annoying repeat of "cant open app GEANY IDE"

I had this problem once before.
The problem:
when I click the icon on the FluxBox dock, the app window does not open, instead icon drops down to the taskbar at the bottom of the screen and when I click the app icon on the task bar, it terminates the app...effectively rendering the app useless

To solve it previously, I renamed the .config file and started GEANY in a terminal. Now that prior solution no longer works

Any ideas on solving this problem by other than re-installing GEANY ???

PS I replaced the geany.conf file with a .conf file from another computer where GEANY is working OK... but it still does not fix the problem

From here:

and here:

Your Lite On SSD is twelve years old and likely needs to be replaced.

to quote myself from the last time
Melber wrote: Fri Jan 31, 2025 3:34 pm Is it maybe on another workspace?
press ctrl+alt or roll mouse wheel to cycle through workspaces.

or try ctrl+0 to maximize the window
Can you confirm neither of these helps?

What settings are listed in the ~/.fluxbox/apps under [app] (class=Geany) ?

I experienced such odd behavior one or two times before. Found by chance that the offending window had moved in vertical direction to another workspace...
Each time I could find the window-titlebar behind the toolbar. Simply hiding the running tint2 panel gave access to moving the window back again.
Not sure if that is the case with you, but hey: check it out.

In any way, I've always disabled this strange vertical-workspace warping behavior, by editing its setting in ~/.fluxbox/init to false :

Code: Select all

session.screen0.workspacewarpingvertical:	false

"When starting geany from a terminal does it show any error message ?" ... NO

" Is it maybe on another workspace? press ctrl+alt or roll mouse wheel to cycle through workspaces. or try ctrl+0 to maximize the window

" What settings are listed in the ~/.fluxbox/apps under [app] (class=Geany) ? "
app] (class=Geany)
[Position] (UPPERLEFT) {31% 100%}
[Close] {yes}

"session.screen0.workspacewarpingvertical: false " ... FALSE ismy current setting

and if you edit it to

unable to edit...becase my usual editor GEANY is non-functional,so I'm forced to edit using NANO and I cant understand which NANO key combination corresponds to M-D

Maybe your geany settings are messed up. You could try removing the geany folder from .config and open it again.

" and if you edit it to [Position] (UPPERLEFT) {31% 30%} " ... YEH YOU SOLVED IT.... AFTER I finally figured out how to save an edited file in NANO ....NANO has no menu item FILE>SAVE ...to save edited files NANO requires ctrl-O followed by M-D (which cryptically refers to Alt-D )

The bigger issue is how did this .fluxbox/apps file get screwed up... GEANY has been working fine for a very long time prior to this afternoon and I've never edited this /apps file

With nano it's Ctrl +O to save the file then Ctrl +X to quit nano.
The bigger issue is how did this .fluxbox/apps file get screwed up
Not sure what you did but you can always remove the entry from the apps file and launch geany again. fluxbox will create a new entry.

nano literally prints a menu on the screen for reference while editing a file. This makes it a popular choice of editor for beginners because the learning curve is "look at the screen and read the available keybindings".

MX Fluxbox comes with two "normal" editors pre-installed: geany and featherpad . There's no need to ever open nano if you don't want to.

Something or someone is pushing the window off the screen.
Do you use key-binding shortcuts for window tiling? Have you edited the ~/.fluxbox/keys file?
I ask because if I edit the apps file to your {31% 100%} and send geany off into the netherworld, I can get the window back on screen using the default ctrl+0, ctrl+1, ctrl+2... keybindings. You say this doesn't work for you.

" Something or someone is pushing the window off the screen. Do you use key-binding shortcuts for window tiling? "....NO
" Have you edited the ~/.fluxbox/keys file? "
....NO but I suspect it may be due to GEANY default settings : main menu> EDIT > PREFERENCES under GENERAL, STARTUP, SHUTDOWN
