I don't know that copyright can be a problem if you only copy for private use.?
I have had a VHS video recorder for decades, and I have never been told it is a risk.
If I put files on a server with public access or sell videos it is another story but I have no plans in that direction.

As for recording... SimpleScreenRecorder should be installed already and I have found it to be pretty good to record what you want. And VLC can also stream and record as well.
Thanks for not embarrassing me by suggesting that I try to read the MX manual. ;-)
I had forgotten about the
SimpleScreenRecorder in the main repo but now I have tested it a little, and I am impressed.
It puts some load on the CPU when recording but not as much as I expected, and the result is a lot better.
I don't know how much I will use it but among other things it is a great feeling to know that if I can just get a song on the screen I can also record it and afterwards play it instantly anytime on demand.
I have seen there is a recording tool in VLC also but I don't know how much it can do.

1) Is it OK to steal a book if it's only for personal use?
2) Possession of stolen goods is still a crime in most countries.
3) Sites that offer 'free' new digital content aren't doing so for altruistic reasons. They are going to exact a payoff somehow and as a computer operator that needs to be your biggest worry.

Bad follow-up timing for my post,

but Jakob, if you want to record audio, audacity is installed via default, there's also audio-recorder, a gnome recorder and others.
Screenshot link for basic Audacity setup and usage:

I wouldn't run ANY browser extensions that are closed-source.
That said one of my all-time favorite addons is "LibRedirect" it will redirect popular sites to "open/alternative frontends".
When I go to a youtube link it redirects to an "Invidious" frontend and most instances have a "Download" button on the left.
It allows greater security IMO because alot of these frontends can function without JS.
If you want a program that can download files from alot of different sites, I recommend "yt-dlp".
It's CLI but super simple, just "yt-dlp [link]" and it will grab it. Add "-x" and it will extract audio.
You can then get stuff from google themselves so it should be safer (they won't knowingly host malware, not impossible tho)
These files are NOT downloaded with the execute permission which makes it safer, however the threats CharlesV mentioned exploit the Library that reads these files so you still need to keep your A/V Libs updated (ffmpeg and the lot).
I think one good example of this threat is called "StageFright"
https://wikiless.org/wiki/Stagefright_(bug)
If you need a GUI checkout "tartube" and "youtubedl-gui".
Overall I recommend checking out both "yt-dlp" and the addon "LibRedirect" It will change the way you navigate the web and IMO is what the web should be.

That's actually a pretty nice link - many options webplayer and others.
Different:
https://everynoise.com/
Also search: "This made KCMU the first station in the world to offer online audio of this quality."
which is now
https://www.kexp.org/schedule/ which plays different genres of music at different times.
They used to have one called "Swinging Doors" that played songs like:
https://www.last.fm/music/The+Backslide ... To+My+Baby
and others that might play something like
https://youtu.be/oRqjVPljSGQ?t=167

This isn't exactly "instant", or a link

, but these days a sort of... outside of the box idea: if you happen to have a local library nearby that maintains and updates a good music selection - a physical one, on CDs - this can be a goldmine for discovering and listening to all kinds of new and old music. Depending on where you live, it might also be perfectly legal to rip those CDs into a personal copy, so that you can listen to them even after you have returned the actual discs (Asunder CD Ripper in MX Linux works very nicely).
