random horizontal lines....have never seen this on any other web-site
It's true you can't find it on other forums, not on the phpBB forum either. Can't be a software bug (because no one else has it) - just a matter of configuration. We can trust peregrine to fix it or we can help her doing it, by trying to figure out what's wrong.

I don't see any horizontal lines when zooming - makes me suspect that it is an X server config/display res config that is causing this - what dpi are you using (see Mepis X Assistant) and what resolution is you xorg.conf showing + what is the native resolution of your monitor (if LCD/TFT). Any resolution conflicts (i.e. scaling 1024x768 to fit a 1280x1024 monitor) may have knock-on effects when using browser zoom.

Using chrome. They appear (very faint for me) at 119%, but disappear at 143% - presets using ctrl + scroll. In opera they do not appear. In firefox they appear and are very visible.

Back to the "side scroll" error:
Have you tried fixed width?
As I've forgotten what version is used, here are links for both prosilver and subsilver:
http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article/fixed-width-prosilver/
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... &t=1570255
As text wraps, this should prevent thanks from making the page longer.
Don't know anything about this at all, but the code seems simple and if we are very lucky, it will also take care of horizontal lines (pure speculation).

You may be on to something there. I just took a look at a windows box using Firefox, and could not get it to produce the lines. I do experience them on both my home PC as well as my laptop (the ones in my sig). 2 different versions of Mepis, both using Nvidia drivers installed with smxi, one at 1280x1024 and the other at 1680x1050. On my home PC I use IceWeasel, and the notebook uses IceCat. Checking my Debian server here at work, I do not experience the lines either, a Lenny system with a Diamond Stealth III video card. And I just fired up my portable install of 8.5 on a USB drive using an HP box with Intel graphics, and I didn't experience any lines either. So for me it seems to be tied to the Nvidia graphics.

OK I just saw a very faint line through each post near the top. I never noticed it before because it is so faint, and I have to get very close to the LCD to see it. It is only there at 120% zoom. I am using Google Chrome.
