What really needs fixed is the chromium first startup. Enough chromium process start that you would think the browser is running but there is one hung process that doesn’t do anything when the problem occurs and it shows up as chromium-browse when watching processes in htop. Killing that process does not let chromium launch and so far I have no remedy except a reboot. Logout login is not enough. . (Not browser, not a typo).

Agreed. Doesn't happen on RPi OS so nothing showed up in a search there.

In your RC work it looks like you made some changes in the first boot sequence or I'm imagining things. Was there something there that might be affecting this?

I want to look at an upgraded b2 to check--thinking of an incremental upgrade.

Went through an incremental upgrade from a clean b2, found this interesting

--chromium, no change
--pipewire and the other pipe stuff, no change
--sh--chromium hung, saw the error message I've reported before
--rest

Don't know enuf to tell if that is relevant or not

To finish my incremental process: set up the splash, all good.

Since it works after a reboot, I would expect incremental upgrade also work

The only changed to the initial bootup sequence is the addition of the splash
