That's your whole problem. The latest MEPIS needs a bare minimum of 768MB with a practical minimum of 1024MB.

The last MEPIS I was able to install on a 512MB machine with satisfactory results was M8.

You need to bump the RAM or go with a lighter distro like antiX.

I tried antiX and it boots up and gets to a desktop OK. Thanks for all the help.

I agree with Uncle Mark that a half GB of RAM might be kind of low, but I'm curious are you able to run M11 on the same PC? I don't really find M12's RAM usage to be much different than M11's . The difference might be that M12 doesn't automatically use swap, where I think M11 did.



I think the following will enable swap on M12:

1) Add a 3 to the kernel command line to boot the M12 LiveUSB to init level 3

2) run the command below to enable swap 3) run the command below to verify that swap is now enabled 4) start kdm

I tried the swapon, but the cut command generated an error message. On the M11 installation on the PC I usually need to use LXDE in order to get the best performance. Based on this and the recommended RAM for M12 it may be best for me to use antiX. Thanks for the help.

I finally got around to installing .92, 64-bit to my Kids' laptops. Some observations:

--In installation I specify a separate /home partition, but it just doesn't happen. I need to copy the /home/user directory to the partition and add '/dev/sda3/ /home ext4 defaults,noatime 0 2' to fstab.

--A resume device is not added to GRUB. I add 'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="resume=UUID=my swapfile's UUID"' to /etc/default/grub and update-grub2

--On starting the computer or restoring from Hibernate, the wireless card is disabled, and has to be enabled in the Network Management widget; the computer's wireless button does not work to enable it. It's an Intel card.

--At least some of the screensavers never come on, although they work when the test button is pressed. These machines have a Radeon HD 2600 and compsiting is left at the default XRender. EDIT: I'm using the open-source driver

BTW, I'm using the 3.11 kernel from Backports and am having none of the hibernate/sleep issues I had with 3.9.

Now that these machines are set up, Beta 3 will probably be released tomorrow...

Update; the screensaver issue seems to be due to vibration of the table triggering the mouse, as it comes on when it's unplugged...

'fraid there are some issues with the Mepis 12 releases for some of us.

I have been using Mepis since the "Simply Mepis" book was published (2003 I think) and have been totally satisfied. I prefer KDE and the Debian base so Mepis is a good fit. It appears, however, that development of M12 is not really progressing. I don't see any news updates or postings to the contrary. The last post I saw with any comment in this regard stated that Warren was busy with projects that actually generate revenue for his company, and that is certainly understandable. Still, Debian 7 was released last May and it is beginning to look like Debain 8 could be released before M12 is released. This raises some questions in my mind:
1. Is a final stable release of M12 expected any time in the foreseeable future?
2. Is there any way to have a stable M11 with Wheezy repositories?
3. Would it be possible for someone to post regular progress updates in the forum or on mepis.org?
4. Comment, not a question: I am beginning to look for alternatives to Mepis, staying with Debian and KDE. I am taking a close look at SolydK as a possible replacement for Mepis.

The SolydK Business Edition is a very nice KDE implementation of Debian stable. The Home Edition is testing based, but very well done, too.

I too am disappointed at the lack of any further MEPIS development, but it is what it is. Moving to another distro at some future point is not that big a deal for me, but moving away from the Community and all that it entails will be a tough pill to swallow.
