enable persist_root. Also press F8 and select save.

3. Do whatever magic you did in your original post to get that 1920x1440 resolution on the live USB.

4. Run MX Tools/MX RemasterCC and remaster the live USB to write your changes into the squash file system that it will install from. Reboot from the USB when its finished and verify that you still have that resolution.

5. Reinstall MX, re-using the existing partitions and preserving /home and reusing your home directory. For good measure, also check the checkbox in the installer to save Live USB changes.

If that happens to fix it, ¡bueno! If not, run Live USB Maker, burn your snapshot to a USB stick and reinstall your existing system the same way, using existing partitions, preserving home and reusing your home directory to put everything back to the way it is now.

It' s worth a try. *shrug*

Thanks JayM.
To clarify, I got good res (not certain if it was 1920x1440, or jush 1680x15050) out of the box on the USB... no magic. HOWEVER, I ended up having to boot the USB up in fail safe graphics mode due to some glitch in my graphics (kept freezing during install).
Would those settings somehow have got embedded somewhere on my install because they were set whilst booting off the live USB?

If so, then it sounds like I should try reinstall MX19 without booting into failsafe mode. It's possible the glitching graphics was due to BIOS and I think that issue maybe fixed... so hopefully will get through the install if I try again.

At this stage, doing a fresh install is somewhat undesirable as I've already reinstalled most my apps and it's a bit of a pain.

Yeah, I've tried turning it off already. It takes a few seconds longer to boot because of the "slow"gate... didn't seem to make any difference though. I put it back to rule out BIOS changes.

Sounds like some form of fresh install (either 18.3 or 19) is the next step... I may not do that. I could try installing MX 19 onto USB perhaps first? If it was just because of doing the install with failsafe graphics on, then I could verify that easy enough. Maybe I could then take a diff of my root and see what is different between the installs...

@JayM and OP

OP has asked you a question or two but let me re-confirm that
at post 52 and post 56 OP has only achieved resolution past the bootup screen of
1680x1050

Secondly I tried to find out about the Asus speedgate....a quick search was not helpful but I wonder if the type of cable being used by OP makes a diff?
manual is here
https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/s ... T-M_LX.zip

Manual alleges max res 2048x1536 page ix
Manual page ix also claims GPU is max of 1G shared.....but OP can only see 256?
Manual page 50 confirmed max 256

Interestingly....OP reports issues with Asus speedgate.....but if he means.....Express gate.....that looks like firmware.....that could be the source of the problem as hinted by this post 2 and post 9
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums ... s-gate-os/

Manual page 13 claims express gate can
"instantly access the internet and key applications before entering the Windows (TradeMark) OS
OP....read page 58....I am pretty sure you need to set the express timer countdown to 1 sec......this might be the reason you saw a slowness?
and can you confirm you are using a shielded VGA cable because my eyesight can not spot a HDMI connector on this motherboard?
Manual page 10 says you have only VGA

Ok, so here is what I've found:

Installing MX 19 onto USB works no problem.

Initially, I had an issue where my screen froze, so I went into the BIOS, reset to factory settings, turned off ASUS Express Gate (sorry, I put speed gate on accident), bumped up gfx mem and tried installing onto usb again.

Finally, success.

There is a small chance I got lucky, and the install finished before the freeze. OR, I had some funky settings in BIOS contributing to that.

At this stage, I am prepared to try fresh install preserving /home on my HDD. BUT before I do that, I want to diff my usb and my current system. I'm assuming that when I installed MX19 under failsafe graphics mode, I somehow baked some weird graphics settings deep down in the image... is that jumping to conclusions? Let me know of specific places to look if any come to mind.
Should I set /home to point to my HDD on the USB install and boot off of USB again to see if all is well? I guess there is still a chance something in /home is screwing this up...

1) diff file system to see if any obvious differences in /etc and other places
2) set /home of USB install to my HDD /home partition to see if that makes any differences
3) maybe freshly install MX 19 again onto HDD, but this time not in failsafe graphics mode

Let me know your thoughts on 1), 2), and 3).
I'm off to bed though for the night. Will take a look tomorrow.

aptik-gtk can make a "snapshot" of your installed apps. Save its results in a subdirectory inside your home directory, then after reinstalling just install aptik-gtk again and restore.

turned off ASUS Express Gate

I thought you said you found slowness in turning if off in the past?

I never had to install 18.3 in failsafe mode. First time I tried that was installing MX19.
Posts 54-56 cover my MX 18.3 install. I did not mention in any of the posts that I never entered failsafe graphics mode. So to clarify, I did a normal boot of MX18.3 live usb and normal install to USB and then normal boot from installed USB without any kernel parameters. Everything normal as of out of the box.

Post 67 I mention I'm about to try MX 19 install onto USB and post 69 I confirm that it works (didn't have to go into failsafe graphics mode BUT did experience issues with freezing during install until reverting to factory BIOS settings).

Re ASUS express gate, I find it slow booting up (a few seconds delay - can set to one second of course). I've disabled it now. I see no difference to anything whether enabled or disabled.

Ok, here is what I have done since my last post:

1. Copied the initrd.img (4.19.0-6) from the working MX19 USB install to /boot, keeping the original as a backup.
2. Reboot.
3. Edited the grub bootloader to remove the i915.modset=1 parameter.
4. Everything is working fine.
5. Edited the /etc/default/grub to remove the addition of i915.modset as it's no longer needed.
6. Reboot.
7. Automatically boots into 4.19.0-6

That was a bit of a hack, so I checked that installing new kernels works.... it did not.
Installing 5.4 and 4.4 linux resulted in no graphics when booting into either of them.
Also, update-initramfs broke the working (copied from the USB install of MX19) initramfs.

Doing a diff of /usr/lib, I found this file on my original HDD MX19 install, but not on the USB install:

Code: Select all

$ cat /usr/lib/modprobe.d/no-mode-set.conf
#-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
# file: /lib/modprobe.d/no-mode-set.conf
# disble modesetting in the following modules
#-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

options i915 modeset=0
The smoking gun.
So every kernel image I install is doomed to not work, and update-initramfs is always going to add i915.modset=0 to the kernel params.

My conclusion is that the no-mode-set.conf file was installed to the system due to booting the live USB in failsafe graphics mode.
This may or may not be a bug, depending how you look at it.

I commented the line in the file to look like this:

Code: Select all

$ cat /usr/lib/modprobe.d/no-mode-set.conf
#-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
# file: /lib/modprobe.d/no-mode-set.conf
# disble modesetting in the following modules
#-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

#options i915 modeset=0
Rebooting into 4.4.19.0-6 worked fine - no modifications to kernel params.

Installed 5.4 linux kernel and that works too.

Sorry for the wild goose chase.

Thanks to all of you for helping. I never would have solved the problem if I hadn't tried installing MX19 to USB.

In conclusion, it looks like these things caused the issues:

1) mucking with BIOS settings (caused the install to freeze after a few minutes - didn't hit this on MX 18.3 install though)
2) doing install from failsafe boot of live USB to work around issue encountered due to 1) leaves /lib/modprobe.d/no-mode-set.conf file which sets i915.modeset=0 for all kernel images.

IMHO:
  • It's interesting that MX18.3 didn't seem to be affected by my BIOS changes.
  • It's an open question in my mind as to whether /lib/modprobe.d/no-mode-set.conf should be included in the initramfs as there is a valid use case for completing a normal install from failsafe mode. For example, in the past I've found that sometimes live USBs don't work on graphics cards from ATI/nVidia, but a full install has all the things needed (or one can install them via apt or from proprietary driver install scripts supplied by the vendors) to work without needing failsafe graphics. Not sure it always makes sense to bake the failsafe graphics options into the initramfs (and all future created initramfs), but then again, on a system that does need these options permanently, I guess that is the desired behaviour...
Again thanks to you all for helping. It's greatly appreciated.

If this is (finally, whew!) working can you edit your first post #1 using its pencil icon and add [SOLVED] to the subject? Thanks.

Yep congrats on getting there but
cat /usr/lib/modprobe.d/no-mode-set.conf
I would have thought I might have this raw file.....to be copied into /lib/modprobe.d/
but I have no such file on MX19 hd install.

It may be that some script is being called to generate the raw file before putting a copy into lib/modprob.d?

But now I get this when trying to load a game I would play on MX 18.3 just fine:
What about libwine:i386 libwine
See https://wiki.debian.org/Wine#line-30

Perhaps 32-bit libGL.so files (needed for some games)?
libgl1-mesa-glx:i386

I guess you get it when you boot up in failsafe mode on the live usb and install from there.
My guess is the failsafe mode adds that conf to the /lib/modprobe.d of the live system to be "safe", and then this gets baked into the hdd install.
So if you didn't get that file on your install, it's not surprising as you probably did not install from failsafe mode.

I didn't do any of the thumb drive installs from fail safe mode. So that's why I never got that file on those installs.
