XFCE4 installation from MXPI Popular Apps fails

Hi,

For proof of concept I'm trying to install XFCE4 from MXPI Popular Applications into a fresh AV Linux install in Gnome Boxes and getting stopped at this point:

Code: Select all

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  desktop-defaults-mx-xfce-system
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 51 reinstalled, 0 to remove and 51 not upgraded.
64 not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0 B/10.2 kB of archives.
After this operation, 65.5 kB of additional disk space will be used.
E: Internal Error, No file name for catfish:amd64
Is this expected?

Hold on... Mr. Rushy Pants here forgot to run MX-Updater first... It progressed further I'm still getting an error but I think it's a conflict with the Thunar folder thumbnailer which I also packaged for AVL, let me sort that out first and see what happens..

OK, that got it to finish, sorry for the noise, my bad.. now for the big reboot!

And... Mostly success! Some missing Icons and xfwm themes that aren't there because I don't include them in AVL themes and for some reason QT stuff isn't taking the GTK theme but all the main stuff is there.. I would expect there to be some minor adjustments for a D.E that wasn't planned for.

Well OK,

Since this has gone pretty well I might as well do the extra diligence to get ahead of potential issues in case AVL Users want to optionally install XFCE4 in the future so I can fill in the blanks..

So, in the context of an existing AVL install with Enlightenment when I install XFCE4 with the MX defaults from MXPI-->Popular Apps QT stuff isn't taking the GTK theming and I'm using the same GTK theme in both XFCE4 and Enlightenment. I know vanilla MX XFCE4 handles this and when I'm logged into Enlightenment the QT apps are properly themed so I know my GTK themes work with QT so what am I missing in the XFCE4 install?

As you can see the QT colors are brown and orange with no correlation to the dark and blue GTK theme:

I even tried installing 'qt5gtk2' from MX Test but no dice there either..

Does the other them have gtk2 definition in it?

Yep, the theme folder has a gtk-2.0 subfolder and gtkrc.. and it does work in Enlightenment so the gtk2 theme is working in QT apps. Actually MX Comfort is behaving the same.. It's interesting to note that the font seems OK and the button widgets are right, it's just the colors that are off.

This is observed in a Gnome Boxes VM, is it possible this is a Video display driver thing?

Same VM logged into Enlightenment:

maybe see what neofetch thinks are the themes.

looks weird to me.

got any gtk overrides like in a .gtkrc (I forget exact name, but lives in home folder hidden I think) file?

Hmmm,

I don't think anything looks too out of whack there..? I certainly don't have any themes with that brownish color...lol

I don't know what that theme is supposed to look like, but I think that Xfce Appearance will not change that file, so unlikely the gtk2 theme actually changes when you change it with Xfce Appearance.

Ok, but in the screenshots Thunar is reflecting what I've selected and it changes back and forth from MX Comfort to (my) default theme. Also I know this theme works in XFCE4 because it was also used in AVL 21 which was still purely XFCE4 (4.18) and the MX Tools matched up with it fine.

I don't know what's amiss but I don't think it's the theme itself or the theme chooser.. I can't imagine where that color palette is coming from, there are 2 MX Comfort themes and 3 AVL themes and none of them have brown in them..

thunar isn't gtk2.

so the .gtk2rc file changes when you change theme? because I don't even have that file. but whatever is in that file will supersede what thunar sets, at least for gtk2 applications, which is what Qt theme follows.

Ok, but the same gtkrc file is present in both installed DE's and Enlightenment is just using a hardwired QPA Platformtheme environment variable, but let me try deleting the gtkrc file and see what happens..

*ADDED

Meh, deleted gtkrc file completely logged out and same result, weird background color still there. Good to note it doesn't really need to be there, it's was leftover from desperation trying to make SVG Icons work which was another problem...

Anyway enough of your time wasted, it's nothing obviously related to how MXPI installs XFCE4 so it's some other unknown quirk apparently whether because there is already another DE on the system who knows..? XFCE4 and KDE don't play nice theme wise either..

FWIW,

I'm encountering even worse QT palette problems in testing LXQT, something is very weird here, need to move testing to bare metal I think..

yes kde colors can mess with things too, although usually on the gtk3 side of things. they uses css overrides to make colors match.

one other thing. the colors in the gtk2 definition for a theme don't have to match the gtk3 ones. there is at least one theme out there where they are very different, and its confusing too.

As you can see the QT colors are brown and orange with no correlation to the dark and blue GTK theme:

If you look at the icons in the tweak window it seems to me as if all colors are being inverted/altered.
Maybe it's nothing to do with the theme and something with how qt/gtk2 windows are being rendered?

idesk had a perhaps similar problem with svg icons in mxfb and always inverted the colors.

That actually makes a lot more sense since those colors are not in any installed theme, the inverted theory seems quite plausible, of course 'why' is the big question. I can't fathom why they're not inverted in Enlightenment but seem so in both XFCE4 and LXQT..

*EDIT

I just did some work in GIMP for the first time since installing this ##$$**& nVidia 4080 Video Card and now I'm getting very odd and unexpected colors when using 'Colorize' I think maybe the root of this issue is the damned Video card...!? :bawling:  :bawling:  :bawling:

To be serious again, doesn't xfce have a colour profile settings thingamajig? Maybe try fiddling with that?

Hi fehlix,

QSI from VM or host machine?

From the system showing the color issues, I guess a VM.

OK,

After weeks of fiddling around and testing ISO's the inverted QT colors only appear in VM's on this computer. Tests on a Thinkpad and another older Desktop show no weird color issues so it is some bizarro combo of my current flaky nVidia Video driver and Gnome Boxes so nothing to do with XFCE4 or LXQT...
