Re: MX Boot Animation at testing

#161 Post by CharlesV »

@Freja

Here is the latest test run at the Startup / Shutdown animation.
This version incorporates the following mods :
__ Removed the direct SetImage code and reverted back to the callback / 'division' code from previous releases.
__ Removed several blank graphics in shutdown animation
__ Increased timing in shutdown graphics to 'last a little longer' on most screens.

This code is once again working from the callback refresh and so it will be affected by the faster / slower machines, but it should animate on all machines again. I have tested on all of my six machines. My two laptops on MX23 beta still show no shutdown animation - from *any* of the plymouth themes and not just mine. However, the MXLiveLogo animation works on my both of my desktops now on MX23, MX23 VM's and then on ALL of my test rigs and VM's running MX21.

Please give this a look on your MAC and let me know how it looks.

The latest version ( MXLiveLogo_230626ad ) can be downloaded from here:
https://u.pcloud.link/publink/show?code ... vEiF0ErgzV

To install:
__ Unarchive the Zip file, creating the MXLiveLogo folder
__ Copy the MXLiveLogo to the /usr/share/plymouth/themes folder, over writing the current folder there.
__ Run in a terminal sudo plymouth-set-default-theme -R MXLiveLogo
__ Reboot.
____ Note: I have seen several times that it requires TWO reboots to in order to see the new MXLiveLogo Animation.

@siamhie & @FullScale4Me excellent! And thanks for those reports.

I will be working at figuring out the why no shutdown / restarts, but very glad to hear that boot is working!!

On the "problem" Mac, almost OK at booting.
But Shutdown animation has skipped.

Start animation runs (a little bit slower than before?)
Shutdown animation doesn't run, just stopping services messages then black screen.

Thanks @Melber Yup, I had to change back to the way I was processing the animation originally to stabilize it, and one of the drawbacks was a little slower. It should be a bit more representative of the machine speed, but still smooth.

Working on the shutdown still, something is very odd with the beta shutdown.

I can tell you the shutdowns work in virtualbox but not on my real production hardware. I've been trying to think up differences, 1 is that my virtualbox installs use mbr whereas the real installs use EFI. There are framebuffer differences, which could be related I supposed.

But I believe shutdown is not reliable with the previously existing themes either.

I agree, my desktops seem to be ok and show the shutdown perfectly, but my laptops dont. All my VM's do. I have not seen any issues with mx21 or 19 with this, it is have been very stable. But something is up, even the previous plymouth themes that did work in 21 dont on 23 shutdown. Curious as to why my earlier shutdown seemed to work much better as it is now using identicle code for display. Only the images are different now.

I am going to drop back in my testing and use exact older code and images and then work back up and see where the break happens. And also look at the shutdown messages and method there too. I see MUCH more text on mx23 at shutdown then I have before on any other's, thought it was just "beta" and shrugged it off, but now I am thinking I need to be looking at it.

Also curious, I downloaded debian 12 and ran through its plymouth themes and everything has stripped down to a "two step" method, which basically does not even have a shutdown!. And the latest plymouth themes with shutdown animation from freedesktop.org are also all showing.
