Cannot find any info on installing Brave or any other browser. Firefox on my system is a resource hog and would like to replace it with one that may be faster if there is one. Please advise. Thanks!

Use the Popular Applications tab of the Package Installer to choose from (I think) 11 other browsers.

To help you in the future, the User Manual contains the information you needed to find this, and a lot more.

All browsers are resource hogs especially if you have multiple tabs open and multiple extensions installed, Chrome based browsers are actually heavier in my experience...

Don't think Brave is available for 32bit.

A quick mem consumption check an freshly booted ISO MX-23.6 32bit:
with installed browser from listed entries with MXPI->Pop.Apps->Browser:

Code: Select all

sudo ps_mem.py | grep -E 'firefox|palemoon|chromium|falkon'
112.8 MiB + -209.5 KiB = 112.5 MiB	palemoon
128.4 MiB + 22.2 MiB = 150.5 MiB	falkon
213.4 MiB + 78.4 MiB = 291.8 MiB	firefox-esr (8)
129.0 MiB + 179.1 MiB = 308.1 MiB	chromium (9)
267.5 MiB + 69.0 MiB = 336.6 MiB	firefox-bin (9)

and on a 64bit MX installation, manually additionally installed mullvad-browser:

Code: Select all

sudo ps_mem.py | grep -iE 'librewolf|firefox|mullvadbrowser|palemoon|chromium'
145.0 MiB + 1.2 MiB = 146.2 MiB	palemoon
277.1 MiB + 81.3 MiB = 358.4 MiB	mullvadbrowser.real (8)
285.7 MiB + 91.7 MiB = 377.4 MiB	firefox-esr (8)
232.5 MiB + 222.2 MiB = 454.7 MiB	chromium (10)
376.0 MiB + 102.8 MiB = 478.8 MiB	firefox-bin (9)
401.5 MiB + 100.6 MiB = 502.1 MiB	librewolf (9)
All with empty or nearly empty start/blank page.Palemoon therefore seems to use less memory than most others.
I missed to install falkon on 64bit, though.

Brave browser is such a resource hog. When I use the Bleachbit app after browsing the internet, I notice that if I use Brave browser, it has about 3 to 4 times more cache to clean that Firefox. I tried other browsers, but Firefox seems to work best with just about all websites. I have used Seamonkey, Icecat, Opera, Vivaldi, Libre Wolf, etc, etc. All those other browsers seem to have some quirk that I can't log into some sites. But Firefox always works. ( knock on wood )

brave is indeed not available for 32bit systems,

but I wonder, why u use a 32bit os with a 64bit grafic card ...

I read about brave in this forum some time ago.
Since then, I replaced firefox and I the only usecase where I stil use firefox is watching videos in fullscreen.
Videoplayer of brave does not support a video window resized to 3 monitors.

respect to resource hog:
When I start brave, it tells me, that it saved me 6,6 GB downloading rubbish and saved me 3,5 hours waiting for bull.sh.it ...

You can get brave from: https://brave.com/linux/

P.S.: I replaced the browser of my mobile phone and use brave too

Better not believe that info. When using Brave use these settings https://www.privacyguides.org/en/deskto ... ers/#brave and UBO and a whole lot of crap wont be downloaded.
And https://www.kuketz-blog.de/einstellungen/#brave-desktop

UBO https://www.privacyguides.org/en/browse ... ock-origin

For FF https://www.privacyguides.org/en/deskto ... s/#firefox
https://www.kuketz-blog.de/brave-und-fi ... er-teil-2/

Better not use Bleachbit.

HP 2000 Notebook Laptop AMD E-450 1.65GHz 4GB RAM

You need upgrade RAM to 8gb
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEaTV2LYX5Q

Modern lite browser is Firefox ESR 115. i think
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/desktop-esr/

This CPU spec better stay with MX 21.x supported until June 2026

I don't really use Pale Moon anymore. Nothing wrong with the browser, but they had some problems with Cloudflare tightening the screws and thus making life more difficult for small browsers.
I didn't like their move to AVX, because I think their biggest strength is low-end computers. They have a unique advantage being single process and consuming less RAM because of it. Now, because of AVX they have higher minimum required specs than Chrome and company. Doesn't make sense to me. I'll keep it installed as long as SSE2 builds are available.

Since I compile Pale Moon from source code for our repositories, the packages in MX main are all SSE2. You have to upgrade to the AVX build in the test repo to get that feature (i.e., just upgrade the amd64 palemoon from test). This also means I have been able to provide i386, armhf, and arm64 native builds, which are no longer supported by the official Pale Moon binaries.

Ungoogled-chromium, when used with antiX / MX ad blocker (a hosts file so no ads are downloaded, less cache to clear) is every bit as nimble and quick as any browser. I use it instead of Brave now. I played with Midori as well, but it's still got issues and lacks features.

Mybe the following question relates also to this topic of Browsers:
What and how many browsers to use for privacy compartmentalization? For example
- Chromium for gmail, google translate, youtube
- librewolf for other websites accounts, apart Google, like forum.mxlinux.org
- maybe another browser for browsing the internet, or it is not necessary (can be used one of the above)?

Don't you use Youtube, or Gmail? Maybe one can get rid of Gmail, but Youtube? This is a hard one.

If you have cookies removed at close of browser, use something like ublock origin and dont log into anything before going to youtube it is now horrible. (And no, some of us RARELY go on youtube at all - and only for some music.)

However, if you really want to take control... have a look at this page

There are a lot to learn on Youtube, not only linux. I activated Adblock from Settings and use for this forum Librewolf (with Strict and delete cookies when out). Still need to install here ublock origin extension? It is better to open Youtube with another browser, say for example Brave, or can I open it in Librewolf, even if I'm logged in this forum? I assume that I should not log in Gmail account with this laptop to not get fingerprint associated with my external iP address (it's dinamic, but anyways).
Thanks for the advice and the link.

You can definitely run a private window or secondary web browser. I use firefox, and delete everything when I close it ( and I dont browse longer than around 10 or so sites unless I close it and kill everything ( this forum excluded) .

But often I use new private window to isolate and open something too (amazon, or another 'invasive' shop etc) . There are quite a few methods you can use to lose trackers and history's.

I almost never use Youtube directly, I use LibRedirect but since Youtube's been at battle with everyone (UBO, etc.), LibRedirect is not nearly as functional as it used to be as I have to keep "Shift+Alt+L" – To switch to a different instance and it's not nearly as good as it was.
Additionally, invidious instances are down to about 6 (with maybe only 2 two working) whereas they used to have maybe 3 dozen or more.

One thing that usually works when all else fails is pasting the invidious url inside Freetube.

https://api.invidious.io/?sort_by=version
https://redirect.invidious.io/ There is another similar youtube fronted.
https://libredirect.github.io/docs.html
https://alternativeto.net/software/invidious/
https://github.com/pluja/awesome-privac ... d-managers

Search for youtube frontends, I have over a dozen YT alternatives or frontends bookmarked.
Search Privacy guides, EFF, etc.
Haven't tried farside yet.

To update Freetube flatpak:

Code: Select all

flatpak update io.freetubeapp.FreeTube
Cheers

Thank you, Charles. I installed Freetube from .deb file. It's great. There are on Freetube all my subscriptions from Youtube. I think I can get rid of Youtube, finally. No adds, to tracking, @runwiththedolphin is there, great. Just, I can't figure how to write comments. I see people commenting there, but there is no reply button.

Yes, and sorry to say there goes Freetube too, since it's buggy, not all videos are working. I rejoiced to soon. Now I gave up after trying all the Local API and Invidious API instances BULL!!!T, that doesn't work. Back to Youtube. I think I will do the browser compartmentalization: Youtube, Gmail, Amazon on chromium or brave, internet browsing and forum on librewolf, and call it a day.

Possibly try these, but yes YT does win a few rounds.
Current instance will be randomized on startup.

Image

Ex. this link states: https://inv.nadeko.net/feed/popular
"This instance is not available due to the recent youtube changes made (again) near to 2025-04-28 at ~03:00 UTC" just today.

And two 1/2's of a YT wack-a-mole :attention: :hitoverhead: do not = 1 wack-a-mole smiley.

EDIT using v0.23.4 Beta of flatpack, but they do lag a little.

Cheers!

I have the same version v0.23.4 but it is .deb file from freetube site, see screenshot

It doesn't work neither with your settings, nor with other invidious instances, see settings screenshots and error screenshots

I tried all the above invidious instances and they all give me the above errors. :bawling: I also changed the region from US to Germany and UK, the same result. https://inv.nadeko.net/feed/popular also doesn't work. Maybe it works installed from flatpaks, but I have enough trying, I will stay with youtube in chromium, works great.
Thanx anyway.

You could run top or htop in a terminal to see what's eating the CPU cycles.

Only happens when surfing, when Falkon or Firefox aren't running CPU usage is very low....
