Problems with movie playback

Hi,
I chose my media center to have enough performance to play all kinds of media.
Recently, I have been experiencing more and more often that after an update movie playback runs with sound dropouts and frozen images.
QSI of my mediacenter:

Where is my error in thinking?
Has the software become so slow that my hardware is no longer sufficient, or do I have other problems?
With the playback problems, it is completely irrelevant whether the videos are delivered from my NAS, youtube or a streaming service.
It also doesn't matter which software I use to play the movies (vlc or kodi).
In the meantime, it runs without any problems until the problems return with a new update.
Yesterday I was able to play all kinds of movies without any problems and today the problems are back after the update. I didn't see any package during the update that was relevant for media playback.
If I play the same movie on my desktop computer, it runs without a problem. Always!
I don't understand it!

If you tell vlc or kodi to play the video from the command line, can you see any differences between when it's working fine versus when it has hiccups?

Hi Stevo,
thank you very much for your attention.
vlc does not grumble when hiccuping, but using ffplay shows some differences.
output of ffplay looks like:
Code: Select all
_STATISTICS_WRITING_APP: mkvmerge v74.0.0 ('You Oughta Know') 64-bit
_STATISTICS_TAGS: BPS DURATION NUMBER_OF_FRAMES NUMBER_OF_BYTES
116.00 A-V: -0.028 fd= 51 aq= 3567KB vq=11800KB sq= 0B f=0/0
on hiccuping numbers after "A-V" changes quickly but don't change at all at normal playback

Just spitballing here, but have you tried a different compositor? Wayland still has issues iin bookworm.

Do you get the same hiccups right after a reboot, or with various other available players, such as mpv, smplayer, or dragonplayer. Testing with a Debian style kernel could also be relevant. And is it with every type of video file? ( I recommend mediainfo to get quick reports of the video encoding of the file)
Your hardware should be fast enough for years to come, no problems there.

Thank you, I had assumed the same.
But I've been having problems with video playback for about one year now.
Once it helped to use a different kernel, but then the multimedia libraries were updated and since then a kernel change has not helped anymore.
I remember when I was playing with ffplay that ffplay would throw away images if the sound couldn't be converted in time.
But the cost of sound-conversion is ridiculous for the movies I watch.
I also have passthrough audio enabled on Kodi and still get dropouts.

Yes, the hiccups start right after turning system on and happens with various players.
I tested kodi and vlc for local movies and firefox and brave-browser for streaming platforms.

OK, I'll look into this further
Perhaps my particular hardware-setup has something to do with the problem.
I use two different ports on the graphics card:
- the beamer is connected to one
- the AV amplifier to another.
In KDE, I have configured the screen of the amplifier as a copy of the screen of the projector.

I wonder if it has to do with the nvidia driver.
QSI wrote:Display: server: X.org v: 1.21.1.7 with: Xwayland v: 22.1.9 compositor: kwin_x11 driver: X:

I've never seen an API line in QSI quite like that. It usually goes on to list the renderer and whether or not direct-rendering works, e.g.
MyQSI wrote:API: OpenGL v: 4.6 Mesa 22.3.6 renderer: AMD Radeon Graphics (renoir LLVM 15.0.6 DRM 3.49
6.1.0-28-amd64) direct-render: Yes
A lack of direct rendering would certainly cause hiccups,
Given the current issues we have been seeing with nvidia drivers & 6.11+ liquorix kernels, I would suggest trying a 6.9 or earlier kernel. Newer isn't always better.

while searching for the qsi problem i discovered that no matter which compositor i choose the qsi report always says xwayland.
I changed compositor at KDE settings at workspace -> startoptions -> autostart - session
I can choose between X11 and Wayland, but changing the value does not change qsi-compositor output.
So where else could I change active compositor?

Changing kernel makes no difference and I tried all kind of movie i have - there's no difference between audio- or video-formats

Whenever I have vlc playback issues mpv works fine. But that's when vlc won't play it at all.

Same hiccup with mpv - no difference
Today's update of multimedia libraries has made problems even worse. The hiccups now last more than twice as long as yesterday.

Another example from another thread (KDE again):
Code: Select all
Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 1.21.1.7 compositor: kwin_x11 driver: X: loaded: nvidia
unloaded: fbdev, modesetting, nouveau, vesa alternate: nv gpu: nvidia display-ID: :0 screens: 1
This time nothing like " with: Xwayland v: xx.x.x " ..
Maybe you need to change it on login screen.

Perhaps my particular hardware-setup has something to do with the problem.
I use two different ports on the graphics card:
- the beamer is connected to one
- the AV amplifier to another.
In KDE, I have configured the screen of the amplifier as a copy of the screen of the projector.
Could you explain this setup a little more.
Which connectors are you using from the graphics cards? Is it going to a computer monitor (multiple?)
What's a beamer?
AV amplifier?

Another example from another thread (KDE again):

unloaded: fbdev, modesetting, nouveau, vesa alternate: nv gpu: nvidia display-ID: :0 screens: 1
This time nothing like " with: Xwayland v: xx.x.x " ..
Maybe you need to change it on login screen.
@Kermit the Frog So I tested my theory and removed the xwayland package
and now KDE doesn't have the ability to use the wayland desktop session at the log in screen.
Here's the QSI from it. Notice the lack of "with: Xwayland" in the Display section.

Could you explain this setup a little more.
Which connectors are you using from the graphics cards? Is it going to a computer monitor (multiple?)
What's a beamer?
AV amplifier?
Projector (beamer):
https://www.sharpnecdisplays.eu/p/datas ... 25ul.xhtml
Amplifier:
https://de.yamaha.com/de/products/audio ... oduct-tabs
Both items are HDMI-Splitters and at first attempt I connected the projector to video-out of the amplifier.
But dynamic cable sensing of Linux is very spongy, which often resulted in black screen. Even during movie playback.
Once screen was black, there's no way to turn video back on (or at least I didn't find one). Reboot was the only option
So I looked for a solution to avoid cable sensing ...
Now I have connected both (amplifier and projector) to displayports of nvidia grafic card.
The amplifiers video out is not connected and projectors speakers are turned off.
That setup was a bit tricky.
With KDE-setup I selected that amplifier-screen is a copy of projector-screen (which in turn duplicates audio out on both displayports used).
In audio-setup I selected nvidia card as default and tested and selected 5.1 output
In good times, this setup works wonderful, but it is diva-like when it comes to system updates
... and I have no idea, who is causing that hiccups

The amplifier link points to the same projector link but I get what you are doing.
Instead of connecting the computer to a monitor/television, your using a projector which is where you are experiencing the audio/video problems?
Have you tried connecting to a computer monitor to rule out issues with the computer and/or the software programs you are using?

Today's update of multimedia libraries has made problems even worse. The hiccups now last more than twice as long as yesterday.
The only recent ones I can find are
Code: Select all
2024-12-29 16:10:56 upgrade gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio amd64 1.22.0-5+deb12u1 1.22.0-5+deb12u2
2024-12-29 16:10:56 upgrade gstreamer1.0-plugins-good amd64 1.22.0-5+deb12u1 1.22.0-5+deb12u2
2024-12-29 16:10:56 upgrade gstreamer1.0-gtk3 amd64 1.22.0-5+deb12u1 1.22.0-5+deb12u2
And since vlc or mpv don't use gstreamer, they should have been unaffected.

Well I'm quite sure that the problem is caused by both enddevices being hdmi-splitter.
Using a simple monitor will rule out a possible source of problems and as that setup is nothing what I want - no choice.
I'm also sure, that dynamic sensing all over is the real source of trouble.
I prefer static setup, which I have to work out once and it keeps unchanged until changing hardware.
There are now so many (hidden) layers that setting it up is like writing a master's thesis

Hi,
I remember how movie players worked when graphics cards didn't have an audio processor:
The movie source was demuxed into video and audio. Both streams were processed in separate pipelines and synchronized at output.
The images were sent to the graphics card and the sound to the sound card.
With this knowledge, I wanted to set up the movie center, but I had to realize that graphics cards with audio processors had to be controlled differently.
I had tried to output the images to one port and the sound to another port, or to a different audio device.
But none of that worked.
Then I found out that audio can only be output together with video to an HDMI port.
This led me to the current setup, where both ports output the same thing.
However, I wonder how this works in software. The input processing in the movie player should work unchanged, only the output processing must be different now.
This means that the images and sound must be muxed into a single stream, which is then sent to the graphics card.
This leads me to the following questions:
- Who creates the muxed stream from the images and the sound?
- How are both streams synchronized?
- Who duplicates the stream to both ports?
- How is the output processing affected by the autosensing if both ports report different video- and audio-capabilities?
I suspect, that creating the final output stream is more time consuming than sending raw data to output devices, so that could be the cause of hiccups.

Hi,
let me ask you another question:
what do you think makes more sense with regard to the frequent hiccups?
- a new graphics card
or
- a faster processor?

Can you replicate this using the live ISO?

Well, I tried it, but live ISO does not have nvidia driver and vlc crashes with nouveau driver.
As nvidia driver requires reboot, I guess its not possible to install at live ISO

Did you ever use the setup ap? If your receiver is networked the ap will tell the tsr-700 which ports to use.

Hm, the TSR-700 works as expected.
My problem is, that linux does NOT work as expected

The TSR-700 is capable of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Have you tried that route with the audio?

Thanks for the hint, but I don't know, how to get audio out to WI-FI- or Bluetooth-devices.
Afaik both are network-devices but no sound receivers

Sounds like a singular problem with the way the tsr is connected and not with the OS itself. If you introduce hardware into a computer system and they both work separately, it's the connections and not so much the software/OS's fault. If your run a cable from your pc to a specific port on your receiver it either is getting data or it's not.
"works as expected?" How's that? Did you use the ap?

Sounds like a singular problem with the way the tsr is connected and not with the OS itself.
That's not true - for sure!
If you read again my first post, it says, that my system works fine from time to time.
One (linux-)update wipes all the hiccups away and everything works fine (every video/audio combination I have works without issues).
Then after another (linux-)update hiccups come back again and NO movie can be played without issues.
It does not depend on the player software nor does it depend on a kernel version nor does it depend on the hardware.
It's probably a timing problem, but I haven't been able to find the cause yet.
