MX-14 beta 2
Re: MX-14 beta 2
I'm actually amazed at how many old machines will work at all after 7-10 years, much less work well with Linux. Most of the time they work as well or better than they did with Windows, but there is a limit with processors, and video cards, even when the ram is bumped up to the maximum amount.
Re: MX-14 beta 2
My 14 year old 1.7 GHz P4 was a no go with Debian 6.0, and KDE at 312 Mb ram and an old nVidia graphics card. Bumping it up to 1 Gb ram and a nVidia 6200 made it usable but no speed demon, and at times frustrating to use. Now with MX-14 on, it runs, while not super fast, at a very responsive clip. Videos and Youtube are smooth. Netflix desktop, however, is choppy and really not usable as such. So limitations remain with older machines.

Re: MX-14 beta 2
I'd actually like to see people start describing the performance on new(er) machines, b/c the whole field of old machines and Linux has been done...by antiX!
What's happening on the upper end?

Do not have an upper end machine to put it on but in VB on my new laptop it flies.
CPU Intel i5 Dual core 1.8 GHz, Intel onboard graphics, 12 Gb ram.

Very fast on my year-old AMD-based laptop, which is considered a "basic" laptop.
CPU: Dual core AMD A6-4400M APU with Radeon HD Graphics (-MCP-)
As most distros do, it sets the HDMI as the default sound output, but that can be fixed in .asoundrc.

Not really high end hardware but my Acer C7 Chromebook is running Ubuntu crouton Xfce and looks and runs awesome. That is low end new hardware, I can only imagine how good Linux would be on high end new hardware with tons of ram.
Re: MX-14 beta 2
I'd rather hear about MX-14, thanks

Have you tried MX-14 on that Chromebook? If so, how is it running compared to Ubuntu crouton Xfce.KBD wrote:Not really high end hardware but my Acer C7 Chromebook is running Ubuntu crouton Xfce and looks and runs awesome. Re: MX-14 beta 2
I would like to try it, but I don't know of any chroot for it besides Debian and Ubuntu. Not sure what would be involved in someone creating a MX chroot. It might be worth considering in the near future as Chromebook sales are taking off. I have to think MX would fly on my Chromebook, as would AntiX.anticapitalista wrote:Have you tried MX-14 on that Chromebook? No, I wouldn't. Some people think Linux will run on a toaster, and it should run like a quad core with 4G RAM.anticapitalista wrote:Joking aside, you will be surprised what some people think they can do with an old box/laptop.
If I got a euro (or dollar/yen/pound) for every unrealistic expectation of what (name distro here) can do, I'd be a millionaire.
You know how it goes.
"I have an old computer that worked fantastically with windows 98 until it got slowed down by virus. I read that linux can save old computers like mine, but what a load of baloney! I can't surf the net, video doesn't work, I tried to rip a dvd. Nothing but crashes.
BTW It is a PII with 128MB RAM. Why won't firefox work? Netscape did!"
Once upon a time I thought I'd be all do-goody and fix up old computers and donate them to deserving folks (my wife is a professional do-gooder and she had plenty of potential recipients).
I got tired of people turning their noses up at what I offered. Wasn't good enough, fast enough, fancy enough. Plus they expected to be supported for free, too. Gave up the charity work quickly. Now I deal with cash customers only. I may adjust my pricing to their situations (within reason), but it's amazing how much less people will settle for when they're paying for it.
