I had the same experience as Eadwine with gdebi and the slack deb. I ended up installing with the thunar menu item. It migh just be that particular deb.

If you selected sda2, then it is doing what you ask.
But if you don't want to overwrite your Mate Mint, you should select a different partition.
For example you could but both / and and /home on sda3 for example if it is big enough. (or other partition not sda1 or 2)
They you have to install grub to root (sda3 in this example) and then log into Mate/Mint and as root update-grub.
Then on next boot you should be able to select MX.
It is not clear to me. Which partition in the installer did you select for / ?On the 'Choose Partitions' I put Home to sda6. Swap is 2GB on sda1.

Error Report: using 19 Beta 2.1, I found a bug.
I enable desktop icons on my install because that's what I'm used to. Anyway, they all show up on initial install. Until I enabled x2 scaling in XFCE... As soon as I did, my Trash icon disappeared. Nothing I've tried brings it back. Toggling doesn't help. It shows as toggled on but doesn't appear on the desktop after I turned x2 on...even turning x2 scaling off doesn't bring it back...

Did you try: right-click the desktop > Desktop Settings > Icon tab, and check (or: uncheck and recheck) the Trash.

That's probably related with the browser and with addons/plugins you are using. I'm using Pale Moon, and have no issues with those sites. The functionality of antiX Advert Blocker has nothing to do with your browser or how your browser does warn or block sites. I might misunderstand what you are asking? Yes, but what bookmarks are you talking about? In MX by default the only ones I see are shown in the image below.

which do display the sources of the blocker-rules, and does call those sources "bookmarks".

I figured out what was up with my panel height being constrained by the size of my netbook's monitor: Settings/Displays wasn't configured to automatically detect new monitors when they're connected. I think this should be enabled by default to prevent lots of future help requests re: dual monitors when people encounter the same thing I did, unless there's a reason not to enable monitor detection as a default setting. Anyway, both monitors' resolutions are now appearing in QSI and the panel size is full-height on my external monitor and survives a logout/login:
Now I have something else going on with the display: when I expand apps to their full size they still seem to be constrained by the resolution of the netbook's monitor as they refuse to fill the entire 1280x1020 external screen. Here are Firefox and Thunar open and both supposedly full-screen:
If I disable the netbook's monitor in Settings/Display all apps actually fill the external monitor's screen (exept for where the panel is) as they should do. When I re-enable the netbook's monitor they go back to the same behavior of refusing to be full-screen. Note that the external 1280x1020 monitor is selected as my primary display. I looked in Settings/Window Manager and Window Manager Tweaks and didn't see anything that looked as though it would help this issue. I'm wondering if this is a bug in Xfce 4.14 where the window manager isn't respecting the primary display selection in settings, or if it's just the way 4.14 works and there's an option or setting that I haven't found yet that corrects it.
As soon as I disable the netbook's monitor I get full-sized apps when they're maximized, and as soon as I re-enable it they're all smaller when I click on the + in the upper-right to maximize them. So it has something to do with either the DE or WM not playing nicely with dual monitors of different sizes, still. BTW I don't get this behavior in MX-18.3.
I can already tell that when MX-19 is officially released I'm going to be a newbie all over again for a few weeks or so.
