For the record:
nala description
Code: Select all
Description: Commandline frontend for the APT package manager
Nala is a frontend for the APT package manager. It has a lot
of the same functionality, but formats the output to be more
human readable. Also implements a history function to see past
transactions and undo/redo them. Much like Fedora's dnf history.
And nala usage with mx-updater/apt-notifier:

This is interesting. Sparky recommends uninstalling nala on their rolling version based on Debian Testing. They use the latest version of nala.

It looks like they claim it cannot deal well with broken packages, fortunately that doesn't really apply to a stable distribution.

Maybe a sparky issue:
Due to nala doesn’t full-upgrade packages properly and doesn’t handle with broken packages on Sparky rolling (8) I recommend to uninstall nala.
The original option for a full upgrade (what apt calls full-upgrade or dist-upgrade)
was always "nala upgrade --full".
They added later the alias "full-upgrade" so it looked similar to apt.
MX Updater is always explicitly using either
nala upgrade --no-full
or
nala upgrade --full
So not sure what issues sparky has with broken packages, probably a rolling symptom.
In case I would have broken packages, I'm would try to figure the issue and use apt anyway.
They mentioned some fixes with alias handling in the changelog,
may this is related to sparky's issues.

Don't have any issues with latest nala, maybe we can move nala to main for both MX21 and MX23.
Thanks

I haven't had any trouble since backporting and installing it a week or so ago, but I would hope to get some more developers and users testing it first, to avoid a repeat of the Bullseye kernel-Nvidia driver debacle.

Hi
I discovered nala after watching Chris Titus youtube
https://youtu.be/oroSkR4Nn_w?si=OfOlm7zlvudkO4XE
Just tested it. It works for me. The thing I like most about it that
reports that
nala downloads packages in parallel
also I did a
and it found a fast mirror I had not see before.....I admit, I had not tested mirrors in a long time.
nala fetch then allowed me to keep a number of mirrors (for parallel downloading).....I chose 3 YMMV
in summary......the way info is presented is good.....speed is good

I'm sorry, that was an unlucky typo on my side. I meant: "

No problems with 0.15.4 but I have a question about the conf file.
Since this option updates the package list automatically when the upgrade command is run
Code: Select all
# Set to false to disable auto updating the package list
# when running the upgrade command
auto_update = true
If we set this option to true, will that be the same as typing upgrade --full?
Code: Select all
# Set to true to make full-upgrade the default
full_upgrade = false

On CLi, yes.
With MX-Updater: No

OK, thanks. I do use nala in the terminal on my fluxbox install and MX-Updater on my XFCE VM.

@fehlix , is that because MX-Updater's full upgrade or non-full upgrade choices are set out in the $HOME/.config//MX-Linux/apt-notifier.conf file as well as in MX-Updater's GUI preferences?
If my config file is:
Code: Select all
# Use alternative apt/apt-get command line package manager
use_nala = true
and my upgrade preference is:
ksnip_20241007-111836.png
will that automatically make any MX-Updater upgrade via nala a full upgrade?

Not sure what you mean with "is that because"....but I may guess what you mean...
MX Updater, ignores the nala.conf settings in resp. to full-upgrade and always
uses explicitly for "basic upgrade" nala's "upgrade --no-full" (which is apt/apt-get upgrade)
and for "full upgrade" nala's "upgrade --full" (which is apt/apt-get full-upgrade).
So, whatever the user/admin has set within nala.conf will be ignored with MX Updater,
hence I wrote "With MX-Updater: No"
Background:
nala uses "commands" like "upgrade" and has options for those command like "--full" and "--no-full"
Around version 0.14 they introduced a new "command" "full-upgrade",
in order to make it look similar to apt. But at that time they found out,
that they have now both commands "full-upgrade" and "upgrade" doing the same thing when having default upgrade-option set to --full.
And to reduce the confusion, they reverted the default "upgrade" option back to --no-full.
So, MX Updater ignores nala's self made "confusion" and uses always what was selected with the MX Update's preferences either basic upgrade or full-upgrade.

Thanks, fehlix. That's exactly what t I meant. MX-Updater will set its own full or basic setting for the package manager [when run through the GUI Updater], where it's apt or nala.
nala to 0.15.4 to move from testrepo to main

nala version 0.15.4 has been in MX testrepo for a few months now. I have been using this version since then.
Mostly all upgrades were done with MX Updater (apt-notifier), without any problems. including kernel upgrades.
So maybe I would ask to move the version from testrepo to main, if that would be possible. Thanks.
