Looked like some scaffolding was around the spire, was this some kind of construction caused fire?

We don't know as of yet what the cause is. The scaffolding has been there for a while since work was being done on it. Likely restoration work.

The worst is we don't even know if people were inside.. :( It was a popular location, the weather was nice.. so... yeah..

Restoration work, but basically not with enough precautions. It's sad.

The building was already in poor shape, with cracks in the upper parts. I only hope the pompiers can save the rose window perhaps, since the fire started in the East end.

Devastating. Lit a candle for my deceased Mother there in 1995. I am very sad.

UNESCO ready to 'save and restore' Notre-Dame

The United Nations' cultural agency, which is based in Paris, said Monday that it "stood at France's side to save and restore" the cathedral, describing it as "a priceless heritage".

Audrey Azoulay, secretary general of UNESCO, said the agency was monitoring the effort to put out the blaze, which has consumed the iconic church's spire as flames spread across the roof.

It's looking really bad. The next hour and a half is crucial, firefighters say.

Crucial as to what can be saved, if the building can be saved or not.

Just learned from someone who reported: Now the northern bell tower is on fire and could collapse. Firefighters say they may not be able to save the building.

I am waiting to see where she got that news from.

From a New Zealand source.

Structure of Notre-Dame has been saved from total destruction, say French firefighter officials

The loss is devastating for everyone. I've recently been studying the period around the time the cathedral was begun. I'm trying to put this into some historical perspective, if my mind doesn't fail me. When work started on the cathedral, the first Plantagenet king, Henry II of England, was on the throne and already married to Eleanor of Aquitaine for a few years. Their son Richard I (the Lionheart) was about 6 years old or so. Henry was already fussing with Becket, as well. Louis VII was king in France (Capetian, I think). Crusades were kicking into high gear.

When it was completed the first Valois was on the throne of France (Phillipe, I believe). Edward III was on the throne of England and the Hundred Years War had just gotten under way. The cathedral had seen so much and meant so much to so many. This is a sad, sad day. It's irreplaceable.

From a more temporal and personal perspective, I was there with my parents and sister in 1959... Happy times.

Today it seems it as George Harrison said: "All things must pass"( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPTHem2iu0A )

News here showed some statues that had been moved just days back in preparation for work. One hopes much was removed where possible during the initial emergency response.

Lots of work and renewal for the craft of masonry and construction which should offer a long term positive, unfortunate as the major structural loss has been. I am guessing Notre Dame has been laser scanned, painted, photographed, filmed and measured far more than most structures and this will be an immense hep in restoring and rebuilding.

The bells are going to recast - not sure if that was already planned - but those bells are not too old, during the French Revolution Notre Dame's bells
were melted down to make cannon balls

I will probably not find any new friends with it, but despite the slight consternation I feel for Notre Dame, I have another thought as well...

If humanity were only half as shocked by the destruction of our planet as by the partial (...and repairable) destruction of a building and only half of them were willing to put things back in order as with Notre Dame, the world would be a much better place and the future much brighter than it currently is.

Unfortunately, nature seems too omnipresent to influence human reactions in such a way.

Hopefully they can do a great job of rebuilding it. I hope just as much that it recalls people to what the building stood for, religion is fading in much of Europe, and America is not far behind. Notre Dame was not just a building, but a powerful idea, part of a spiritual structure as well as a physical one. Perhaps some good will come out of this tragedy.

It's part of all our heritage.. one that millions enjoyed.

I am very glad to hear that it's going to be rebuilt. It's gonna take years though :(

Oh wow.. just found this elsewhere. The poster states:

As a gamer, I found it awesome that a lot of the laser scans and modeling files that were used to create Assassin's Creed will be helpful in the restoration.

I once read a story once about a guy on an Italian field trip with his classmates. They were wandering around the plazas and had gotten lost. This kid stops, looks at his surroundings, and takes off. He leads his class through back alleys and little thoroughfares until a few minutes later they're back where they needed to be. And his teacher asked him how he knew to find their way back.

The kid had played that part in Assassin's Creed. The city recreation was so faithful, he knew exactly where he needed to go.

It took two years for the game development team to get the inside and outside of the cathedral right, down to specific stones, inside and out.

Youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yUL8VGF3Lc

The article isn't talking about the in-game stuff (which is impressive), but the many assets used to create the final in-game rendering. It will be those assets that are given to help the restoration :)
