If the OP is interested in MX USB maker, antiX is worth a try.
antiX uses a 4.9 kernel as its default, which is probably why it works on that system and MX doesn't. Not to fault the 4.19 series of kernels, they work fine on most computers and are a fairly new kernel, but 4.9 plays nicer on some older or lower-spec hardware.

I opted to running my snapshot in virtual box and downgrade the kernel to 14.4...i think. I then installed AMD drivers. I then created a snapshot of the VM and surprise surprise. I successfully installed MX on the HP computer in question and it runs flawlessly. A bit of a round about way but it did the job
