why does my volume icon disappear and i lose sound so often? i can watch a video online or play a file directly from computer and next thing i know i have no icon or sound when trying to play another online video or file from computer.

First thing I would try is using MXPI to install a Liquorix kernel.These kernels have been shown to solve audio problems that can crop up in the default Debian kernels. Given the age of your machine, the 6.6.12-1 version would be a good start.

If this proves to be no cure, you should start looking for a loose connection either in the output jack or in the cable and jack going to the external speakers or headphones.

ok, installed that kernel. have a question about it though. is that kernel still supported and updated?

will update this topic after seeing if still having volume issue. never did when windows 10 was installed though or for the short time i had linux mint on it.

It can be updated if you install the liquorix 64 bit (ahs updates package), however I have found that there can be vast differences in functionality (and not always beneficial) when a liquorix kernel updates. I've been using that specific kernel on my HP 15 for about two years now without issue.
Remember that just because a device works flawlessly in Windows is no guarantee that it will work as well or at all in Linux.

It can be updated if you install the liquorix 64 bit (ahs updates package), however I have found that there can be vast differences in functionality (and not always beneficial) when a liquorix kernel updates. I've been using that specific kernel on my HP 15 for about two years now without issue.
Remember that just because a device works flawlessly in Windows is no guarantee that it will work as well or at all in Linux.

just so i'm clear on this, if i were to install the liquorix ahs package, would that just update the 6.6.12-1 kernel specifically. or would it upgrade it to a totally new kernel like 6.7 or higher?

The AHS Update package will bring in the latest Liquorix kernel which would be 6.12.17-1

You CAN specify which liquorix kernel you want to run, including version! You do NOT have to run the latest (ie 6.15.x version) If you go to the enabled tab and search for Liquorix you will find just about every 'last version' of each kernel, and 6.12 still has ALL of the minor versions as well. )

I run liquorix, but using the Enabled Repos tab I *pin* my version to a specific one until I have tested the next version I am going to run.

Make a Timeshift snapshot before you enable the AHS repo if you want to be able to go back to as it was.

I do that the easy way of:

- Run mx package installer
- Search for liquorix
- Change to the Enabled repos tab
- Select TWO things for the liquorix kernel you want:
-- Image
-- Headers
- I always check the "Also Install 'Recommended Packages" as well
- Click install.

This method installs a specific version and you dont get auto updated!

Example: if you wanted the 6.12.10 version for amd64 (, then you should check:
linux-headers-6.12.10-1-liquorix-amd64
linux-image-6.12.10-1-liquorix-amd64

Once installed and you reboot, your QSI should show your running this kernel. If not, and it installed properly, then goto MX Boot options and specifically choose it, then reboot.

Where this varies: If you chose Liquorix 6.12 from the Popular Applications kernels section, then that is a Meta package, which means each new minor version you get auto updated - until there are no more minor versions.

ie so i fyou installed at the popular applications - kernels tab.. then the current 6.12 liquorix version would have kept updating you until 6.12.17 which I believe is the most current 6.12 kernel .
