Posting from the live beta2. Booted straight up, no issues. Fed it my wireless passcode and bingo. Pretty spunky for a live disk on this old P4 1024 laptop.

Question -- I have an antique Dell PIII-700MHz/512MB with a load of M8. I've tried straight antiX and just don't care for it. (No offense intended at all, I'm too much of a GUI weenie.) Any chance this woul perform equally well? Be nice to have a current OS on that old beater.

Wow! I mean freaking Wow!

Post now live from my antique Dell lappy with a smokin' 700MHz PIII and 512MB RAM. And it's actually (subjectively) as quick if not quicker than the P4/1024MB Vaio I was playing with earlier. The RealTek PCMCIA wireless card was picked up automagically (normally have to use ndiswrapper), fed it my wireless code, and here I am.

During boot, there were some antiX messages about disabling or removing services, something like lean, leaner, leanest. Anybody wanna tell me what that's about?

At any rate, it looks like the load of M8 on this thing is probably not long for this world.

That is entirely to make the Live system boot faster and use less memory.

It is controlled by the antiX= boot parameter which is explained briefly here:

These are options that are only available in antiX

lean -- disable some services including wicd for a fast boot
mean -- disable dhclient (Internet connection)
Xtralean -- disable more services for a faster boot
nodbus -- disable dbus service
[...]

NOTE: Four of these options are combined into the single antiX= option. For example antiX=LMX.

L stands for lean
M stands for mean
X stands for Xtralean
D stands for nodbus

That is just an HTML version of the bootloader help that is available via "F1 Help" in the bootloader. I believe anticapitalista is adapting the help screens for MX.

You can look at the file /etc/init.d/antiX-disable-services to see which services are disabled by each parameter (or letter). Some (many?) of the services on those lists don't exist or are not installed. To see which services actually get disabled use the super secret "db++" boot option. the info is saved in /var/log/live/antiX-init.log which can be useful if some of it scrolls off the screen. If the colored text bothers you use the "noco" (nocolor) boot option to turn it off or use "loco" (lowcolor) to get a slightly different color scheme.

Just remove the "antiX=MLX" boot parameter if you don't want any services disabled. Actually, you only need to remove the "MLX".

Fresh install of latest MX-14 Beta. CD burned with default Windows 7 app.

Other than needing to unmute the sound all the basics appear to be working ootb.I had my concerns but Youtube videos play with no problem (yet) in Qupzilla. No crashing or burning so looking pretty solid so far.

Finally made it in and I'm running Beta 2 (a build within the past 24 hours or so). Got it to boot live on both of my systems, a Gateway 2000 Series 17" portable and a Lenovo 3000 Series laptop.

The Gateway uses a Broadcom 4311 wireless firmware driver, which is half and half as far as distributions including it; MEPIS and antiX usually do, this release doesn't detect it if it's there. (Anti may recall from past discussions that there are two Broadcom firmware drivers that should be included from Debian: b43 and b43legacy, but NOT the STL or whatever that other one is; it causes conflicts and doesn't work as well as b43 does.

On the Lenovo, I have Intel Pro Wireless 3945 firmware; that is included with nearly all distros, and that is working fine. That probably means I'll try installing here first.

I believe I have a binary drop of the b43 package; I'll try to bring it in manually to see if that's what is missing on the Gateway and I'll try to install tomorrow if I can get the time.

Both systems boot just fine; so far the wireless firmware (just the Broadcom b43 driver) is the only thing I notice that's missing so far.
