MX Service Manager : keep asking root password and exit [Solved]

Posted: Sun Aug 17, 2025 8:32 am
by specialk
Hi,

Just noticed that when launching MX Service Manager tool, it asks me the admin password (ok), but once the app is opened and by just moving the mouse, I get a dialog box saying that the app needs admin privileges, need to restart the app. I click ok and it closes. So basically, I cannot do anything.
Seems like I have log entries in syslog when this happens.
I thought it was an issue with kernel 6.12, but same with 6.9

(it's been a while since I ran service manager for the last time, but never had this issue)

Thanks for any help.

I can't duplicate that behaviour on any of my machines. Can you try it with another mouse?

Does that imply that you had to close Service Manager first in order to reopen it?

It's not just the mouse, I mean, any interaction while in the app leads to the dialog box "This app needs admin privileges, close and open again" (while I was first asked for the passwd). Using, the arrows, etc
I tried with other MX Tools requiring a password at opening, no problem.
Here's what is related to this in my syslog :

What version are you all using?

There was an update yesterday I think and a couple of days before that too. I think Adrian added the sudo password functionality because it wasn't showing the info correctly. I have version 25.8 (About) and it's working fine

EDIT: I am using sysv instead of systemd

I can replicate this also. If I re-open the program, it eventually asks for the password again even if I just move the mouse around the screen.
Does that imply that you had to close Service Manager first in order to reopen it?
No. When you launch the program, it initially asks for the password and it then opens.
While idling, a prompt shows up stating administrator privileges are required and selecting OK closes the program.

I don't get that at all. But here are the differences. I'm using the Liquorix 6.9.xxx kernel, XFCE and the Greybird theme. You are using a Xanmod kernel with Fluxbox plus SystemD and @specialk is using KDE with the same Liquorix 6.9.xxx kernel plus SystemD. For reference here is my QSI:

As a test I tried rebooting with SystemD but it had no effect.

Here's what in the syslog for MX Service Manager (problem) and MX Boot options (no problem).
Both require admin password when launching the app.

I can't replicate it while booted to sys-V. I launch the program, it asks for password (as usual) and
I let it idle for 3 minutes while moving the mouse around and I never got the popup prompt that I posted in comment #7.

The DEBUG output (from console and in syslog) seems "weird".

Code: Select all

DEBUG: Exit code 0 does not match expected elevation error codes
systemctl list-units --type=service --all -o json
edit : I confirm that booting on SysVinit does NOT have the issue. Meanwhile ...

Please post code like this
code output here
for better readability.

Or you can select the code and tick the </> button (it's next to the quote)

Thanks.

The "DEBUG: Exit code ... does not match..." should be harmless, but I will remove it because it might be confusing, I don't understand the issue and can't replicate it. The code is actually pretty simple:

Code: Select all

if (asRoot && getuid() != 0) {
        if (exitCode() == EXIT_CODE_PERMISSION_DENIED || exitCode() == EXIT_CODE_COMMAND_NOT_FOUND) {
            handleElevationError();
        } else {
            qDebug() << "DEBUG: Exit code" << exitCode() << "does not match expected elevation error codes";
        }
    }
That dialog box saying that the app needs admin privileges is triggered by "handleElevatationError()" that is executed only in case the exitCode() == either EXIT_CODE_PERMISSION_DENIED or EXIT_CODE_COMMAND_NOT_FOUND

I guess the program is trying to run a command that either is not found or exits with a code that is the same as "Command not found" -- not sure why is doing that, it doesn't do it for me, I tried both sysvinit and systemd (which I see a number of people who have problems have in QSI)

Can you guys who are having issue run this checks:

type systemctl
file /sbin/service
file /sbin/update-rc.d

I don't think I try to run any other command as root.

It can ask for a second prompt if you wait long enough so the cached authentication expires, but then you just need to enter the root password and if you don't enter it it should close -- which is normal behavior.

Thanks,
Adrian

OK, I think I figured it out, you guys don't have the "awk" or "jq" command, I will add those as dependencies.

Thanks @Adrian
25.08.04 solved the issue on my end. I'll let others report back if the update worked for them.

Thanks @Adrian for the quick response and update.
Just installed it, seems to work fine now.

Thanks for confirming, actually I release a .05 which doesn't need those dependencies, I was using them for convenience mostly because jq is very small and also because awk is on most of the systems but why use them if there's no need.

I am also thinking to remove that tooltip when hovering over the items, it's not terrible useful and sometime the writing gets mangled. Any opinions?

@Adrian .05 is broken. Program won't launch at all now.
.04 worked.

mx-service-manager updated today and is broken on my system.
I haven't used it in 2 or3 days and did not have the popup warning before.

Today after the update I get the popup that says:
Administrator Access Required
This operation requires administrator privileges. Please restart the application and enter your password when prompted.

Clicking ok then restarting and same thing happens.
Rebooting didn't fix it.
I apt-purged mx-service-manager and it took mx-apps with it.
Rebooted and installed mx-apps and mx-service-manager and still get the popup.
