How to Update MX-18 to MX-21

Dear Friends,

MX-18 is buggy and I'd like to upgrade to MX-21. What steps are needed? I've been getting messages that I'm using an outdated version just recently
Also is there a newer version of Google chrome for either or both or these systems.

Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Thank You!
Best, Raphael

Personally, I'd back up your stuff and install clean.

There is no upgrade path from MX-18 to MX-19, and from MX-19 to MX-21 is only recommended for those who would be able to fix breakages. Sadly, an upgrade from MX-18 to MX-21 is very unlikely to work.

Okay Thanks!
How can I get mx21 on this Laptop?
The version of MX-18 I have has more bugs than carters got liver pills. it wasn't so bad when I first used it and it was installed by another person. Whom was quite familiar with many distros and Linux systems. But he's extremely difficult to track down. Hence I'm seeking help here.
Best,
Raphael

Well that very nice!
who's buddy?
This would all be more than enough if I was a astute LINUX student and knew much more about LINUX.
There is a lot of information in this link file:///C:/Users/user1/Downloads/mxum.pdf and many areas for error for a shall we say "novice."
Perhaps there is someone on this Forum that would be able to kinda walk a "new kid on the block" through this process? Yes.
Sincerely, Raphael

  • Just download the MX21.3 iso and write on a usb using the "Live Usb Maker" on your current MX.
  • Boot with that (Enter Bios settings if required, to take the usb to top in Boot sequence)
  • On live session you can save (copy) the current home folder to somewhere (access the MX 18 partition from left pane in file manager)
  • Yes, there is an option (during installation) to preserve home but you better not use that as there are many differences between them, you better keep/have a fresh, brand-new home.
  • Install on the same partition (select "root" for that partition under "use for" column, (that means"where to install MX"))

How can I get mx21 on this Laptop?..

Thank You! that makes a Little more sense and sounds like it could be accomplished with a "little help from my friends" here and perhaps locally.
How large of a USB would I need? I assume you mean thumb or flash drive. Yes?

Yep, flash drive / thumb .. any size that the iso fits . (I even have an old 2GB usb stick that always works)

Just , in case you're also thinking to make the live usb a "persistent" one, then as big as possible.

Wonderful!
Have you found any brand that is more reliable or durable than another?
Curious are there any "red flags" to be on the look out for while doing this process? like to make the best choices possible and get it right the first time.
Not sure if it was on here but i heard that there are some 5,000 different Linux systems that have come and gone. wow!
Thanks again and I hope no one gets offended if I should ask some questions that may seem like no-brainers to the well versed in Linux.
Cordially, Raphael

Actually, this is another topic.. I can just say SanDisks (some models) may not always work.. And my 2 very old (even from the first days of usb sticks) are Toshiba and USBest (though it seems to be a Chinese brand. That stick was just presented by the ISP)

Here's a couple of Attachments and I am not certain what should be checked or not used, etc...?! Or lets say the correct places to locate things either?
The Partition might be a bit tricky for me?
Are we certain my laptop can operate MX21.3? I posted the Specs in 2 previous posts starting with post #1.
Thank You,

You need to post your QSI every time you start a new thread like this. I, and the other members here, don't have the time to go hunting for an old one.

Just select the iso and the target usb stick (the one to be prepared), click "next".

Thank you!
I'm at the MX-Live - File manager window. There are 5 icons there with locks on each one. antiX , boot, EFI, cdrom.ico, version. Which one do I use?
I'd like to save the Home folder from MX-18 if possible. Not sure about dealing with the Partitions in that regard!? Please advise.
I can Close the MX Live Usb maker correct? On the MX-23.3 WildFlower window top middle it has this "Install MXLinux" Whats with that?
Do i need to go into the BIOS and change the BOOT order now? Phew!
;)

... But ... why image mode? (Ok, no harm) but the full-featured mode enables one to use the rest of the usb stick (to save/store files etc).. especially when it's a big sized stick, that space won't be wasted.

You can access the MX 18 partition clicking on "left pane". In case it asks pw. it's demo on live session.

(If you already booted with the live usb, you don't need "live usb maker" for anything . Just use the file manager to copy-paste your MX18's home folder to somewhere (just to backup) .. that's all)

Installed Google chrome. Didn't see Slimjet. I use Google chrome for most things. the HOME folder is on the Desktop.
I have like 79 updates but can't seem to give it the right PW? the user PW was demo and Super user PW was root. The PW I used on mx18 doesn't work. Keeps saying Authentication Failure. I assume I can remove the USB stick?

You need to use the pw for live session (which's demo) , not MX18's user pw. etc...

Of course you can use Chrome, Slimjet suggestion was just for it's lighter (it was removed from Popular Apps due to some issues, but one can install the deb directly from its site)

You can run the updates then click install if you like (and answer "yes" if it asks whether you'd like to save the changes for the installed system)

Thank You.
On the MX-21.3 WildFlower window top middle it has this "Install MXLinux" Whats with that?
Do i need to go into the BIOS and change the Boot order now? Phew!
Are you able to change to full-featured mode?

Since you're already on your live usb, no need to them.

You can just click "that" to begin installation (any time you like).

On the MX Linux Installer window. Do I choose Regular install using the entire disk Or Customize the disc layout > which was chosen by default. Just check NEXT Yes/No?
Boot order need changing now?
Apologize for all these questions but it's better to ask than have things blow up.
Thus far Linux 21.3 is real Sweet.

The "... entire disk" will "wipe" the whole disk and do everything for you (Auto-installation, partitioning etc.)

If you don't want to wipe the disk, choose the default one: "customize"

...Or if you don't mind wiping, just choose auto (Regular) ... (All data on entire disk will be erased)

(You don't need to do anything about Bios, boot order etc.)

Just click "next".

(Not an error: It just waits and enables users to make changes at that stage, one may not want to install grub etc.. )

What about Computer Network Names?
Computer name by default just says mx
Computer domain: example.com
SaMBa Server for MS Networking is also checked.
Please Advise.

You can leave them as they are if you like (if you won't seriously have a network)

If you like you can change the computer name to , say, ralph (or so) (you'll see that in terminal: say, as: yourusername@ralph )

In case you finish the installation successfully, don't forget to detach the usb stick before you reboot (it'll tell you at the end).

Cause sometimes users forget that and ask.. as it keeps booting the live usb stick rather than the installed system on disk :)

Do I Need a Root administrator Account/Root password?
I set up the Default User Account already.
Then there is Autologin and Save live desktop changes.
On second thought I'm going to leave the Default account without a PW then I won't need it every time I login

Set a pw. for root (that's something confused by many users) then (now or later) you can enable autologin .

(Having no pw. or just a space or autologin are different things. Shortly, best and recommended way is to have a normal pw. both for root and user and then if you like , enable autologin.)

Problem.
I checked and put a PW in Root administrator Account and hit Next and it greyed out and hasn't done anything. seems stuck! do I need to Abort and start again?
Might it be cause I didn't put a PW in the Default user PW boxes?

Yep. Roughly (depends on hardware).. most of it is "files are being copied..."

Anytime you like you can click "Back" (no need to abort/start again)

As you've found out this turned into something more than either of use expected.
Lots of information that your well aware of is a mystery to me.
By the way I liked the idea of Slimjet being a lighter version of Google chrome which tends to be a resource hog. But, I have no idea what one has or lacks over the other.
Like i use Google Voice frequently to send Text messages cause texting for me is too tedious.
Hopefully it will complete shortly and work beautifully.
Grazie mille.

Dear Friends,
Hope all is well.
As you can see in the attachment which upgrading from mx 18 to mx 21.3 it seems like its stuck at 12%. Been well over an hour and no changes. It stated somewhere that this typically takes 20 mins. or less depending on hardware.

A default password was installed and Auto login was checked. Which the attachment didn't show either of these steps.

Huckleberry Finn has been extremely helpful with this and I am ultimately waiting for him to respond.
In the meantime are there any suggestions or is this normal?

Thank You!

Somethings wonky! If I shut it down I'll have to re enter information like the PW's,etc...

Hmm.. yeah I have never had this problem, so.. I am at a loss too. Personally, I'd start over and see how it goes the second time. Those passwords, you'll need to type them more often, so you'd best remember them ;)

it seems to run fine Live but its stuck in cyberspace.
What do you mean by "Start Over?"
Spent all afternoon working on it.
I assume for now to leave the flashdrive in place and just shut it down or leave it on. But, don't think its going to do much. :-(

And then post #40 essentially agreed saying:
Huckleberry Finn wrote: Fri Feb 17, 2023 6:52 pm Yep. Roughly (depends on hardware).. most of it is "files are being copied..."

To give that a little perspective, using an official MX-21.3 ISO on a USB 3.1 flash drive and using a USB 3.0 motherboard port, all of my MX-21 Xfce installations have taken about 6 minutes to install, if even that. My hardware is nothing special (a 2019 second generation Ryzen 5 1600 AF 3.2 GHz and a SSD).

As I said, just to give a little perspective.

Not sure. It's long time ahead, I have installed MX.
It looks like Gigahenry007 has not set a "default user password".
But isn't a "default user password" obligatory to continue the installation process?

@Gigahenry007

You have to create a user password. You can select "Autologin" afterwards, but the system requires you to have a user password first, in order to complete the installation.

... Yes, you can shut down any time you like but you need to begin installation from step1 next time (but, nothing to worry, as you already know those steps you can quickly go on next next)

The 20 min. etc. is for older machines and usb 2.0 of course, on my single core 32 bit laptop it's about 15 min.

As already mentioned (and already recommended by me previously) enter a user pw. then if you like check the "autologin"..

Thank You for your help.
It is an official MX-21.3 ISO. I'm not sure if it's USB 3.1 flash drive, using a USB 3.0 motherboard port?
It's not indicated in the attachment but I did in fact. Set an Encrytion PW, Default user name and PW as well a Root PW. I was also asked to choose a Default keyring which I also set. It was set to Auto login as well.
All these steps seems to go well and it moves swiftly to 12% and indicates Installation in progress.
It hasn't changed in 5 hours. After resetting all the above at 3:16 am just for kicks I noted the hdd at 59%, mem 64% and cpu 1%. The cpu at a glance didn't get much higher than 4-5%.
Apparently I've done something incorrectly along the way? I have no idea what!?!?
In starting over again...does that mean formatting the USB? Download another MX 21.3 iso? If it does than please include an exact link for the download. Although I think the one on the flashdrive is geniune.

No, no, just you can boot once more with your live usb (any time you like) and click "install MX" ...

(The usb 3.1, 3.0, 2.0 etc are just to tell it may be faster/slower with them etc.. You don't need to do any extra things..)

In case it gets stuck again, you can post the /var/log/minstall.log

Where do I find this? /var/log/minstall.log. I should post it now as noted in the previous post due to the steps done early this morning.
Please advise.
Do i need to enter all new Passwords in all the places indicated and what about the Encryption one which wasn't mentioned in the original instructions. I took it upon myself to do that one in an act of desperation as it wasn't done the first time.

You need to open/send it just after the problem .. that's the path for it (in file manager) . Also you can find it in "Quick System Info" (from menu) (click the dropdown menu when you open QSI).

You know, if you encrypt the root (main) partition, then there must be a separate non-encrypted partition for /boot

Or, you can just encrypt the home partition (like I do) and go on..

(I guess the problem might be at that stage, it may be waiting for you about such things)

All anew ...

But again, since you now know how to, you can pass the first steps quickly, timezone, language, grub, pc name .. next next ...

then just username and pw. , root pw. , (and encryption password(s) if you want to encrypt..) that's all

In the meantime, setting a username all lowercase may be better (long story): i.e. raffaello rather than Raffaello for future, ease of use...

OK! but do I need brand new passwords?
I'm at the "Terms Of Use" page
Do I need to do encryption and or password? will it mess things up for any reason if I don't?
Thank You!

No. You may/may not use the same things (up to you).

(Also you may/may not use the same pw. for user and root)

At Regular install is it correct to Format the entire disk (sda) for MX Linux?

Regular (auto) installation will do all automatically. It'll wipe the whole disk first, then create (and format) partitions with required flags ... You just set language, username, user and root pw. etc..

Okay! I've put in all the information you suggested PW's and so on. I did not Encrypt this time. Used lower case for Default User Name.
Wait for at least 30 mins and pray this works.
The hdd is at 3% and the mem 17% and cpu 0% to 1% flashing between 0% to 1% always back to 0% then it jumps around to a higher percentage..the highest at a glance I noticed it at 28% a couple of times and 31% But, mostly in the lower percentages like 0%-10% and cycles. The hdd thus far is at 3% and the mem 17%.
Cheers!

The hdd is 5%, mem 36%, cpu is not dropping to 0% anymore 6%-7% with fluctuating higher numbers.
If this is actually doing an Installation it is slower than molasses on a winters day in Alaska. Wow! The USB ports are apparently 2.0 and one 3.0 which is the one I'm using.
Wondering if the Lexar flashdrive is in good shape for this?
Please advise.
Thank you!

Hallo!
Note the attachment which I've been seeing but thought I'd include it as a help.
Installing Google Chrome and wondering if Chromium might help get this to install correctly.
No matter what I do it stops at 12% Formatting and never changes. Installs on YouTube shows the installs are usually very brief and it done. Waiting for whats next...

It obviously takes that long time for that error (whatever causes that, being unable to format the partition).

Just at that point you can open/send the log file I mentioned.

This will open it:

Code: Select all

sudo featherpad /var/log/minstall.log

... Or at least on left pane click the "Live Log" tab (on that installation window) and see/post (copy-paste) it.

My best guess is that the laptop's hard drive is shot. If the log that Huckleberry Finn has requested you post confirms this, here's how to replace it with a new one:
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Toshiba+Sa ... ent/108390

On your laptop, this is a dead easy task. FWIW, a 250 GB Western Digital SSD is $40.00 CDN here in Toronto and I expect that it will be about the same price in Vermont.

Thanks for letting me the time differences. Sorry to upset you...
Where am I supposed to paste this? sudo featherpad /var/log/minstall.log. I thought it was the same as the QSI.
Do you mean if i do another install and see that Warning formatting window? OR NOW?
The specs needed for MX 21.3 seem to exceed what my computer has to offer? Yes/No?

Paste the log here in a new post.

MX 21.3 will not overwhelm your computer.

Yep. Just after you see that warning again or when it gets stuck etc.. (in case you decide to try installation once more) paste that in a terminal then press Enter.

Also follow the "Live Log" tab on left pane (on that installation window) will show what's going on.

The one I mentioned previously is this, as an alternative and easy way (and a new feature of QSI) :

When you open the QSI click the menu (where the pointer is in the below picture) then select minstall.log

(...again, after the issue appears.. otherwise no such info will be there) :

From the S.M.A.R.T. report, the only thing that may need attention is this:

Code: Select all

UDMA_CRC_Error_Count -O-R-- 200 200 000 - 1
This indicates that there was an error in the data feed to the hard drive. If this was a desktop, I'd recommend that the data cable be replaced, however, since it's a laptop, it might be enough to remove the hard drive, clean the contacts on both the cable and the hard drive with some rubbing alcohol on a QTip and then firmly reseat the hard drive.

This is also reported:

Code: Select all

G-Sense_Error_Rate -O-R-- 099 099 000 - 2
This states that there were two errors due to external vibration. But, these can be discounted because it's a mechanical drive in a ten year old laptop and there are going to be some vibrations as a matter of course.

Grazie,
This is what I see when I open the QSI. If I tick the small blue icon in the upper left corner it opens up a drop down list and its set to '"Open Same As other windows"
I'm considering buying a NEW thumbdrive today and downloading it again.
PLEEZE supply the exact link.
When I plug the thumbdrive into my Windows puter a red line appears across the entire properties tab and says there is like 14kb of space remaining "a hairline of space." This is a 16GB thumbdrive why is it nearly maxxed out of space I wonder?
Don't know what the red line indicates???
QSI_2023-02-19_12-33-30.png
I'll remove the hdd and clean and make certain its secure.

Ah, your QSI version is just a bit 1-2 versions back, that's why no such menu..

Simply issue the command in a terminal :

Code: Select all

sudo featherpad /var/log/minstall.log

This is the latest MX 21.3 , updated on Feb 15 (just for you asked) :

http://it.mxrepo.com/Downloads/Snapshot ... ry_x64.iso

... And the sha512 file to check if you can:

http://it.mxrepo.com/Downloads/Snapshot ... iso.sha512

When I Paste this into the Terminal. Note the attachement is what I get.
Terminal2023-02-19_13-01-24.png
sudo featherpad /var/log/minstall.log

This I'd use for the download/install correct? http://it.mxrepo.com/Downloads/Snapshot ... iso.sha512 cause thats what it looks like when I open it.
Huck! do you feel the hdd is bad and needs replacement at this time?
Thank You both

The pw. is demo on live session, just enter that . (But again, it will show the info regarding the issue only after it occurs, cause it writes it step by step what happened when etc.. only after that happens..)

The hdd is not bad, I also have another idea (we'll go on)

Download clicking the 1st link , the sha512 is just to check whether the iso is correct (true/genuine) and whether it was downloaded successfully, every bit ..

Can i check the remaining space on the current thumbdrive?
If 21.3 requires about 2GB why would a 16GB thumbdrive be almost totally used space wise?
Thank you!
Huck did you notice the attachment in Post # 85? I guess its a older version according to Eadwine Rose. Hmm?!

It could be on its last legs. Thumb drives generally don't have the longevity of an installed HDD or SSD.

The only thing I said somewhere was you could DL a newer version of 21.3, which is the snapshot that Adrian makes each month, Feb's one.

But given how much trouble you are having, I am not even gonna suggest that one for you anymore.

That's plenty big enough. It's also about the smallest capacity drive that you'll be able to find these days.

Question:
When I did the first download and install I had a working MX-18.
Can I use my Windows machine to download a NEW ISO for MX-21.3 and then use in the intended computer?
I did get the download done on the MX-18/MX21.3 computer but its only a Live version.
Not sure what will happen if I pull the thumb drive out and try to create the ISO? I assume it would crash.
At any rate if I shut down the MX-18/MX21.3 computer I'll lose the latest MX-21.3 download I'm guessing.
Suggestion about the best way to start this to minimize any errors this time.
Thank You,
Raphael

Certainly. Download the ISO to Windows and then also download a utility called Rufus from this link:

https://rufus.ie/en/

You will use Rufus to write the ISO to the USB drive. Using Rufus is pretty straight forward. Just remember to select GPT under Partition Scheme. Otherwise just accept the defults.

Hallo~
rufus page1.jpg
I'm using the Portable version 3.21.
How much time should it take to get to next window of rufus? it doesn't appear to be doing anything yet. See attachment. Just one quick line ran across the bottom where is says READY.
It appears it started on its own..but none the choices are working in the any of the windows yet. Like the Partition where you said to enter GPT
Dunno how these apps works Sorry!
Thank You!

Close Rufus, insert the USB drive into the Windows computer and then launch Rufus again.

Feeling a bit silly about now.
Is the GPT the only thing I need to change before Starting? Like Cluster size or Target, etc.

That's the only change you have to make. just accept all the other default settings and click on Start at the bottom. depending on the speed of your Windows box, it should take 10 - 15 minutes to complete. If it finishes quicker than that, so much the better.

So fine :)
  • Just click "Install" and if you like only select the auto installation.
  • Then in case it gets stuck again: either the command above, or QSI and select minstall.log (then copy-paste here), (as in posts #72 and 79)
  • Also during installation click the "Live Log" tab on left pane and follow (copy-paste here if needed, copy especially beginning from last lines when it gets stuck).
  • Any time it asks for password (say in a terminal) : demo

So, it creates the efi partition successfully then passes to sda2 as the root partition and cannot format that (For whatever reason).

Yes , sda is :

/dev/sda Hitachi model: HTS541064A9E680 size: 596.17 GiB
block-size: physical: 4096 B logical: 512 B speed: 3.0 Gb/s type: HDD rpm: 5400
serial: <filter> rev: A480 scheme: GPT

Just: have you tried custom installation (the default one) ?

(You can first create partitions with GParted)

(Just to make sure whether it's something with the auto-installer, that maybe a good feedback btw.)

In the worst case: We can create 2-3 small partitions and then scan with badblocks first, then custom install there without re-formatting (on purpose) (also "small partitions" "purposely" just to make it quick to scan..)

My $.02. What Huckleberry Finn is proposing here will be a great learning experience for you. But at the end, even if it's successful, you are still going to have a hard drive that needs imminent replacement because its bad blocks are no longer being reallocated to new ones. If this were not the case, the bad blocks would have automatically replaced with some of the blocks held in reserve and the installer would have been able to format the partition successfully. I think that it's time to cut your losses and buy a new SSD so that you can get this upgrade to MX 21 completed.

edited for spelling

When you go to the store, there will likely be three main brands of SSD available: Kingston, Western Digital, and Samsung. Kingston SSDs will be the lowest priced of the three but also the lowest quality. For reference, here's what an SSD that will fit your laptop looks like:

On your laptop, this is a dead easy task. FWIW, a 250 GB Western Digital SSD is $40.00 CDN here in Toronto and I expect that it will be about the same price in Vermont.
What else do I need to do other than replace it? It's just a matter of removing a few screws? I had another hdd but its only 160GB and it was in another Toshiba laptop.
i can find one of those hdd you suggested for about 30$ US.
Why are you so convinced that the existing hdd is shot? Typically in Windows when they get bad there are alot of Bad sectors to the point where you can even run a CHKDSK..very slow loading anything, etc..you know the routine. I don't mind a bit more effort into this. but not another afternoons worth if at all possible.
Thanks again.

Ok. Ralph told me he wanted to try a straightforward "custom" installation.. And let's try it.

Ralph:

Can you open "GParted" from menu on live session, then maximize the window and take a screenshot?

Edit: The screenshot utiliy is in menu (it "was" on panel also (iirc) in previous releases)

By switching to a new USB drive, downloading the ISO multiple times and switching to Rufus as the usb drive creator, you have eliminated all three of these as the possible point of failure. The only component left is the hard drive because it's the static common element in all the previous failures.

So fine :)

Now: Right-click on that grey area (or the "unallocated" line): "New"

Click the "New Size" box (or you can use the tab key) : 20480

(it's already ext4 by default..) ... "Add" , click Apply.

(A 20 GiB partition for now, quick to scan ...)

In fact, you can even try to install with this.

Swap can be created later but with this layout you'll need to open space first .. It's best (simplest) to do it from the very beginning.

You can try installation any time you like now.. either right now (after closing GParted) or any time later.

Just choose the custom install (the default one already)

Success! Thank You beyond words... It seems in this case there was something "buggy" in the Installer.?
I'd like use Google Chrome if possible? If I knew what features Chromium aka Slimjet offers in comparison I wouldn't mind a browser that is lighter resource wise.
I do use Google Voice to make rare calls but mostly so that I can text people using the computer instead of a cell.
I assume if I do install Google Chrome it will be saved correct?
Must admit this has been quite an adventure and I am amazed how you get so refined at this. Whats the secrets?
There are 23 Updates showing and assume I need to install them

Both GParted and MX Installer "Custom" were able to format with no issues.

So, I still guess there might be a bug about the auto-installer, cause the partition was still labelled MX18 and the other one was unknown etc...

Yep, update all :)

In fact, my plan was a bit different, I just wanted to not confuse you more and more..

Any time you like we can create a swap partition (just in case) and more important, we can scan the partition (but since it's about 600 GB it'll take "hours" , that's why I was thinking about a small partition :) )

Just the user's pw. (that's requested by default on MX21, root's was the default on previous releases, MX19 and before...)

Shortly, whenever you see an authentication dialog (also in terminal for sudo) just enter your user pw.

(In case root's pw. is requested particularly, it'll tell you that .)

Boot with live usb, then open "Chroot Rescue Scan" from menu

It'll find your installed MX, press Enter.. when you see this

chroot>

issue this command:

Code: Select all

mx-user
(Click the menu "select user to modify" ...) then enter a new pw. for that user (you).. Apply, close, shutdown.

Boot the installed MX.

Once you are back in and have your user and root passwords again, it MIGHT be an idea to actually start using the root password for when it asks for the root password. You can change that behavior back to what you were used to.

When you start MX Tweak, and then go to the last tab, Other, in the bottom it says: password for administrative tasks: user / root.

You'll want to check root there instead of user.

Of course if it is easier for you to just use your user password for everything, just leave things alone. I, personally, found using the user pass for root stuff very confusing.
