I know that I am not the first to download the final, but i will kick off this thread.
Download by torrent. Quick and complete. Copied to a USB with MX Live USB maker, again quick. Loaded onto an SSD no problems. So, I am up and rolling with MX-18 64 bit. Grateful thanks to the Dev Team.

Very good news, Gordon! We got an early jump on the torrents so we could have plenty of seeds out there for this morning.

there is still No Direct ISO download, as yet
& most Torrent Site(s) have No Seeders, as yet.
ie: only the MX-18rc1 is the latest & most current release.
Edit on that: - - found Three Peers

Excellent work, I downloaded, I recorded the ISO in a USB with Live Maker and I just installed it on my laptop. It is incredible the speed with which one works, I like the image of grub and the Plymouth. Thank you very much for the Christmas Gift!

it's working well, so far
there was Just Two Updates, to be found.
BTW: how do you change that Information,, that is displayed on the screen ?
ie: it's in the American Format - date format ...
yet the TZ is correctly set to Perth, AU
keyboard is US, of course.

I installed MX18_x64 from a USB, after obtaining the Sourceforge direct download, creating the install medium using Live USB Maker.
I unchecked the boot splash
Used MX Tweak to uncheck single click for Thunar and Desktop and set as Horizontal Panel
set 2 rows for Windows Switcher, 11pt for the clock, appending %P to Line for am/pm indicators
Reversed Whisker Menu (Position categories next to panel button)
Checked show menu for Firefox, importing stored HTML bookmarks, added Australian Spelling and Colorful Tabs extensions, set blank for home/new tabs, deleted unwanted search engines, checked smooth scrolling
Set Thunar to show detailed list and unchecked Automatically expand columns..., set left pane as Tree View
Used Disk Manager to mount shared partitions eg. 'Data'
Unchecked Automatically resize window settings in VLC Player
Manually unchecked Show Frame in Notification Area preferences
Unchecked Power Manager show icon for Desktop use
To Do:
Add Australian Spelling/Thesaurus via Synaptic
Change windows buttons to show flat and permit drag and drop
etc
Well done and thanks
**
BTW: how do you change that Information,, that is displayed on the screen ?
ie: it's in the American Format - date format ...
yet the TZ is correctly set to Perth, AU
Same here for Melbourne, with US date format on mouse over

I enabled compositing and set a transparent image for Panel background. For this I substitute Clock for the default Orage, since Clock allows for a transparent background**. The US date format still occurs however. Not sure if there is a global setting for this one, although there hasn't been a need to adjust in the past.
*just remembered to copy over hidden file .face for user icon.
**When using a transparent Panel background image, the MX Updater wireframe default icon went to a grey square but corrects itself upon logout/login
Edit:
Have tried disabling the boot splash in Boot Options in the newly installed MX-18 a couple of times now and restarting, to no effect.
MX-18 Grub was installed per defaults to Root, Grub itself adjusted in MX-17 (since updated to MX-18 per instructions for creating additional source file)

Mouse over what? And with "information on the screen" do you mean the conky in top middle?

Mouse over=When you hover over the Panel clock and the full date is displayed,
EDIT:
My date formats all look good now. Perhaps rebooting and updating has sorted it.

The date display format is determind through the selected lang-locale not through the timezone you are in.
Just logout and select your locale "Australian English, Australia" in the upper right corner to have the LANG set to en_AU.utf8
and the date will be displayed in the corresponding locale format definition.

On this laptop would not boot correctly until I added the
after the quiet line in grub , now boots normally.
The artwork and themes, login are really beautiful.
So far no issues other than conky bug already addressed.
Great job by all the antiX-MX team, really impressed.
Just an aside would not boot on my iMac 2007 vintage,
will create an iso later today that should work on it, and will update this thread then.
cheers,

On this laptop would not boot correctly until I added the

The artwork and themes, login are really beautiful.
So far no issues other than conky bug already addressed.
Great job by all the antiX-MX team, really impressed.
Just an aside would not boot on my iMac 2007 vintage,
will create an iso later today that should work on it, and will update this thread then.

This kernel bug and a workaround solution was explained here in the forum a couple of times.
Two options:
A - disable the S-Video port with the kernel parameter video=SVIDEO-1:d
B - install and run linux kernel 4.9
Further the conky display issue where solved with the released version "MX-18_x64 Continuum Dec 20 2018 ".
version you are running is still MX-18RC1.

Jerry,
Had run into this issue with previous versions, and with the help of google, chased it down and made notes in case it happened again.
fehlix,
thought the normal du && dug would have brought me to final.
*NOTE: after migration, the MX version recorded by the system will remain that of your original installation.
cheers,

Right, I understand. The conky display issue, is a bit special, and might not have got fully fixed through migration,
as some changes had to be made with the users home dir regarding the fonts-cache used by conky. Need to check and see to add this to migrations instructions.

My mx18 install including torrent download, plus tweaking of everything on my Desktop was completed in under 2 hours. This includes listening to Christmas music, swaying and cuddling my 18 month old grandson, having him nap in my arms for 45 minutes.
A simply wonderful build team.

Good stuff, Gordon...how'd you check the number of countries downloaded through torrents?

Paul. I'm using Qbittorrent which pops up a small flag beside each user downloading. There are so many using torrents at present that some are quite slow when compared with my run yesterday. The whole job, download, make a usb, then install was just over 30 minutes.
Edit The ip addrerss pops up too. At present there are four from US, a couple in Germany and about half of the total are using Transmission for the
download.

Gordon was asking about other MX torrents previously posted...he wasn't sure if they were legitimate.
Turns out that MX-18 Beta and RC had been posted by DEMONLORD and I mentioned that he is an Admin at linuxtracker.org.
Today, I sent DEMONLORD a PM asking him to take down the Beta and RC...usually takes 24-36 hours to get a response.
Do you know him/her?

The discussion started here, when I commented about downloading torrent files & Jerry queried the source.

Then I uploaded the images from Linux tracker which had DemonLord as the uploader.
Conclusion was that these uploads were unofficial.

I booted the new iso from a usb several times. and it eats the memory and I can not print a screen because it goes black and I have to turn off the notebook. With acpi = off it works but wifi does not activate.
In the previous one, this does not happen to me. I report this problem in mx 18 beta

A workaround could be to install 17.1, if it works fine on that machine, and just do the migration to MX 18 without the kernel upgrade.

there is a nosavestate boot code in the live boot menus as well that will prevent the system from using the save state

This is sticky so you only need to do it once and saving state will be disabled in future boots.

Archive.org uploads are done. Now with the slideshow yoinked from mxlinux.org!
https://archive.org/details/MX18386
https://archive.org/details/MX18X64
I read in the archive.org blog that they track download numbers, but I don't know if they expose that data to regular users.
Edit: It looks like a "view", which is shown on the page, means a download of at least one file from that page, not just a hit in a browser:
Measuring use.
The Internet Archive maintains a measure of use we call a download or view.
Views work like this:
Each item has an view counter.
The view counter is increased by one when a user engages with the media in an item. This is done, for example, by pressing the play button in an audio/video player, turning pages in the bookreader or downloading data files from the item.
A user can only increase the view count of a particular item once per day.
Downloads of files and engagements with the website’s various players and viewers are treated in the same way.
If a user views and/or downloads from an item multiple times on the same day that user’s activity is only counted as one view on that item.
So we could add those to the SF and torrent numbers to get a rough idea of downloads.

Thinkpad 600x 2646-8EU (2000)
This really pushes the limits of how old of a computer MX-18 can run on, but MX pulls it off!
Display Color issue is now fixed out-of-the-box -- THANK YOU!
but Audio Sound issues persist and still require a manual solution:
- download latest old firmware:
ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/firmware ... 29.tar.bz2 (2015-02-20)
- right click in Thunar extract here
- copy cs46xx folder
- open Root Thunar
- paste to /lib/firmware/
- open terminal "sudo modprobe snd-cs46xx"
- MX select sounds, chose it and apply.
Anyway, MX-18 is great (e.g., with the very up-to-date non-sse Debian Kernel or the AntiX 486 LTS Kernels, and a recent Palemoon non-sse2 browser) really old laptops like this are still useful ~19 years later!

I now have final, no future stigma of RC. No re-tweaking. is that correct?
All thing are working well. Totally stable , no crash in over 10 days of beta and rc1.
Running a kernel less than 2 months old, a Distro dated three days ago, and a BIOS-- the latest, 4 months old.
Wow, the developer team really cranked out a smooth machine.
Thanks. I think the release information should mention the LTS nature of the kernel, making this stable Debian install viable for years to come, for those that do not like to upgrade.
Now after a few days, I will do a classic 3 partition install for the production system. And this is fourth partition will be a backup or available for experimentation.

Just upgraded 17.1 to 18 on the Skylake Acer E5 Optimus laptop. Nvidia-driver was removed, but I reinstalled it after a reboot to 4.19 kernel. However, Bumblebee GPU switching was still broken as in this bug report:
The nvidia installer seems to do its job, but when I reboot and try to run a command on primusrun or optirun I get the following error:
/usr/bin/primusrun: line 41: warning: command substitution: ignored null byte in input
primus: fatal: failed to load any of the libraries: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/nvidia/libGL.so.1:/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/nvidia/libGL.so.1:/usr/lib/nvidia/libGL.so.1
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/nvidia/libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/nvidia/libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
/usr/lib/nvidia/libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
But after I installed virtualgl and virtualgl-libs:i386 on 64-bit, optirun worked immediately, even in Wine, where I had to run "optirun -b primus" before. Primusrun seems to be dead for Bumblebee, though. D_O's going to change the Nvidia-installer to add those packages, but the manual needs some changing.

@ entropyfoe. Like your comment of no re-tweaking. After years of trying to make things look better, I have given up tweaks and use the OS just as it arrives. The left-hand side panel, basic wallpaper and screen layout are fully acceptable as is. With no cosmetic changes to make, the system is put to use without delay. Yes,there are a few additions, qBittorrrent and choice of Conky immediately, a video editor and Audacity, later when they are needed.

I am constantly tweaking. And in my mind it always looks better and easier to use with each tweak. Of course it is pretty darn good if left alone.

That is one of the really good properties of MX, it can be left alone. Reminds me of one of the aviation navigational aids we looked after nearly 70 years ago. A team came from HQ every couple of years to do a so called overhaul. They did tweak some settings but once they had departed, we put all the adjustments back to where they had been and the equipment kept running perfectly. IMHO many of the reported bugs in MX, are the result of unnecessary tweaks.

Depends what you tweak, though.
Aesthetic tweaks - themes, icons, wallpaper, conky - are fun! (YMMV) and don't affect the system.
I never touch the left horizontal panel, because I'm used to it in MX and it makes sense to me (when I use Gnome desktop I leave the Dash on the left edge as well).
But I add a small horizontal panel at the bottom to act as a dock.

hey all, thanks for a stable-fast release and for implementing encryption in MX18 installer :)
tried MX with 18beta first (interested to check out luks with mx) and then RC1 and now MX18 official.. i only have one issue on boot time. possibly plymouth related (?).
install process with encryption finishes succesfully everytime, but boot would get stuck on plymouth theme after input of luks passphrase. have to press F1 to go to verbose mode for boot to actually continue.. otherwise it stays stuck on that screen for ever.
tried different plymouth themes, and in some of them i get no input box for luks passphrase). in other plymouth themes i just get stuck there as mentioned above. till i press F1 and escape boot theme.
any ideas/fixes/workarounds?
thanks,
d.

Any reason the live USB shows as antiXlive when loaded on an existing machine?
I guess it's the second description that newer versions of gparted show besides the label.

I think b/c the entire Live system was worked out by the antiX developers.

Everything works perfect in MX 18 x64, only when I use Firefox and Thunderbird at the same time freeze the machine at times, if I use only Thunderbird there is no problem. This is a situation that happened to me in MX 17 that's why I stopped using Firefox and I think I'm going to uninstall it in MX 18 and use Vivaldi or Opera.

To Gordon Cooper and all the tweakers/non-tweakers....
What I meant was I went from the release candidate, which had all my tweaks (syanaptic packages added, wall paler, conky, panel shortcuts, automounting the data disk...), and by doing the final synaptic update, I get to the final without having to download again, make a USB, install and re-tweak. inxi -F shows the install as final. Not that it takes that much time and effort !
But it is done.
Then I was going to do a full install on the three partitions (/, swap, and /home), but I saw the upgrade path in place described on the forum. So I gave it a shot.
So I booted int that MX-17 install, ran synaptic updates (133 in total, including some scary stuff removing some nvidia stuff), but all went well. I then could use the MXPI to add the 4.19 kernel, a reboot, and another MX-18 is born, but it has all the tweaks I had set-up in MX 17.1 over the past few months.
Like Stevo, I am always tweaking, adding packages, finding small inconveniences that can be improved, adding automation etc. Maybe I should look at those thunar special actions that are new for example.
Nothing major, stability is always a goal. Time to back up all the data to the back-up drive which I have not done in a while, and when all is set up, I will do a snapshot or a clonezilla image.

New user here.
Now I might be doing something wrong, but creating an encrypted USB install is failing on MX-18. Works fine on MX-17.
Fails with this error message on first boot:
"Preparing for passphrase first-boot reset. Reset Aborted: wrong passphrase in passphrase file"

64 bit.
I can't duplicate that here.
My process was I took the iso, used MX-Live-USB-Maker and the encrypt checkbox, and "full-featured" mode. Again, just like mx17.
So I'm not sure what's going on. I suggest using the commanline version and see if there is any better luck.

Okay, thanks for trying.
Not sure if it matters, but I did turn on static persistence before the first boot... maybe that was causing some sort of issue.
At any rate, I've got 17 working, and that's good enough for now.

Up to 4.19.9 now there! And apparently with a new metapackage that makes it bootable with Secure Boot! Will that work with MX if I port it over? Hmmm...

Upgrade from 17.1 to 18 happened seamlessly for me; one day Conky told me I was running 17.1, the next day it told me I was on 18. I installed the newer Kernel, but everything else is just the same!
Thanks for making it all so easy.

I'm not having any trouble with enabling static persistence after making an encrypted usb stick.
however,
the cli backend, live-usb-maker, has an option (selectable in its menu) to set the password at time of creation rather than at first boot. maybe that would work better for you.

Hello to all of you !
First congrats to the MX team GREAT JOB !! and ... MX Linux is on the top spot of the Distrowatch ranking ( if you select "the last 7 days) super !!
Here no problems with all heavy tweaking done even encrypted running at the moment, just one remark for the Dutch speaking ones among us, if you make a snapshot and choose to make a full copy, deselect "video's" , the name video's with the quote before the "s" remains there in the snapshot gui, even after deleting the video's folder in user/home en /home.
If i deselected the "video's", all worked perfect.
This release is really fast !! I told before MX LINUX RULES !!
To all a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year already !!

needs to be updated for MX-18, time permitting,
to agree with the release notes:

Yeah, I haven't done that page yet. Redid the Wikipedia entry though today, which required rewriting our MX Tools page so I could link to it and uploading a new desktop image--does that count? And reworked the HELP file for MX Updater with new image and the secret autoremove trick. And have redone the ISO list about 100 times...
So have faith.

Yes, I imagine there are a ton of details in wrapping up the new release.
Just was looking for something and found the anomaly. :)
MX-18 is really sweet. I installed the final ISO just to check it out.
The rc1 was working fine
as was the b1 that it replaced.
You all have done a great job, again.

Well, I got around to installing MX-18 this morning. Clean install on a clean partition. This has to be one of the worst installation experiences with any Linux distro that I've ever tried.
Boring. Absolutely, stunningly boring.
The initial install worked flawlessly, and very quickly. Nothing hung, or generated error messages. Nearly all I had to do was sit there and watch. I didn't have to fiddle with anything or reboot and start over. I mean, really. You MX devs have apparently under-estimated how a dodgy installation process can make the end user feel....well....needed, I guess.
And to add insult to injury, after the install MX 18 booted up without issue or error. I was able to quickly find and install the programs I use frequently. They all work. I set up access to my Windows network drives without isnsue.
Next time, please try harder to make the installation something that makes the end user feel more involved...engaged... I haven't felt this unnecessary since my daughters became teenagers.
All tongue in cheek of course. Great job folks. So far MX18 has been a joy to use!

Have a close look - space invaders on the console on live iso.
Boot iso with cheat bp=1 then type space-evaders
To escape and continue the boot after the game has finished, type exit

First debian-based install since 2006.
Only used it for a few hours so far and basically have a very mixed bag:
Here are my issues and nitpicks, in no specific order:
[*]The default theme is... not as good as it looks in screenshots. Half of it looks great, half of it looks like it's a custom theme from Windows XP.
[*]Found out after half an hour when I tried to set my panel as transparent that no compositor was running by default, but that Compton is preinstalled (but again, no compositor was started by default)
[*]The image is bloated beyond belief. A lot of things are just things not needed, I spent an hour going through and uninstalling about a third of everything, but a few things are also confusing: Why are there four package managers preinstalled?
[*]Chromium bug: Min and Max buttons disappear when maximized. I have not tried Chrome, don't want to. Also default font size is HUGE for some reason. Not the case in Manjaro Xfce or Windows 10.
[*]Speaking of package managers... I had a fun time trying to install Spyder3. The three first times I looked for it, the package manager(s) found it but refused to install due to some issue where it thought the package was empty, basically. Same with Youtube-dl. Then suddenly it worked. Slow servers? Or something else?
[*]Speaking of more package management: When I was busy uninstalling and installing stuff to my liking, I saw 5 packages constantly sitting on the "held back" list. Then suddenly the update notified popped up and told me those five were ready to be updated? Is this normal behavior in Debian? Just wondering.
This is what i can come up with for now. As I said this is my first debian-based distro since 2006.
In case anyone wonders, I got into Linux late 2005, and ran the following back then: OpenSuse, Ubuntu (first "Big" release, when Ubuntu sort of exploded and was in all the papers), Debian Stable, Debian Testing, Mint. Then I got a new computer and I never got around to fiddle with the multiboot.
Started with Linux again this may, and have exclusively run Arch-based distros this time: Antergos, pure Arch, SwagArch, Manjaro. Wanted to broaden my skills a bit so right now installing alongside Manjaro: This, Siduction Xfce, and OpenSuse Plasma.

Hi; welcome to the forum.
You will never get consensus on theming, or any other graphics issues! However, alternative themes are included, many more are available online, and customising themes isn't too hard.
MX Linux is intended to be as light as possible, and usable on quite old hardware. Compositing is off by default to help with that. Mention is made in the manual.
The choice of installed software is made by the developers to give a balance, and options, to suit as many users as possible. Why does it matter how large the image is? You can either ignore things you don't want, hide them from the menu, or as you have done uninstall them. HDD space is not really an issue in today's world.
I'm not a Chromium user, and it's not pre-installed, so can't comment on that I'm afraid. There have been no other reports yet, so something to watch for perhaps.
Your issues with package management were most probably due to mirrors updating. It takes a while for everything to sync.

I reinstalled MX-18 64 today because I was unsure on a couple of issues including finding a Live_usb_storage folder in home the first time (possibly I modified and tried to save a lot of live changes).
I obtained the *.iso via the torrent v direct download as previously.
Most of all, and I still have this issue, being that I cannot disable the boot splash via Boot Options.
However, this time I noticed that there is no Screensaver setting icon in Settings Manager. It should be there right? It always was.

The screensaver has been removed as a default replaced by lightlocker which locks the screen to lightdm. Screesaver is available in MX Package Manager Popular Apps.

Thanks for taking the time. I am gearing this to be my fallback / "serious work" distro since well... I will be running one bleeding edge (Siduction unstable), one "as bleeding edge as Manjaro allows me to" (Manjaro Unstable, which basically is Arch Stable) and one pretty damn stable but rolling (SuSe Tumbleweed).
I know all about the theming. I will go into that eventually. Today is game day (which for me means sitting playing CRPGs all day

).
As for the size of the image: I guess it's just my old Window roots, but my first instinct installing any OS or DE is to look for, and uninstall anything "bloatware-ish".

I've been running manjaro stable for close to 5 years now in addition to mx, I've not found Manjaro's standard iso releases to be much less full-featured than mx. In other words, if mx is bloated, so is manjaro unless you install via Architect. Manjaro 18 had about 32 wallpapers, I believe . MX 18 has 26 but the 12 mx17 wallpapers were retained on the iso (kind of inadvertently).
The use case for standard manjaro release and mx is fairly similar, but manjaro is also a arch based rolling distro so they do also target the more techy minimalist type user with architect and unstable branch repo, etc. That is not mx's target group at all.
If you are the "everything I don't need is bloat, even if other people find it useful" type of user, fair enough, you'll probably find both distros' normal isos bloated.
Also, neither mx nor manjaro give me any issues. I did install mx18 RC on real metal to test it out. No issues.
It might be good therefore to see the repos you have enabled, your hardware, and have an idea of what you removed, just in case you removed something key. With more info, the reasons behind your issues might reveal themselves.
About theming: I've never found Manjaro's default panel icons (esp power manager! ) nice either. But it runs well for me (most important) and I don't have a problem changing icon sets. Ultimately aesthetics is subjective.
Anyway, welcome.

Also, what are the 4 package managers?
Only 2 graphical ones, right?
Synaptic is the venerable old gui package manager of Debian based distros. MX packageinstaller (mxpi) is mx's and does more than synaptic, including its Popular apps functionality and the ability to manage Flatpaks in a graphical interface. Unlike KDE's Discover and Gnome's Software, Xfce does not have a graphical package manager nor one that handles Flatpaks.
Mxpi doesn't just do what synaptic does.

Which package manager did you use?
If synaptic, did you reload package lists first? Unlike pacman, you have to do this in Debian.
5 packages being held back: are you trying to install via terminal, using apt upgrade command rather than apt full-upgrade? Or did you change settings in synaptic or mxpi to not use full-upgrade option?

Only quoting this bit, but replying to both posts.
What I can find are Synaptic, of course, but then two graphical that looks identical when opened but have different icons and different names: The MX one, and one with a red Debian logo on it and called something else. Installed as a separate packagebut looks absolutely identical as the MX one when opened.
And then the text based one, yes. Four in total.
As for bloated: I don't mind wallpapers, I am a wallpaperoholic myself.
"Apps i don't need = Bloatware"? Mayyybe to a point; I mean I always mutter under my breath when I have to uninstall Office Online, Skype and whatnot in Manjaro. But there were a few things which I guess is about covering all your bases for an user? Like a Dialup. I haven't used a dial up modem since 2003, I think. But I guess that somewhere in the world you still have to. What else were there... Maybe it was more an issue of covering all you bases between techie, office person and home user and have preinstalled software for all of them.
Manjaro Stable is as Stable as it can get, I love it. But I am at the point where after spending months playing around I got stuck in a rut, so basically I needed a fix on the wild side; hence switching Manjaro to Unstable and going to install SIduction tomorrow. (ANd of course at first boot after updates Manjaro XFCE couldn't log in using the graphical interface. Systemd had frakked up. Oh well, be careful what you wish for

)
Anyway I DO find a lot of things I like with this, I just have to get used to using the command prompts for Debian again; that's part of why I do this, to remember old knowledge.
Edit:
I tried Synaptic first. And then the MX one. It was Synaptic that when klicking the check button listed Firefox and four other packages as being held back; I did not try to force the issue, I just noticed that when I did the auto detected updates they suddenly were eligible to be upgraded.

@beardedgeek72 and @asqwerth as a user of manjaro since version 0.81 (I think it was) I have decided to seriously move to the use of MX & Debian. For me, there are things here that go 'far' beyond bloatware and software acquisition tools. I'll quickly offer my personal perspective:
- Debian like arch is easy enough to script. I remove lots of software I don't care for or use, and replace it with software I do use and like. The scripts take about 1 minute to run and are only required at install. No big deal, to me.
- the MX Tools, in my experience and opinion, there is nothing to match them. There are a few distros that make similar attempts but, for me, they fall short.

- stability and currency of the MX environment; I managed 5 users' machine environments with a current total of 7 machines, my users are ages nearly 90 down to 5 1/2. The way the team here patches, fixes, tests, and rolls out product is amazing. My users are much happier then they were with manjaro stable, Linuxmint, ubuntu .... obviously grandson (5 1/2) did not test all of those; he's only seen 1 change.
- MX is not bleeding edge, and for me the quintessential really "old geek", that is sad philosophically speaking. But speaking practically, MX is rugged, well-built, reliable, and backed by an amazing community. Plus I have to say the auto-pilot update/ upgrade feature is grand.

- oh and no reliance on systemd here... I love that.

In the end it is all about trade-offs. There is no perfect world. But for me, I'm here for what I hope is a long time. Sorry folks.... :lipsrsealed:

Going a bit meta, but I see this thread have been going for 13 pages and we hit against the law of diminishing returns (hard to follow different discussion). I wonder if if a couple of days we shouldn't lock the thread and direct people to submit bug reports for things that don't work, and submit suggestions for improvements either as a "feature request" in the Bugzilla or as a separate thread for each such request. Just an idea... (on the other hand if people are having fun with this we should let it continue)

Everyone who wants a 'perfect world' must build own systems. Choose a base. Maybe Arch or a Debian net-install without a DE and start.
Another way is for example OpenSUSE. The installer give users the choice to select the software packages. These images are install media only, no live system. Live Systems are full featured systems by the creators and the install process copies the whole system to HDD/SSD.
The Ubuntu installer ubiquity is able to remove packages after the process. (filesystem.manifest-remove). But the packages here where select by the developers. Here you can simply edit this file. It's outside the squashfs, you only must extract the iso and rebuild after editing with xorriso or genisoimage.

I agree. While interesting and feedback, discussing the philosophy of MX, I think, was not what was intended by this thread. Nothing wrong with that but best done in a separate thread.

I think that's the right direction to go, though I would say we need to leave this thread open for a while still. Now that our Bugzilla is up and running, we do want to direct people to it.

My intention when starting this thread was it would be a place for reporting the installation of MX18 and any installation problems. Spread into other related topics was not intended but is probably inevitable. My own experience with Bugzilla is that some users may prefer to report via this forum as it is easier.

Maybe we should set up a Wiki article on "How to report a bug on the MX Bug Manager." I'll look into that.

Yup, only 2 gui front-end programs (synaptic and mxpi) that essentially use the apt terminal commands.
The one with the red Debian glyph is actually a program (gdebi) to directly install .deb binary executable files, like double clicking on a .Exe file in Windows.
And visually the gdebi interface does not look like mxpi at all.
By the way I posted a 3rd post, to ask if you had manually refreshed package lists in synaptic. You might have opened synaptic before the behind the scenes auto updater had finished checking for updates or some repo mirrors were not yet synced.

Some may remember my wireless issues on my Lenovo Yoga 730 with MX-18 rc1 from last week. Well, that’s all in the rear view mirror now. Downloaded MX-18 Final and installed it the way I used to with Ubuntu back in the days of all the Broadcom wireless issues and everything worked perfectly. The trick? ALWAYS install with an Ethernet network connection. Just always seems to work better. It must be downloading wireless components while installing.
MX-18 works great now!

Minor problem with FF64 in MX18 not found in MX17.1 fully upgraded.
My MX18 FF64 does not display some html input boxes properly.
My MX18 Chromium doesn't have this same problem, but I'd rather be using FF64.
Only problem I've noticed so far with MX18.
Unlike MX17.1, MX18 FF64 Help says FF updates disabled by sys admin.

We just now added a json file to our Firefox install that disabled the update nag and the message that an attempted upgrade failed, so we won't see those any more, thanks to fehlix. It does mean that we now will see that message about updates being disabled. It's not MX 18 specific.

Just installed MX 18. Man this thing is lightning in a bottle! 8 gb ram, dual core Sandybridge, Sandisk SSD--MX flies on this thing. Love it! Thanks again folks!

You're a user that I'd like to test to see how Intel hardware decoding va-api acceleration is working in VLC 3.0.5 from the test repo, too. I'll start a thread about setting that up and testing that.

Let me know what you need.

Not to whine, but I am not fond of the "quiet" boot up setting, or the default grub boot settings that hide the boot logging information from plain view. That's a move to being too much like MS Windows. Let me see the boot logging information by default. For those who disagree, it's good medicine.

Esc key toggles view, and splash can be disabled in MX Boot Options

Jerry3904, how would an ordinary user know that? Anyway, if it wasn't for the default "quiet" default boot on the ISO, I wouldn't have anything to complain about. :-) I've been a die hard (still am) Gentoo user for 15 years and MX is rocking my boat. (That's a high compliment.)

You might want to take a look at our sister distro antiX. It's more cli oriented. It's got the console decoration that I think may have originated in Gentoo. AntiX is still Debian based but it's been influenced by Gentoo. If you want a fast booting rescue live-usb that is easy to customize then check it out. On fast hardware it can get to the Bash console in less than 5 seconds. Use the "fdb+" option. It can do a frugal install and boot to the installed system in less than 30 seconds, again given fast hardware. TBH I do most of my MX/antiX development work on Gentoo.

To work in CLI (Console mode) only not necessary to use whatever option or type whatever, you can use <CTRL> <ALT> <F1> through <CTRL> <ALT> <F6> and login into the console ... <CTRL> <ALT> <F7> to return go Graphical Environment ;-)

Bitjam means there are lots of cli-based tools and apps in antiX
