A couple of fairly trivial things I have found:
You can right-click the Whisker menu and select Properties in order to configure it. One of the options on the Behaviour tab is to have an icon for 'All Settings; this launches Settings Manager. (This is off by default, but might be worth having on and removing the panel link for Settings Manager?).
Checking the tick-box to enable this results in the icon launching 'App-finder'. It should point to xfce4-settings-manager. (It's easy to change it in the properties dialogue.)
I'm sure this worked correctly in B1.
Also, if Firefox is installed, when clicking an image file in Thunar Firefox launches instead of Mirage. Again, it's easy to change, but confusing for a beginner.

Installing Samba via metapackage-installer...solves the problem...but still needs to be fixed in the default install, obviously.
I'm a bit mystified by this. I can browse network shares (NTFS) from Thunar with no problem. I have just checked it running live and then immediately after a fresh install. Navigating from 'Browse Network' to the shared folder (partition in this case) adds a Network entry 'smb://Annesroom/Winfiles' which I can then use directly. I have to repeat the navigation on subsequent boots.
Am I the only one for whom this is working?[/quote]
I do not know the secret sauce to get samba shares working on the MX side. Installed samba, and get an errror in Thunar when accessing the network, How does one share a folder. Do you have to mess with the samba.cfg file?

I don't know if this is the intended behavior, but . . .
Using "Printers (CUPS)" from the menu on a live USB stick and in virtualbox, I get "Server refused the connection."
In a VM install adding my printer was easy. (Samsung ML-1640)

That's what a FF install does on any OS, I think, and it's very annoying.

The quote is a bit garbled, Rich - only the last bit is mine. I've not managed to succesfully share a folder from Mepis or MX yet - I don't know the sambas secret either. This is not a priority for me, although I want to get it working one day. My main requirement is to be able to pull files from the real WinXP machine to my main desktop, and that works fine - I simply browse the shared partition over the network.

Thanks Gaer Boy. I am trying to share between a KDE install on a laptop and MX-14 on a desktop. It is fairly automatic KDE to KDE, but I suspect that one has to modify configuration files in MX-14. Beyond me at this point, so I will put it aside for the more important MX-14 evaluations. I do not want to muddy the waters.

Browsers are a fast loading image viewer (*jpg, *.bmp *.png, *gif of course, or just *.txt, not sure what else). I sometimes drag pics to a FF icon for this, but I digress....still using the previous *.iso and still just reading and trying to comprehend some of the discussion, although it often feels like I'm overhearing a group of wizards discussing magic.

I just tried this on a fresh install of Zorin-OS-8, chosen because it doesn't have Firefox installed as standard, and the disc happened to be at the top of the pile. I had been playing with it before B2 was up, and couldn't remember this happening.
I checked jpg and png files opened in the default viewer. (EOG). I then installed Firefox, rebooted, and the image files still opened in EOG, so it's possible to achieve the desired behaviour somehow.
Of course, it's the 'somehow' that's the problem

wow, brilliant!
burned to a dvd -r for an ancient p4 laptop which then took almost the entire 20 minutes for setup (i forgot) worked well though. i thought the clock was off but needed to run ceni again. also forgot about the
ESS Maestro thing but all is well now

.
used custom install to include a swap partition :) enjoyed the meta-installer right away to swoop on opera. beautiful, fast and seems to run noticeably cooler than the antiX kde that it replaced.

easy... and thanks

inxi.txt
kinda knew it was going to be great by looking at the sources

definitely on the right track.
meme?
