XFCE 4.20 Update --> Locales not 100% correct

Hi,
Today I updated my system from XFCE 4.18 to 4.20, and found out that many structures changed from my locale which is es_UY.UTF-8, to english.
I verified that the MX locales is correctly configured (to es_UY.UTF-8).
Which "structures" changed to english?:
- Whisker menu, "Favorites" "Recently used" and "All Applications" should be shown as "Favoritos" "Usados recientemente" and "Todas las aplicaciones" respectively.
- Thunar file manager appears now in english.
- The "Logout menu", the window title and the name of all buttons.
- Many of the plugins and XFCE tools like the screenshot, keyboard shortcuts, mouse and touchpad and so on.

open terminal and run these two commands:

If not, seems your tweaked system is somehow in disorder regarding locale setup.

Thanks, so it appears all is set properly. And the translation for the example string 'Recently Used'
is also properly provided by the underlying gettext-based locale system.
But still the whisker menu shows untranlsated English strings.
So it seems we need to dig a bit deeper.
Next: Please show system-wide defined default locale with this command :
and also
What happens if you are running this command:
I guess you still have "Favorites", "Recently Used" and "All applications" in English, right?
Another test: Can you create a new user (for testing) with the tool "MX User" ,
and login as the new user. Would the whisker menu still have untranslated strings?

And something strange:
I know that the translation of the whisker menu for example is located in:
/usr/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin.mo
And if I do:
find (or) sudo find /usr/share/locale/ -type f -iname 'xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin.m[o]' I get NOTHING on the CLI output (an empty line).
But if I do:
find /usr/share/locale/ -type f -iname 'yelp.m[o]' (another file that I know exists) I get all language versions of the file.
But if i do:
locate xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin.mo I get the output which is the location with the full path of the plugins files for all languages, including of course, the "es"
UPDATE:
I did "sudo updatedb" and then tried again, but the command "locate xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin.mo" does not return ANY output.
I navigate to: /usr/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES/ and try to list the file xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin.mo and IT DOES NOT EXIST.

Oh! And to answer your question sorry:
If I create a new user and login I find the same issues as with my user, so, it seems the problem is system wide, not user level.

We didn’t push an update to whisker menu with the 4.20 updates. Maybe try the one in test repo.

Please do not set LC_ALL within /etc/default/locale, it can confuse the system in quite a number of different ways.
E.g reset with:

sudo update-locale --reset LANG=es_UY.UTF-8
LC_ALL is not meant to be set permanently.

I did reinstall the package xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin, it installed without issues.
Next, I did: "ls -nl /usr/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin.mo" and the system gave me:
"ls: no se puede acceder a '/usr/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin.mo': No such file or directory"

It's something weird:
Although I open synaptic package manager and fully uninstall "xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin" and install it again, then, to validate, after install I verify the installed files, so you can see:
But, if you do a "ls -nl /usr/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin.mo", the system answer is:
ls: no se puede acceder a '/usr/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES/xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin.mo': No such file or directory
So, synaptic tells me it is installed in that path, but ls is telling me there is no file. I am confused.

First before you do anything else do remove LC_ALL from default locale as mentioned already and do reboot.
Please confirm.
Next given that you seem to like using root/sudo on commandline, you may have wrong permssions set somehow:
show this, open terminal as normal user und run:

Besides, it is not only happening with whisker menu, but also with the other xfce4 tools (I mean power manager, notes, appfinder, clipman, display settings, session logout and so on), they all also appear in English.
As you no doubt have seen, I tried to change the default language from:
es_UY.UTF-8
to:
es_ES.UTF-8
but with no joy.

So the main issue the xfce translations seem not to get installed, or mayb get remoed during installtion:
And this command returns only an error messsage?

Maybe check you have by no other manually installed packages or in any otherway created diversions :

I have more information, I do not know if it would be of any help:
I have timeshift snapshot of the system, before updating to XFCE 4.20 (when it was ver. 4.18).
I restored it and the XFCE tools mentioned before (including whisker menu) are in spanish, I mean they are ok, full 100%. It seems the issue occurs when upgrading from xfce ver. 4.18 to 4.20
Just in case, of course, previously I also did another snapshot of the upgraded system, cause I would like to keep up with the system regular updates.
So, if you need any information regarding the state of the system before the XFCE update, please let me know. Otherwise I will proceed with the system regular updates and follow up with the current state of the topic.

First make sure, you get rid of LC_ALL and reboot.
As you are the only one mentioned such an unusual issue, with disappearing translation files, it's rather unlikely to be a general issue.

First make sure, you get rid of LC_ALL and reboot.
As you are the only one mentioned such an unusual issue, with disappearing translation files, it's rather unlikely to be a general issue.
I will try and update the system as it is now, and see if it is of any help. If not, then I will restore the backup and proceed as you told me in your last quote. I will let you know soon. Thanks.

Here the results:
Updating the system today, from ver. 4.18 to 4.20 ended up with the same issue, so I restored the timeshift backup.
First make sure, you get rid of LC_ALL and reboot.

Finally I came up with a workaround and solved the problem, momentarily. Thanks for all your great effort and valuable time. I would not say it is "solved", but I can say we can proceed to "close" the case. Cheers.

I had a timeshift backup with XFCE ver. 4.18, so I restored this snapshot, then with "apt policy" and "dpkg -l | grep -i 'xfc[e]'" I listed the components of my xfce desktop and then I did a script in order to do "apt-mark hold" to all the files.
In this way, I can continue updating my system and I have the assurance that the files in XFCE won't change so momentarily won't have the issue. I hope this gives me time to think about how to migrate my configurations to a new setup, if Fehlix's solution does not work.

Today I did what Fehlix told me:
Take LC_ALL out of /etc/default, remove the line LC_ALL, this is not meant to be set within /etc/default.
If LC_ALL is set even to in empty value, your system get's confused.
And verified that the contents of /etc/default/locale does not cause any problem:

But the anomaly expressed itself again:
So, I guess there is no point investing more time on this. I will rollback the changes, revert to my previous configuration and plan to do a full re-install, trying to export my desktop configuration and files.
As a matter of fact, it would be useful if instead of trying to solve this, may be you have a good idea on how to export my desktop configuration, save it somehow, so in order to apply after the new install I would not have to invest time doing command by command to take the new installment to the state of the desktop as I have and like now.
