MX-19 Repository: The Warpinator Thread

Warpinator 1.0.4 (with git commits up to 05 June 2020) is now in the Test Repository for MX-19.
Version 1.0.5 was just released, but really only is a roll up of these commits, and fixes a dependency issue I identified to the developer.
Please do not enable any repos to install this. You should be able to find and install it using the MX Test Repo tab in MX Package Installer.
Warpinator is an easy to use graphical application that allows you to share files across your local lan between individual systems or groups of systems.
No need to set up Samba, NFS, or complex server setup/configuration. Systems automatically see each other and you simply drag and drop files from one to another.
Features:
- Encrypted communication
- Accept/deny file transfers
- Share to multiple computers
- File transfer history
- Set device nickname
- Designate a receiving folder
- Set group "codes"
- Specify a port
Warpinator is developed by the Linux Mint team, more specifically by mtwebster who is very helpful and addresses issues very quickly.
More information for end users can be found
GitHub README.
I have been testing and using Warpinator prior to first initial releases, it works well, and for me has come in handy "slinging" packages for testing on different systems.
Please let us know if you run into any issues using it or don't, this way it can get moved to the Stable Repo. But this may be dependent on moving some of the previously packaged dependencies as well.

Thank you for taking a look at it. It doesn’t replace a typical file share, but it does have its purpose and it does fill it well.
Please let us know your experiences with it.

It doesn't "start up" meaning it does not open?
Please trying to launch warpinator from the terminal and provide any output.
I just installed it on both MX-19 i386 and MX-19 AHS this morning without issues.

Correct it doesn't "start up" meaning it does not open.
As launch warpinator from the terminal it also not "start up" meaning it does not open.

That is very odd, there should be some output at least.
Can you try:
Is your system fully updated?
Also, have at any point have you enabled/added then removed any repos to install and or update anything?
Several users have installed this with no reported issues, I've installed it at least 25 times before we even added it to the repo, and 6 times now since.

The only thing witch comes in this directions, could be that as you know I am fresh/new to MxLinux and in the first day' s I tried to install Atom/Paalmoon with "apt install" witch was not working. Till I found that MxLinux has it own install process Mx Package Manager. And by that I installed Atom/Paalmoon from the Mx Package Manager.

No worries, we can try and troubleshoot it some more. These things happen sometimes, its a good chance to learn.
The fact that you also get no output with the --debug option makes me think it is not warpinator that is the problem.
Its hard to say if something from your attempts to install Atom or Palemoon caused it, or something else along the way. Its really hard to say. Warpinator is a is developed in python.
I'd like to take this troubleshooting to Private Message (PM) rather than fill up this Announcement and Release thread with posts trying to figure out what is going on with your system. I will PM you in a bit.

Warpinator 1.0.6 is in the Test Repo for MX-19.
Please
do not enable any repos to install this. You should be able to find and install it using the MX Test Repo tab in MX Package Installer.
Updates since the last packaged version:
- util.py: Only use org.freedesktop.FileManager1 to reveal and select normal files.
- warpinator.py: Disable the clear-ops button in the user view if there aren't any ops.
- l10n: Update translations

Please

No real significant user related updates since the last packaged version, but you can look at the changelog

You don’t enable the Test Repo, you install via MX Package Installer Test Repo tab as stated in the first post. Also the actual the dependencies it complains about would be nice.

When I enabled the Test Repository in MX, it automatically enabled the Test Repository in Synaptic
Someone just helped me get this resolved, using the option to install -t mx
I am new to MX and trying to figure the exact procedure out. The main thing that was missing was Python dependencies.

If you would have just used MX Package Installer Test Repo tab, That’s the procedure, it would work first time, without anything else. MX Package Installer is there to make things easy.

Will it work OTB with MX machines on the network running the older versions or Warpinator?
By work, I mean detect them and be able to transfer files.

To be honest I am not really sure. I believe (if I remember right) that I have had luck with different versions working together in the past.
That being said, if there are enough changes between releases backwards compatibility may break. I can't test each version with every version each time, I do know this version works with this version another systems, sorry.

I tested the Warpinator new version from the test repo.
I installed the 1.1.1.1 with the MXPI, it picked up that this was an upgrade.
That went well. And now I answered my main question, is the new version interoperable with machines on the network running the earlier version from the stable repo.
It does. The new install immediately showed the other warpinator instances on the network and I transferred some files successfully. Also, this new version was visible from machines with the older version.

thanks ... hadn't heard of this so i just installed it from test repo on my laptops
it's brilliant and just what i needed because i transfer huge amounts of data daily between laptops ... i had been using external drives ...back and forth ... back and forth ....
it's like magic isn't it ?
... by now i should not be surprised what clever machines can do but watching a movie fly through the air from one machine to another is incredibly
arousing ..thrilling
i can even stand between the laptop waving my arms and the data just flies through me .... whatever next ?

Yup, works great. I used to use samba on my network, but as I eliminated the last windows machine on my network, it seemed to stop working. (at least the discovery part to find the other machines).
Then I heard about this, maybe a post by SwampRabbit or on the internet. But I installed it last year, and it has been great, easy to use to move files from one machine to another.
A classic linux tool, does one thing really well.

Thank you both for testing and providing feedback.
I honestly don't know if Warpinator can be moved to the Stable repo, I'd have to double check that moving the dependencies aren't going to affect the removal of a version needed by something or someone. If it breaks even one application for one person, I'd rather just leave it in MX Test Repo, it isn't like we make it hard for folks to find and install it via MX Package Installer.

For MX-21 and forward this should be in the Stable repos no problem though.

I think those dependencies break the cinnamon version from the Debian repo. Specifically the 'xapp' packages

You are absolutely right, this is because the Xfce panel needs a patch to display the new style icons that change with the panel, it affects a lot of applications actually. Thanks for bringing it back up.
Install the xfce-panel using MX Pacakage Installer > MX Test Repo tab. Log out and log back in, problem solved.
I’m gonna have to get this version of the panel moved to the stable Repo or make it a dependency of Warpinator.
This won’t affect the 4.16 xfce-panel in MX-21 because it works like it should OOTB.

Install the xfce-panel using MX Pacakage Installer > MX Test Repo tab. Log out and log back in, problem solved.
Yes, that works, thanks

just did a new install on a new (old) laptop
i didn't realize that warpinator was still in the test repos
in case you want test repo feedback, i just wanted to say that i have been using it daily for months across the home network on various machines and it works beautifully ...

@junoluna thank you, I don’t think this can get moved for MX-19 due to dependencies.
There is some drama with the free IPTV Countries list, it going to affect the Linux Mint team who actually developed this gem, the list is actually being moved to a private GitHub Repo. I plan on reaching out to see if I can help or try to make sure our users aren’t affected too.
So if users have issues with the included lists that is why.
Ignore this, I shouldn't post after midnight when tired

What does IPTV have to do with Warpinator?
I thought Warpinator was for sharing files among your own computers.

Warpinator 1.1.2 plus GitHub commits up to 20210324 is now in the MX Test Repo.
Please do not enable any repos to install this. You should be able to find and install it using the MX Test Repo tab in MX Package Installer.
Users should notice that a new version of the xfce4-panel gets pulled in with this version of Warpinator. This version of the panel contains a patch to allow the Warpinator icon in the Notification Area to automatically change with light or dark panels. Users will have to logout and back in to have the newly installed xfce4-panel to take affect, but shouldn't have to reboot.
