Always been the case for me in any xfce distro, as the program goes through and collates all the available icons into the various categories.
Thank you for pointing it out. Out of curiosity I just tried the same thing on Mint XFCE 20.1, Debian 10.9 XFCE, Xubuntu 20.04 and it is relatively instantaneous.
Though mx21 beta2 is using Xfce 4.16, which is newer than the others. I wonder if it is just an issue with Xfce 4.16.
@asqwerth thanks for the explanation!

I wanted to see if there was any difference in times between MX-21, MX-19 and MX-18 when changing a Desktop icon using the "Edit Launcher" or "Properties" window.

All three releases are using the same Ryzen 5 (AF) 1600 CPU (6C/12T, base clock of 3.2 GHz, boost 3.6GHz). I didn't care about the icon loading delay as much as what the differences are between the three releases (the delay has a lot to do with the computer speed too).

All of my times are based on the same CPU and motherboard (with 16GB RAM). Each MX Linux release is on its own SSD (Crucial MX-500). MX-18 and 19 are using Full Disk Encryption, MX-21 is not (so that alone should give MX-21 a tiny advantage).

What I found was that it's getting worse as the releases progress. Okay okay, a tiny bit worse, but it's certainly not getting better.

I tested each release with a stopwatch, beginning from when I clicked on the icon in "Edit Launcher" and ending when the window to select icons appeared. I checked 12 different icons on each release and averaged the time. Every test was easily within 200ms of the other 11. These are the results:
  • MX-21 = 11.2 seconds
  • MX-19 = 9.3 seconds
  • MX-18 = 6.2 seconds
On each release I used the ManyRoads/cpufile Conky that displays the CPU activity percentage for each of the 12 threads. It is interesting to note that after I clicked the icon to change, CPU activity in MX-21 was usually 30-60% with an occasional jump to ~75% toward the end (depended on which package I was testing). In MX-19 CPU activity quickly jumps to 75-90% and for the most part stays there, never going to more than 95%. CPU activity In MX-18 quickly jumps up to 90-95% and then quickly goes to 100% and stays there until the icon selection window appears. All tests showed that only one thread was used during the change.

And yes, I have a lot of free time (retired).

@Stuart_M
There are a few variables:
How many icon packs installed or maybe it only searches current icon pack with or without "Inherits".
Whether the icon packs have a cache file or not (otherwise warnings will show in Settings Manager > Appearance > Icons tab

I guess it's an Xfce utility that does this, maybe exo something. It can be useful, but also annoying. I think MATE only opens an Open Dialog. It's instant, but you have to browse the file system yourself.

There are a few niggles in Xfce like Preferred Applications. MATE automatically adds from installed applications. Xfce requires separate desktop files for this that you have to add manually, but in MX-21 it is actually taken care of by a package full of "Preferred Applications files" for Xfce 4.16.

We all dream of the perfect system, don't we? It's frustrating, but MX-21 looks good. I feel it's the last one with Xfce for me so personally I feel it's nice to see Xfce go out with a bang. Other people may of course enjoy upcoming Xfce 4.18 etc.
:turtle:
Note to self and others: SysVinit is a good option. However if you run into problems try with systemd first. This applies to AppImages, Flatpaks, GitHub packages and even some Debian packages.

I am getting an error after attempting to install signal-desktop per the instructions on the signal website (https://www.signal.org/download/#)
After executing step 2.

Code: Select all

 echo 'deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/signal-desktop-keyring.gpg] https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt xenial main' |\
  sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/signal-xenial.list
The system just hangs. So I closed the window after about 20 minutes.

No when I attempt to do any system update/upgrade I get this back;
E: Conflicting values set for option Signed-By regarding source https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt/ xenial: /usr/share/keyrings/signal-desktop-keyring.gpg !=
E: The list of sources could not be read.
or:

I think you messed up your command. you also have the signal repo defined 6 times in the file, and I think one of them is wrong.

I would delete the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/signal-xenial.list file, run an "apt-get update" after that, and then use mx-packageisntaller->popular apps to install signal-desktop. it will set up the repo and gpg keys for you.

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

I actually just copy/pasted the command. Anyway, now it's working, thank you.

@SwampRabbit
Yes I'm using AHS

Thank you! I will do some further tests in the evening and will read about the meaning of "segfaults" as I found some in the logs.

In keyboard, application shortcuts, Super L is set to popup whiskermenu: xfce4-popup-whiskermenu

Click the entry, click edit, you can change the key there, or remove it altogether by removing that line (click remove).

(note that I AM typing this from 19.4 but I don't think this has changed)

I just checked session and startup application and find out that

Code: Select all

xfce-superkey
was being autostarted.
P.s. I know you have that super+L entry in your keyboard shortcuts dialogue box. The thing is I don't have any of such entry in beta 2. That's the reason i asked in here. However I found the reason for that as mentioned above. Thanks for your response in either case.
