Last Update Created a second MXTools Category  [Solved]

Posted: Sun Jan 08, 2023 3:50 pm

I just installed the latest update and my whisker menu now has a second MX Tools Category that shows up. How can that second MX Tools category item be removed? I'm using the latest MX21 XFCE 64 bit. Thanks.

Delete the mx-tools.menu file under ~/.config/menus/applications-merged

We made the change ages ago to take the menu file out of the home folder but some long time users may still have it because we don’t mess with home folders during updates

Did this recent update fix this problem?:
https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php ... 63#p704063
https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?p=692439
Right now I don't have a MX 21 Xfce installation to check this.

it should. we are also planning to ship with menulibre instead of mx-menu-editor on future releases of MX, starting with mx21.3.

I hope so because neither entry for MX Tools in the Whisker menu works. I will wait for the update that fixes it.

so do you have any custom menus to remove under ~/.config/menus? at least the default one that is mentioned in the blog post.

I didn't add any custom menus. I have two MX Tools in the Whisher menu. I don't understand what is and where is "~/.config/menus?"

~ is short for your home folder. can also be designated $HOME or /home/$USER

in your home folder is a hidden folder .config/menus that contains a folder called applications-merged. if you haven't made any custom edits, then you can remove that folder. that should resolve the double menu entry.

Just to be clear, the application "MX Tools" under the category "MX Tools" (of which you see two) in the Whisker menu isn't working, or you're not seeing the separate applications under the category?

Users might find it safer (smaller hammer) to do the following:

Code: Select all

mv ~/.config/menus/applications-merged/mx-tools.menu .
This moves the file mx-tools.menu into the current working directory (would be the user's home directory if current working directory not changed after launching the terminal). This allows for the possibility of putting the file back into place in case of unintended consequences are found to happen.

The solution did work perfectly as already reported.

Even better.. leave it where it is, and rename it, adding _bak at the end ;)
