where did you get libpng12-0? that package is not in the debian repo.
libpng16-16 is in buster.
libpng12-0: It comes up in both MX Linux Package installer AND Synaptic. If it's not in Debian or MX I have no idea why or how.
libpng16-16 is installed. SP_Flash_Tool insists on libpng12. Maybe I can add a symlink to see if it can be fooled to use 16-16.

Perhaps show you're activated repo's. Someone might have added a stretch repo?
EDIT:
Check where you got it from with:

That's good and time-saving info. Is it possible to preserve /home in the installer if /home is located on the root partition?
It should from past experience. I haven't had time to install MX19 rc yet.
It has worked for me in the past no matter where it's located, including the last RC1 in VBox. It saves me having to make all the HDPI scaling adjustments needed with a HDPI screen, plus I have all the xfce4-hardware-monitor widgets still going in the panel, since we ship that now with MX 19.

ok tough typing with arthritis - but here is some info. installed the rc1 on a thinpad x series 201 first and then an x seires 220 for my office. so far all is superb. i installed the hplip in the mx package area and both print wireles 8600 hp multiprinter. i seem to have 2 - because i am used to having to add the printer but it prints no issues. maybe i will delete the 2nd and see what happens. there is pdf there too that was checked but the first 8600 is highlighted. not sure that the pdf thing is about. I never saw that beofre.
the wireless. both work. i do not recalle which one did what looking back to yesterday waking at 4 am as i do. but i ran them both live to check out wireless and a few others. the 220 the 2nd install not so much checking but they both were hooked up prior to install foir wireless. i noticed that on live mode both just needed paswword and all was good. i remember notcing - and this is the fuzzy one - whcih one did what. but when i installed rc1 on both of them and then tried to connect. one was easy and similar to live mode and the other was a bit of a bear - i ended up having to add a wifi network even though it found it and then had to go in and do the password stuff and the anomaly i found strange and inconsistent but hey - it worked. and they both have since yesterday. though the 201 is my daily downstairs and daily work laptop. the faster 220 with more ram and ssd thoug less gb's is my office laptop.
wacom tablets work using gimp, krita, and mypaint. and the scroll bar on the top left of the wacom tablet scrolled too too. no noy tutu - he he a little humor.
the suspend and lock works and when resuming the login does show up unlike in 18.3 where you get the black screen and need to either just type the password which brings up login screen or touch the trackpad or mouse cursor move to bring up login screen so that is a major fix in 19.
not sure what else i was going to comment on but damn nice distro and release.
thanks to evryone on the team
anyway... those are my observations. sorry for typos.

A patched Lucky Backup is done and should be seen as an upgrade in the main repos pretty soon.

Sorry, been away from the computer — this is correct. Since I only installed the RC today, and haven't messed about with repositories at all, if it shouldn't be there, why is it?

MX Repo Manager
Individual sources tab
the bottom list is sources.list and it has a check box but no text next to the check box. The others have a deb http:// line.
